Do you know how to dial 911?
A CUT OR A SCRAPE
NOSE BLEEDS Sit or stand upright to slow the flow of blood. Do not tip your head back. Pinch your nose with your thumb and forefinger for 10 minutes without relieving pressure. Don t forget to breathe through your mouth while doing this. If bleeding continues despite these efforts, call your doctor or dial 911
BURNS Apply cold running water or a cold pack immediately. Apply cold pack until the pain is relieved, or for one hour. Reapply the cold pack if pain returns after the area has rewarmed. MAKE SURE THE BURNED AREA DOES NOT TURN NUMB OR YOU COULD CAUSE FROSTBITE
BLACK EYE Apply cold compresses 5-10 minutes on, minutes off. Be sure and wrap ice in a towel to protect the delicate skin on the eyelid. Use a cold compress for 24 to 48 hours, then you can switch to warm 5 to 10 minutes on, 10 to 15 minutes off. This helps the body reabsorb the leakage of blood and may help reduce discoloration. Prop the childs head up with an extra pillow at night. Encourage him/her to sleep on opposite side of injury as pressure will increase swelling. Call your doctor if the following symptoms occur: * increased redness * drainage from the eye * persistent eye pain * any changes in vision * any visible abnormality of the eyeball * visible bleeding on the white part (sclera) of the eye, especially near the cornea.
Poisoning Read instructions on label specifying what to do if a poisoning occurs. If the person is alert, give him/her a glass of water or milk to drink. The liquid will slow the rate at which the poison is absorbed by the body. If the person is weak, lethargic, unconscious, or having seizures, do not give him/her anything by mouth Certain poisons should be vomited; others should not. If you do not know the identity of the substance swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Overall, you should not induce vomiting unless directed to by a poison control authority or your doctor If you are told to induce vomiting in the person who has swallowed poison, use syrup of ipecac to do so. An alternative method to induce vomiting is touching the back of the throat of the person to initiate gagging If the poison has spilled on the person s clothing, skin, or eyes, remove the clothing and flush the skin or eyes with cool or lukewarm water for 20 minutes Get immediate medical attention. Take the container with you if you have not identified the poison
