1 Exercise 7-2: Perform the Control Bleeding, Prevent or Control Shock, and Treat Burns Task Directions: 1. Print out this exercise. 2. Find two fellow recruits, either through the buddies available online or through your recruiter. 3. Use the checklist to practice on each other. Ultimately, your recruiter will use this same information to assess your performance. a. Introduce different conditions for each step. b. Give each other feedback on the performance of each step. Ask your recruiter to clarify any step you're unsure about. c. Practice until you feel you've mastered the task. 4. Report to your recruiter when you're ready to have him check your performance. 2 Observer's Checklist Performance Measures NO 1. Uncovers the wound unless clothing is stuck to the wound or a chemical environment exists. 2. Applies the casualty's field dressing, white side down, directly over the wound, and wraps the tails around the injury. 3. Ties the tails securely into a non-slip knot, over the outer edge of the dressing. 4. Checks to make sure that knot is tied firmly enough to prevent slipping, but not tight enough to stop the normal circulation to the hand or foot (act as a tourniquet). Pressure Dressing 1. Places a wad of material over the wound. 2. Places an improvised dressing over the wad of padding and wraps it tightly around the limb. 3. Ties a non-slip knot directly over the wound. 4. Checks to make sure that the dressing is tight enough but does not act as a tourniquet. Exercise 7-2 Page 2 of 6

3 CAUTION: Remember only to simulate the tightening of a tourniquet if you use a live casualty for this task. If you want to practice tightening, use a manikin or other substitute. Observer's Checklist Performance Measures NO Put on a Tourniquet Describe the condition for applying a tourniquet. 1. Make a band at least 2 inches wide. 2. Place the tourniquet around the limb 2 to 4 inches above the wound but not on a joint. If possible, places tourniquet over smooth clothing. 3. Make a half-knot; places a rigid object on top of the half-knot and ties a full knot over the object. 4. Simulate twisting the stick until the tourniquet is tight around the limb and bright red bleeding has stopped. 5. Secure the stick with another piece of cloth so that the stick does not unwind. 6. Mark the casualty's forehead with a T. 7. Seek medical aid. Exercise 7-2 Page 3 of 6

4 Observer's Checklist Performance Measures NO Perform First Aid to Prevent or Control Shock Describe the signs and symptoms of shock. 1. Lay the casualty on his or her back and elevate the casualty's feet higher than his heart. 2. Ensure bleeding is controlled. 3. Loosen restrictive clothing. 4. Protect the casualty from the environment (keep warm). 5. Do not give the casualty anything to eat or drink. 6. Provide reassurance to the casualty by saying he or she is going to be okay. 7. Turn the casualty's head to the side if you have to leave him or her. 8. Send for medical help. Exercise 7-2 Page 4 of 6

5 NOTE: Practice only one type of burn in each run-through of this task. Observer's Checklist Performance Measures NO Treat a Casualty Who Has Been Burned 1. Eliminate the source of the burn. a. Thermal Burns (1) If the casualty's clothing is on fire, cover casualty with a field jacket or other piece of non-synthetic material and roll him or her on the ground to put out the flames. b. Electrical Burns (1) If the casualty is in contact with an electrical source, turns off the electricity. (2) If the electricity cannot be turned off, move/drag the casualty away from the source using any non-conductor type of material (rope, dry wood, clothing). NOTE: Soldier should not touch casualty's body or electrical source. c. Chemical Burns (1) Remove liquid chemicals by flushing with much water or other nonflammable fluid. Exercise 7-2 Page 5 of 6

6 (2) Remove dry chemicals by carefully brushing them off with a clean, dry cloth. If large amounts of water are available, flush the area. (3) Smother burning white phosphorus with water, a wet cloth, or wet mud, and keep the area covered. d. Laser Burns (1) Move the casualty away from the source while avoiding eye contact with the beam source. (2) Put on laser eye protection if available. 2. Take appropriate first aid measures. a. Cut and gently lift away any stuck clothing covering the burned area unless it is stuck to the burn or a chemical environment exists. b. Apply the casualty's field dressing or other clean material. c. Do not cause further injury. Exercise 7-2 Page 6 of 6
