Flush eyes with clean water and seek immediate medical attention. For direct contact, immediately hold eyelids apart and flush the affected eye(s) with clean water for at least 30 minutes. It is recommended that flushing will continue until an ophthalmologist or emergency room physician examines the patient. Immediately flush affected area(s) with large amounts of water for at least 20 minutes while removing contaminated shoes, clothing, and constrictive jewelry. If skin surface is damaged, apply a clean dressing and seek immediate medical attention. If skin surface is not damaged, cleanse the affected area(s) thoroughly by washing with mild soap and water, seek medical attention. If irritation or redness develops, seek immediate medical attention.

3 NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: SECTION V Flammable Properties: Extinguishing Media: Protection of Firefighters: Prompt medical attention is mandatory in all cases of over exposure. Rescue personnel should be equipped with positive pressure selfcontained breathing apparatus. Conscious persons should be assisted to an uncontaminated area and inhale fresh air. Unconscious persons should be moved to an uncontaminated area, and given assisted (artificial) respiration. If breathing is difficult and medical oxygen and appropriately Inhaled: trained personnel are available, administer 100% oxygen to affected person. Do not use mouth to mouth if ingested or inhaled. Keep victim warm and quiet. Monitor breathing and pulse continuously. Assure that mucous or vomited material does not obstruct the airway by positional drainage. Delayed pulmonary edema may occur. Keep patient under medical observation for at least 24 hours. This material is a gas under normal atmospheric conditions and ingestion is unlikely. If ingested Ingestion: give large amounts of water and seek medical attention Delayed pulmonary edema may occur following inhalation. Keep patient under observation for at least 24 hours. Do not direct water streams directly on liquid ammonia pool. Carbon dioxide can displace oxygen. Use caution when applying carbon dioxide in confined spaces. Protect storm drains or bodies of water from receiving run off. Gas flow should be stopped. Positive pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus is required for all fire fighting activities involving hazardous materials. Full structural fire fighting (bunker) gear is the minimum acceptable attire. The need for proximity, entry, flashover and/or special chemical protective clothing needs to be determined for each incident by a competent fire fighting safety professional. Water used for fire suppression and cooling may become contaminated. Discharge to sewer system(s) or the environment may be restricted, requiring containment and proper disposal of water. If tank, railcar, or tank truck is involved in a fire, isolate for 1 mile (1600 m) in all directions. Consider initial evacuation for 1 mile (1600 m) in all directions. Stop spill/release if it can be done with minimal risk. If this cannot be done, allow fire to burn. Move undamaged containers from immediate hazard area if it can be done with minimal risk. Stay away from ends of container. Water spray may be useful in minimizing or dispersing vapors. Cool equipment exposed to fire with water, if it can be done with minimal risk.

4 SECTION VI RESPONSE TECHNIQUES: SECTION VII HANDLING: STORAGE: SECTION VIII ENGINEERING CONTROLS: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Evacuate all personnel from affected area. Notify persons downwind of release, to shelter in place or evacuate. Keep area isolated until gas has dispersed Keep all unprotected persons away from spill area For a small spill, isolate immediate hazard area at least 30 meters or 100 feet in all directions and keep unauthorized personnel out. For a large spill, isolate immediate hazard area at least 60 meters or 200 feet in all directions and keep unauthorized personnel out. Stay upwind and away from spill / release. Avoid skin contact and do not inhale gas. Wear appropriate protective equipment. If ammonia liquid has been released onto the ground, the pool should be diked as soon as possible or diverted into a holding area. This will help to stabilize the ammonia liquid pool. Water fog nozzles can then be set up downwind to absorb the ammonia vapor drift as outlined above. Do not direct water streams directly on liquid ammonia pool as this will cause rapid and vigorous boiling and vaporization of cold pool. Prevent spilled material from entering sewers, storm drains, bodies of water, other unauthorized confined treatment drainage systems. Dike far ahead of spill for later recovery or disposal. May ignite. Eliminate all sources of ignition away from release. The use of explosion-proof equipment is recommended. Notify appropriate federal, state, and local agencies as may be required HANDLING AND STORAGE Contents under pressure. The use of explosion-proof equipment is recommended and may be required (see appropriate fire local codes). Do not enter confined spaces such as tanks or pits without following proper entry procedures such as 29 CFR The use of appropriate respiratory protection is advised when concentrations exceed any established exposure limits. Use good personal hygiene practice. Anhydrous ammonia is a product that must be handled only by trained personnel in approved equipment systems. Copper, copper bearing alloys such as brass, and bronze and galvanized steel are not suitable for handling ammonia. Preferably store outside. Otherwise in a cool, well-ventilated, non-combustible location, away from all possible sources of ignition and contamination. Protect containers from excessive heat (greater than 120 o F). Use only approved pressure vessels with appropriate safety devices. Never fill pressure storage tanks over 85% of vessel volume. Do not contact liquid ammonia pools or leaks from containers with direct streams of water. Use iron or steel tanks, piping and valves specially designed for ammonia service. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION Use in a totally enclosed system. If current ventilation practices are not adequate to maintain airborne concentrations below the established exposure limits (see below), additional ventilation or exhaust systems may be required. Emergency flushing facilities, such as safety eyewashes and showers should be provided in the immediate work area.

5 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): GENERAL HYGIENE CONSIDERATIONS: Eye/Face: Skin: Respiratory: Other: No additional considerations Wear safety glasses, goggles or full face shield while handling sealed cylinders. Wear a face mask that provides both splash and impact protection for face and eyes when using respiratory protection described below. Follow NIOSH recommendations for appropriate gloves that prevent skin contact to anhydrous ammonia. Depending on conditions of use, an apron and/or arm covers may be necessary. Level A PPE must be worn for any response actions to a spill/cloud For Emergency Escape - NIOSH approved escape packs or NIOSH approved air purifying cartridge with canisters are also acceptable. Where Airborne Concentrations Are Expected To Exceed Exposure Limits - Use an appropriate NIOSH approved air-purifying respirator with an ammonia cartridge or positive pressure air supply. Where Exposure Are Not Known - Use a positive pressure air-supplied respirator if there is potential for an uncontrolled release, exposure levels are not known, or any other circumstances where air purifying respirators may not provide adequate protection. A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA s 29 CFR and ANSI Z88.2 requirements must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator s use. A source of clean water should be available in the work area for flushing eyes and skin. Appropriate chemical protective clothing, constructed of butyl rubber, natural rubber, nitrile rubber or polyvinyl chloride (not Viton ), should be worn as needed. Gas may ignite at vapor concentrations between 15% and 28% in air. Avoid all possible sources of ignition (see Sections 5 and 7). Heat will increase pressure in the storage tank.
