1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 GENERAL This manual provides information on the hazards of cold-water immersion; the function and features of the Mustang Survival Immersion Coverall Quick-Donning Model (also known as the MSD720 Quick-Don). This manual also includes test, maintenance and repair instructions to assist qualified Aviation Life Support Equipment Technicians Read this manual thoroughly to become familiar with the operation of the zippers, cinch straps, seals, hood, and mitts. The lives of aircrew may depend on the condition of the MSD720 Quick-Don. Keep the manual in a convenient location for easy reference in the event that the suit requires inspection, repair or cleaning This manual consists of seven sections, each organised into a number of subsections (see the Table of Contents). 1.2 CONTACT For further information concerning this manual or the suit, contact: Government Technical Support Department Mustang Survival Corp Jacombs Road Richmond, BC V6V 1Y6 Tel. Operation of the suit b. Purpose, use and operation of all accessories c. Importance and method of inspections The Aviation Life Support Equipment shop is responsible for: 1 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

1.4 DESCRIPTION Purpose a. Inspection upon first issue from the supply depot or contractor b. Periodic inspection and testing of the suit (see section 4.4) c. Maintenance, cleaning and repair when required d. Requisitioning and maintaining stocks of spare parts e. Maintenance of inspection records for all Mustang MSD720 Quick-Don units The Mustang MSD720 Quick-Don is a blend of ergonomic design and emergency hazards protection. The suit, specifically engineered for emergency use in long-range maritime patrol and transport aircraft, also performs well as a helicopter passenger suit Design The Quick-Don is constructed from inherently buoyant, waterproof material, which is resistant to petroleum and hydrostatic compression. It also provides excellent fire and flame protection, as well as thermal insulating performance against extreme heat or cold The suit very effectively protects the user in the event of cold-water immersion. The watertight design is facilitated by the fitting of high stretch, soft latex rubber seals at the neck and wrists Insulated, three finger thermal protective gloves are provided in readily accessible storage pockets on the sleeves. The glove design provides good coordination for handling survival equipment, personal gear, and boarding of rescue boats and liferafts. Don the insulated thermal protective hood, stored in the thigh pocket, to minimize heat loss through the head Storage The suit is conveniently stored, easily and quickly donned and is stowed for provision to aircraft passengers, when required, for over-water flights. See section 5.0 of this document for folding and packing information Fit The Quick-Don suit is a universal adult size that should fit almost anyone requiring it in emergency situations. 2.0 IMMERSION AND ANTI-EXPOSURE CLOTHING 2.1 HAZARDS Cold-water immersion is a life-threatening situation, and your survival depends on the clothing you wear. Cold, shock, hypothermia, loss of dexterity and mental sharpness and drowning are your primary concerns. Many strong swimmers drown within metres of safety in cold water. This suggests that many drown as a result of the rapid shock of immersion, causing immediate hyperventilation, water ingestion, and often heart failure, which may occur in water below 15 º C. 2 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

2.1.2 Without adequate buoyancy and insulation, individuals rely on swimming ability and endurance for survival. Your strength and endurance is seriously diminished in colder water, reducing your ability to overcome waves, currents, spray, etc Hypothermia results when your body loses heat faster than it can be replaced. This can occur in any environment below 37 º C, our normal body core temperature. Water conducts heat away from our body times faster than air, presenting a high risk Shivering is the body s way of generating heat to replace the heat that is lost. The smallest blood vessels constrict close to the skin, reducing the blood circulation to your hands and feet. Circulation to the body core is restricted, where it is needed most, resulting in a loss of dexterity. As the effect of cold increases, muscles weaken and stiffen, leading to the loss of feeling and reduced co-ordination. Your decision-making and thinking processes slow down Proper clothing reduces many of these hazards, improving your chances of survival. Clothing should provide insulation from the cold and should not hinder mobility. Buoyancy should be provided, either inherently in your outfit, or with an additional life preserver, preferably both Generally there are two types of immersion protective clothing: 2.2 WET SUITS a. Wet suits b. Dry suits Wet suits allow some water in, but restrict water movement into and out of the suit. Your body heats up the water that becomes, more or less, trapped in the suit. If the openings of the suit become restricted, the warmed water will stay inside the suit longer, so heat loss is reduced. If a wet suit is damaged or torn, the level of protection is reduced, although typically less than with dry suits The typically more comfortable wet suits are more appropriate for constant wear than are dry suits. 2.3 DRY SUITS Dry suits protect you during cold-water immersion by using the trapped air as an insulation layer from the cold water. Most dry suits utilise seals at the wrists, neck and ankles, unless incorporating gloves and boots. These seals are made from waterproof materials, insulated or non-insulated Quick-donning dry suits are typically bulkier than constant wear wet and dry suits, as they are built large enough to be an adult one size fits all garment The Quick-Don Immersion Coverall is an insulated dry suit, constructed of neoprene foam, which is 2 mm thick. The benefit of an insulted dry suit is that thermal protection is only marginally diminished by limited water ingress. 3 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

3.0 QUICK-DON FEATURES 3.1 SUIT Familiarize yourself with all the features of the suit to maximize its effectiveness. Illustrations are provided as an additional reference The bright red suit is constructed of 2 mm neoprene foam laminated with nylon Lycra on both sides. The foam is inherently fire retardant, and provides excellent insulation from the cold and good resistance to abrasion and puncture. The suit is not an extended wear garment and thus it is not breathable, making it very hot to wear while seated in an aircraft during extended flights. The neoprene foam is highly resistant to petroleum, oils, and lubricants. Figure 1. The Quick-Don Suit in the Water The Quick-Don dry suit is packed in a container for stowage, and includes a pair of 3 mm neoprene mitts (stored in sleeve pockets), and a 2 mm neoprene thermal hood (stored in the thigh pocket) The nylon lamination provides some tear resistance, and allows for a smoother external surface, providing increased comfort and ease in donning and doffing. The outer nylon lamination is red, for increased visibility during SAR activities. 3.2 FLOTATION The total inherent buoyancy of the MSD720 is dependent on the insulation thickness provided. The 2 mm suit provides 62 Newtons (14 lbs) effective buoyancy, and the 3 mm version provides 89 Newtons (20 lbs). Both the 2 mm and 3 mm versions are well within the maximum limit established by helicopter passenger suit standards of 156 Newtons (35 lbs). 3.3 HYPOTHERMIA PROTECTION Immersion in cold water is a danger for anyone working on or near the water. The length of time a person can survive in cold water largely depends on both the water s temperature and the thermal protection of their protective clothing. 4 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

3.3.2 To create the most effective protection against hypothermia, Mustang Survival begins by evaluating the clothing s immersed Clo value, which depicts the level of thermal insulation a garment provides. Clo is a measurement of insulation, much like the R values assigned to fibreglass house insulation. We determine the rate at which heat is lost from the body, as well as the difference in temperature between the skin and the water. Approximate predictions can be made, from the Immersed Clo values, of the rate at which a person s body temperature will drop in cold water. These values are included in Figure Figure 2 indicates random samples of Immersed Clo values and the corresponding estimation of survival time in cold water (assuming a thin person with a 5.5 º F (3 º C) drop in body core temperature) The Mustang model MSD720, 2 mm Immersion Coverall has been rated at 0.61 immersed Clo (calm water). The 3 mm Immersion Coverall has been rated at 0.77 immersed Clo (calm water). Figure 2. 9 NOTE: When using Figure 2, keep in mind that the chart was derived empirically by mathematical modeling and conservatively applied to the tenth percentile (thin) individual. 3.4 TESTING With the complexity of factors involved, there is no guarantee as to the accuracy of the predicted survival time on an individual case basis Each MSD720 Quick-Don is tested and proven 100% watertight. 3.5 WEIGHT AND DIMENSIONS The weight and dimensions listed are that of the immersion coverall rolled and packed in the storage case provided. Version Insulation Storage Dimensions Dry Weight Standard 2mm 16.5 cm X 48 cm or 6.5 X kg or 8 lbs. Custom 3mm 25 cm X 48 cm or 9.5 X 19 5 kg or 11 lbs. 3.6 NECK AND WRIST SEALS The seals are elastic, allowing the user to stretch each seal over their hand or head while donning. The seals incorporate small ribs around the circumference of the opening, providing added strength and tear resistance. However, the seals require careful usage to avoid rips, which would result in the loss of their waterproof seal Latex rubber deteriorates with age, causing the seals to lose their elasticity, and eventually crack when stretched. It is important that the seals are inspected, with the rest of the suit, at regular intervals to ensure they will seal properly when required. 6 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

3.6.3 To quickly check the seals: a. Grasp the seal opening with two fingers. b. Gently stretch the opening. c. Watch for cracks, nicks, or tears near the opening of the seal. Figure 3. Gently Stretching the Wrist Seal Opening Figure 4. Gently Stretching the Neck Seal Opening Return the suit immediately to Mustang for replacement upon detection of any of these damages. 7 This document is for information purposes only. 11 3.7 ENTRY ZIPPER The entry zipper (see Figure 5) is a heavy-duty neoprene zipper with nickel-silver teeth that provides a watertight seal when closed and is located across the front chest, extending out to both arms. Figure 5. Entry Zipper Hold left cuff while pulling zipper The zipper closes left to right, from the wearer s point of view. A nylon thong is attached to the zipper slider, assisting the wearer in opening and closing the zipper It is possible to close the zipper up yourself, although we highly recommend having someone assist. CAUTION: Avoid snagging your clothing in the zipper, as this can break the zipper s seal. Figure 6. Snagging Clothing in the Entry Zipper The zipper should always be left in the open position while the suit is packed in the container. The suit should be ready to don from the bag, as there is little time to open zippers while donning in an emergency. See section for zipper care procedures and for recommended zipper cleaners and lubricants. 8 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

3.8 ZIPPER THONG The zipper thong (see Figure 7), used to open and close the zipper, is constructed of one-inch wide black nylon webbing The free end of the thong incorporates three T-tabs, providing a positive grip. The Velcro on the under side of the last tab mates with the Velcro on the zipper. Always attach the zipper thong here to prevent snagging the zipper thong in the aircraft. Figure 7. Attached Zipper Thong Zipper Thong Attach zipper thong here 3.9 ADJUSTABLE WAIST STRAPS The waist straps (see Figure 8) are constructed of one-inch wide nylon webbing and provide adjustment after donning the suit. The straps also assist donning in non-emergency situations. If the straps are cinched right after pulling the suit up to the waist, then it will tend to stay up while you put on the sleeves and pull the neck seal over your head. The straps also assist in gathering up excess material. Figure 8. Adjustable Waist Straps Velcro T-tab 9 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

3.9.2 Make adjustments by pulling on the T-tabs at the free ends of the straps. The loose end should be secured with the Velcro on the opposite side of the waist (see Figure 8) ADJUSTABLE ANKLE STRAPS The ankle straps (see Figure 9) are constructed of one-inch wide nylon webbing and provide adjustment, and gathering of excess material, providing improved mobility while boarding rafts, etc. Figure 9. Adjustable Ankle Straps Velcro T-tab 3.11 STORAGE POCKETS The pockets (see Figure 10) are constructed of a polyurethane-coated orange nylon fabric and store the mitts and hood when not in use. The pockets for the mitts are located on each sleeve, just above the wrist seals, and open downward at the wrist end. Figure 10. Right Hand Mitt Pocket Velcro at pocket opening 10 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

The pocket for the hood is located on the right thigh and opens upward from the top of the pocket. The hood pocket incorporates two eyelets for water drainage. Figure 11. Hood Pocket Velcro at pocket opening Water drainage eyelet 11 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

3.12 THERMAL HOOD A great deal of body heat escapes from the head area. Insulating the head in immersion situations greatly enhances a person s opportunity to survive. The thermal hood is to be worn when needed, by removing it from the right thigh pocket and donning. Figure 12. Thermal Hood (Side and Front Views) Seam Sealing Tape Adjustable Neck Strap The thermal hood (see Figure 12) is constructed of 3 mm neoprene, laminated with nylon Lycra inside and out. The Lycra provides resistance to tears, allowing the hood to be donned easily. The hood is red for increased visibility and is connected to the pocket with a nylon strap, to avoid loss in high seas or adverse conditions. To avoid snagging during aircraft egress, disconnect the lanyard from the hood and store it the pocket An adjustment strap is provided at the neck to allow securing or adjustment, where necessary. The hood is universally sized and can be adjusted to fit by pulling on the free end of the adjustment strap, until a comfortably snug fit is achieved. NOTE: Wear the hood over the chin, while maintaining a breathing passage, for maximum coverage and protection. 12 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

3.13 THERMAL MITTS The three-finger style thermal mitts (see Figure 13) are constructed using 3 mm neoprene. The thumb and forefinger are separately covered to improve dexterity, and co-ordination while boarding a raft. The backs of the mitts use neoprene laminated with Lycra, whereas the palms use a textured neoprene for positive grip. The mitts are stowed in the sleeve pockets, and are attached to the pockets with nylon straps. Figure 13. Right Hand Thermal Mitt (Back and Palm Views) Textured Neoprene Neoprene/Lycra Adjustment Straps Right Hand Marking Snap The mitts are universally sized. Each mitt has a water restricting adjustment strap around the wrist area, and may be adjusted by pulling on the free end until it feels comfortably snug. The right mitt is stamped with R and the left is stamped with L. The snaps are reversed so the left mitt cannot be attached to the right pocket and vice versa FOOT SOLES The soles are laminated sharkskin neoprene (see Figure 14). The suit is shipped with an additional hard ribbed rubber covering, approximately 3 mm thick, which may be applied to the suit. The underlying soles of the suit provide protection for the softer neoprene material, and can safely be worn on most surfaces. The ribbing on the soles provides a non-slip contact area. 13 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

Figure 14. Foot Soles (Hard-ribbed Rubber Covering) 3.15 CONTAINER The coated orange nylon fabric container (see Figure 15) protects the suit and provides compact, convenient handling and storage. Figure 15. Container Cinch Strap Drawstring The container uses three cinch straps around its circumference to cinch the container down, reducing its packed volume. The container s opening incorporates a drawstring closure with a barrel lock, and the closed end of the bag incorporates a webbing handle to carry and handle the container Folding and packing procedures are described in section 5.0 of this manual. To remove the suit from the container: a. Release the three cinch straps. b. Open the drawstring closure fully at the open end of the bag. c. Grasp the webbing handle at the closed end, lift. 14 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

d. Shake up and down vigorously enough to allow the suit to drop out of the container on its own. 21 4.0 MAINTENENCE 4.1 GENERAL Proper care of this garment is extremely important for best results and extended service. Failure to follow the procedures outlined in this document for usage, maintenance, repair and general care may void any warranties for this product. 4.2 CLEANING Mud and soil stains should be removed from the suit. Allow the mud to dry and brush off with a soft bristle brush. Alternatively, rinse the suit with fresh warm water and remove the soil with a sponge or a soft brush and mild detergent. After cleaning, the suit should be thoroughly airdried Oil stains can sometimes be removed by gently scrubbing in warm water with a soft brush and household detergent. After cleaning, the suit should be thoroughly air-dried. 4.3 SERVICE Storage The Quick-Don dry suit is constructed of neoprene foam rubber; therefore it is important that the suits are stored in: a. A cool dry area, where an even temperature may be maintained. b. An area without excessive sunlight, ozone, and ultra violet rays, and is free of petroleum products, acids and other damaging contaminants. CAUTION: Never store the suit wet. Never hang the suit from the neck seal; doing so may result in suit damage Zipper Care Zipper cleaning is the first step to zipper longevity. Clean the zipper of any mud, sand, salt or foreign elements. First, use warm soapy water to remove any heavy deposits. Every few uses, apply a recommended wax after cleaning (see figure 21) for zipper lubrication. For example a daily use suit requires wax once a week. Figure 21. The suit may require flipping and additional drying time to ensure both sides are completely dry. Figure 31. Step j. (Suit Leakage Test) 4.5 REPAIRS The protection provided by this dry suit relies very much on its watertight characteristics. It is extremely important that damaged suits are handled in accordance with the following user repair requirements. These instructions provide critical information only in regards to the correct materials and procedures for suit repair by the user. 24 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

4.5.2 Qualified repair personnel can normally perform minor repairs, with adequate facilities. The manufacturer should do all major repairs. This section provides some information to assist with minor or emergency repairs to the suit and related components Stitching All stitching should be done with nylon thread and be a single needle lockstitch, conforming to type 301 of CAN/CGSB 54-GP-1. Stitching density should be eight to ten stitches per inch and all broken threads, seam ends and ends of stitching should be backstitched not less than 0.5 inch The nylon thread should meet the requirements of federal Standard V-T-295, Type II, Class 1, and Size E, preferably matching the colour of the material being sewn. Most of the seam allowances are 0.5 inch. WARNING: Do not stitch through any neoprene. All suit seams have been glued and taped, and any perforation of the neoprene with stitching will result in suit leakage All suit seams should be repaired as detailed in section of this document Leak Repairs Locate the leak and assess the reparability of the leak. Use the following section of this document Limits of Repair to make the assessment. In most cases, the manufacturer should repair the damage Limits of Repair It is recommended that the following guidelines be used in determining potential for repair. Patching will often yield effective repairs, when carried out in accordance with the instructions in this manual in cases such as: a. Slits and tears in the neoprene, up to a maximum of three inches long (see Figure 32). b. Holes up to a maximum of 1.5 inches in diameter. Perform minor repairs by following the procedures outlined below Repair Materials The full description and part numbers of the materials required for repairs are detailed in section 7.0 of this manual. Additionally, the Quick-Don Immersion Suit Repair Kit NSN is available from Mustang Survival Corp Gluing Gluing should only be performed in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area. Repair personnel should wear protective rubber gloves and follow the adhesive supplier s guidelines for use and preparation. All neoprene foam surfaces must be clean and dry prior to gluing. Mustang PN GL1001 (Bostick 1125A) adhesive glue is recommended for repairs Prior to gluing, the repair area (foam surfaces) should be cleaned thoroughly with toluene To glue a section of the suit: 25 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

4.5.8 Patching a. Apply three coats of the adhesive over the full contact area using a small brush. b. Apply the first coat and allow drying until tacky. c. Apply the second coat and allow to dry until tacky again, as above. d. Apply the third coat of adhesive and allow drying until tacky. e. Join the surfaces carefully by pressing together with the gloved fingers of both hands. f. Always leak test the suit after completion of repairs, after a minimum of twentyfour hours of drying, to ensure the repairs are watertight (see section of this document). g. The repair area must be allowed to dry for a minimum of 24 hours prior to wearing or re-issuing the suit All patching of minor tears and holes should be carried out as follows: a. The repair patches, made from the original material, (see Figure 32) must extend by not less than one inch beyond the perimeter of the damage; i.e. if the diameter of the jagged hole is one inch, the patch should be three inches in diameter. If a straight tear is 1.5 inches long, the patch should be 3.5 inches by two inches. L- shaped tears should be treated as round holes, reckoning the distance between the ends of the tear as the diameter. Figure 32. Simulated Tears and Suggested Patch Configurations (Not to Scale) Jagged Tear Patch Straight Tear Patch L-Shaped Tear Patch b. Patches should be circular or rectangular, with rounded corners cut out from the neoprene. 26 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

c. Repair closely grouped small holes or tears with one large patch, rather than several small ones. Patches must NOT overlap one another. d. The patch must not overlap tape or seams. e. All patches should be attached to the outside of the suit. The colour of the patch should preferably be orange or red. f. Follow the gluing procedures outlined in section g. Glued areas should be rolled firmly (with a suitable roller) to remove all entrapped air, channels and wrinkles. This helps to achieve an adequate bond. h. Always leak test the suit after completion of repairs, and after a minimum of twenty-four hours of drying, to ensure the repairs are watertight (see section of this document) Taping If a portion of a suit seam requires re-taping, then follow the procedures outlined below. Refer to section 7.0 for details of the adhesive and seam tape required for these repairs. To re-tape a seam: a. Cut the seam tape to the required length, allowing 0.5 inch extra at each end. b. Round the corners of the tape with scissors. c. Remove the damaged portion of the existing seam tape to the best of your ability. d. Prepare the surface of the suit with toluene. e. Apply three coats of adhesive, as outlined in section of this document. NOTE: The surfaces of the tape don t need to be prepared with adhesive when the neoprene surface has already been properly prepared. f. Peel off the backing from the seam tape before applying to the surface of the neoprene g. Apply the seam tape to the repair area. h. Firmly roll the glued areas with a suitable roller to remove entrapped air, channels, and wrinkles. i. 31 5.0 FOLDING AND PACKING PROCEDURE 5.1 Fold and pack of the Quick-Don dry suit using the following steps. The folding and packing takes a little practice, as the container is designed to be just large enough to store a properly rolled suit (see Figure 40). 5.2 The points of reference used here are from the perspective of the individual folding and packing the suit. To fold and pack the Quick-Don: a. Ensure that the entry zipper is in the open position. Rub a recommended lubricant on the zipper for a smoother action. Put talc powder on the inside of the wrist and neck seals to reduce sticking. b. Lay the suit flat on its front on a flat, clean surface, allowing the suit to be fully extended with none of the parts overlapping. c. Fold the left leg. Figure 33. Steps a., b. and c. (Folding and Packing) 28 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

d. Starting from the feet; roll the legs up towards the head as tightly as possible. Figure 34. Step d. (Folding and Packing) e. Ensure that the fold positions do not change while rolling the suit. Figure 35. Step e. (Folding and Packing) 29 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

f. Ensure that the neck seal is folded over towards the chest of the suit when the suit is rolled. Figure 36. Step f. (Folding and Packing) g. Fold the left arm in half, and fold again over the suit. Figure 37. Step g. (Folding and Packing) h. Fold the right arm in half, and fold again over the suit. Figure 38. Step h. (Folding and Packing) 30 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled

i. Folded suit is as shown. Figure 39. Step i. (Folding and Packing) j. Ensure that the cord and cord lock are opened fully on the stowage bag and pack the rolled suit into it. k. After the suit is packed into the bag, the cord must be pulled snug and the cord lock must be locked in place to ensure that the bag does not open. l. Ensure that the straps on the side of the bag are pulled as snug as they will go. Figure 40. Steps j. through l. (Folding and Packing) 31 This document is for information purposes only. 35 6.0 SUMMARY The Mustang Survival Immersion Coverall Model MSD720, or Quick-Don, is an emergency dry-suit that protects aircrew in harsh marine environments with cold-water immersion features and inherent buoyancy. The universally sized neoprene suit is easily donned, maintained and stored. Qualified technicians, with proper equipment, or Mustang Survival Corp may make suit repairs. A well maintained Quick-Don means survival in emergency situations for which normal clothes were not designed. 32 This document is for information purposes only. It is not a controlled
