2 Equipment to Measure, Control and Manage Data American Meter Company Supplies the industry s broadest line of equipment for the measurement, control and data management in applications using natural gas and dry industrial gases. This equipment is used in virtually every application imaginable, from local measurement of gas consumption by a single burner; to monitoring complete transmission and distribution systems. This catalog presents a very brief overview of the tools available from American Meter. For more detailed information, request the data bulletin for that specific product. And, don t hesitate to contact us with any questions involving gas measurement This typical system illustrates the elements of a basic meter installation with the associated equipment normally included. 1. Filters remove particulate such as pipe scale which could impair the operation or accuracy of regulators, meters or gasburning equipment. 2. An upstream pressure regulator reduces line pressure and provides a stable pressure to the meter. 3. The meter itself which could be monitoring the gas usage of an entire plant or a single piece of equipment. 4. An electronic flow computer, or correcting device. 5. A downstream regulator to further reduce gas pressure as required for specific equipment.. 5 3

3 American Meter products provide accurate, reliable and costeffective measurement of gas flows in every conceivable application. For industrial applications, there are products suitable for measuring the gas consumption of a complete plant, a particular department or a single piece of equipmentm that can provide management with information needed to operate more efficiently. A comprehensive program of monitoring and controlling natural gas, compressed air and process gas consumption provides a number of benefits: reduced energy waste and operating costs true cost accounting through accurate energy usage data identification of inefficient equipement for more timely meaintenance, overhaul or reloacement possible tax savings through documentation of gas used for manufacturing accurate monitoring of transportation gas purchased from one supplier and delivered bu the pipeline of a second company warnings of possible equipment malfunction Glossary Standard (base) conditions: 60ºF (520ºR) temperature and psia pressure. Actual cubic feet: Volumetric measurement of gas at actual line conditions of temperature and pressure. Standard cubic feet: Volumetric measurement of gas at standard conditions of temperature and pressure. Cubic feet per hour (CFH), Standard cubic feet per hour (SCFH): Measurement of gas flow rate in acutal or standard cubic feet per hour. Uncorrected volume: The volume of gas measured at line temperature and pressure. Corrected volume: The uncorrected volume measurement which has been converted to the equivalent volume in standard cubic feet. Atmospheric pressure: The local, or ambient pressure at a location. Near sea level, atmospheric pressure is approximately 14.7 psia. Gauge pressure: The pressure above atmospheric pressure, normally expressed as psig. Absolute pressure: The pressure above a perfect vacuum. Absolute pressure is equal to the sum of atmospheric pressure and gauge pressure, normally expressed as psia. Inches water column (W.C.): A unit of pressure measurement. One inch of water column equals psi. Rangeability: The ratio of maximum capacity to minimum capacity over which a meter will operate with specified accuracy. Factors Affecting Gas Measurement Pressure and temperature Gas meters preform measurements at line conditions of pressure and temperature. This measurement is known as the uncorrected volume. In most applications, it s necessary to convert uncorrected volume to the equivalent volume at standard conditions (corrected volume). At line pressures above psia, the corrected volume will be greater than the uncorrected volume. The effect of pressure can be calculated as follows: Standard cubic feet= Actual cubic feet X Atmospheric pressure + gauge pressure psia When actual flowing temperatures are above the standard condition of 60ºF, corrected volume will be less than uncorrected volume. (Conversely, at temperatures below 60ºF, corrected volume will be greater.) The effect of temperature can be calculated as follows: Standard cubic feet= Actual cubic feet X 460ºF + 60ºF 460ºF + flowing temperature (ºF) In actual practice, some type of correcting device is normally used with a meter to automatically convert to standard cubic feet. For diaphragm and turbine meters in an application where line pressure is stable, the meter can be supplied with an index that corrects for a constant pressure. Diaphragm meters can also be supplies with a compensating tangent for temperature correction. For turbine meters and larger capacity diaphragm meters an electronic corrector is normally used. Specific Gravity Capacity data for the meters in this catalog are based on natural gas, with a specific gravity of A change in specific gravity will not change the capacity of a turbine meter. However, specific gravity will affect the maximum capacity of diaphragm meters. For data on gases with other specific gravities see page 17. While current at the time of printing, specifications In this catalog are subject to change as a result of American Meter s ongoing product improvement efforts.

4 Selecting the Correct Meter American Meter supplies three types of meters, diaphragm, rotary and turbine. Diaphragm meters are positive displacement devices that have fixedvolume measurement compartments formed by a twosided diaphragm. A small pressure drop across the meter causes it to cycle so these compartments alternately fill with gas at the inlet, and then empty at the outlet. By counting the number of cycles, the meter provides a measure of gas volume. Rotary meters are also positive displacement measurement devices. In this case, a pair of hourglass shaped impellers form the fixed volume compartments. When downstream demand initiates the flow of gas, the impellers rotate to receive a fixed volume of gas at the inlet and then discharge it at the outlet. In place of fixedvolume compartments, a turbine meter has a rotor in the gas system. As gas flows through the meter, the rotor turns at a speed that is proportional to the rate of gas flow. Deciding which type meter is the best choice for a particular application depends on: The pressure of the gas being measured The maximum flow rate to be measured The minimum flow rate to be measured Gas pressure The first consideration in selecting a gas meter is the pressure of the gas being measured. Depending on the specific model, diaphragm meters have pressure ratings up to 100 psig. Rotary meters can operate at pressures up to 175 psig. For applications above 175 psig, select a turbine meter. Minimum and maximum flow Rates In applications with line pressures less than 100 psig and maximum flow rates of 850 SCFH or less, always choose a diaphragm meter. For flow rates higher than 141,000 SCFH, a turbine meter is the correct choice. For applications with maximum flow rates between 850 and 50,000 SCFH and lone pressures less than 100 psig, diaphragm, rotary or turbine meters can be considered. For flow rates between 50,000 and 141,000 SCFH and line pressures up to 125 psig, the choice will be between rotary or turbine meters. Another consideration to keep in mind when selecting a gas meter is the rangeability of the meter. Rangeability is the ratio of maximum flow rate to minimum flow rate which can be measured within the specified accuracy of the meter. American Meter diaphragm meters provide an accuracy of +1% of reading with a ranageability of 100 to 1. Therefore, an AC250 meter with a maximum capacity of 250 standard CFH (SCFH) will provide 1% accuracy for flow rates from 2.5 to 250 SCFH. For rotary meters, rangeability at 1% accuracy ranges from 20:1 up to 50:1 depending on the meter size. For applications where 2% accuracy is sufficient, rotary meters will provided rangeabilities up to 90 to 1. For turbine meters, ranageability increases at higher pressures providing a wider operating range at these pressures. For example, a 3GTS turbine meter operating at a line pressure of 0.25 psig has a rangeability of 12:1. The maximum capacity of the meter is 10,000 SCFH, providing an operating range of 833 to 10,000 SCFH with accuracy of 1% of reading. The same meter is an application with line pressure of 100 psig has a rangeability of 33:1 and a maximum capacity of 78,000 SCFH so it will measure from 2,360 to 78,000 SCFH with 1% accuracy psig (99.8 Bar) Meter Selection by Capacity and Pressure 175 psig (12 Bar) Rotary or Turbine Meters 100 psig (6.9 Bar) Line Pressure Diaphragm Meters Diaphragm Rotary or Turbine Meters Turbine Meters 1 psig (69 mbar) 10 (0.28) 1000 (28.32) 50,000 (1416) 141,000 (3993) 18,000,000 (509,760)

12 Pressure Regulation and Control 8 American Meter pressure regulators are used (a) upstream of a gas meter to reduce inlet pressure to the meter and eliminate fluctuations which can affect meter accuracy and (b) downstream from the meter to provide reduced pressure for gas operated equipment. Factors which determine the selection of a pressure regulator are: Inlet pressure to the regulator The outlet pressure which the regulator must maintain The required capacity of the regulator in SCFH Regulators frequently include options for protection against upset conditions. The most common of these include: Overpressure shutoff (OPSO) the ability to shut down the gas supply if outlet pressure exceeds a predetermined value. Underpressure (UPSO) the ability to shut down the gas supply if outlet pressure falls below a predetermined value Full capacity relief the ability to maintain downstream pressure under upset conditions by venting excess gas to the atmosphere Series 1200 regulators Capacity:2,000 SCFH (56.6 SCMH) Inlet pressures:up to 125 psig (8.6 Bar) Outlet pressure range:3 S.C. to 5 psig (7.5 to 345 mbar) Connection sizes:1/2, ¾. 1 Available with overpressure shutoff and full capacity internal relief Sales Bulletin SB 8505 SB 8506 Series 1800C regulators Series 1800B2 regulators Capacity:2,500 SCFH (70.8 SCMH) Inlet pressures:up to 125 psig (8.6 Bar) Outlet pressure range:3.5 W.C. to 2 psig (8.7 to 138 mbar) Connection sizes:3/4, 1, 11/4 Available with overpressure shutoff, underpressure shutoff and full capacity internal relief Sales Bulletin SB 8510 Series 1800CPB2 regulators Capacity:10,200 SCFH (288.9 SCMH) Inlet pressures:up to 125 psig (8.6 Bar) Outlet pressure range:130 psig (69 mbar to 2.1 Bar) Connection sizes:3/4, 1, 11/4 Sales Bulletin SB 8520 Sales Bulletin SB 8530 Series 1800 PFM regulators Capacity:11,000 SCFH (311.5 SCMH) Inlet pressures:up to 125 psig (8.6 Bar) Outlet pressure range:2 to 30 psig (138 mbar to 2.1 Bar) Connection sizes:11/2, 2 threaded; 2 flanged Available with overpressure shutoff Sales Bulletin SB 8551 Series 1800 regulators Capacity:20,000 SCFH (566.4 SCMH) Inlet pressures:up to 150 psig (10.3 Bar) Outlet pressure range:3.5 W.C. to 5 psig (8.7 to 345 mbar) Connection sizes:11/2, 2 threaded; 2 flanged Available with overpressure shutoff, underpressure shutoff and full capacity internal relief Sales Bulletin SB 8540 Connection sizes:11/2, 2 threaded; 2 flanged Available with overpressure shutoff and underpressure shutoff Sales Bulletin SB 8540 Series 3000 regulators Capacity:80,000 SCFH ( SCMH) Inlet pressures:up to 30 psig (2.1 Bar) Outlet pressure range:1 to 30 psig (69 mbar to 2.1 Bar) Connection sizes:11/2, 11/2, 2 threaded; 2, 3, 4 flanged Sales Bulletin SB 8535 Axial Flow Valves Capacity:37,000,000 SCFH (1,047,840 SCMH) Inlet pressures:up to 1480 psig (102.1 Bar) Outlet pressure range:5 W.C. to 600 psig (12 mbar to 41.4 Bar) Connection sizes:2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 flanged The American Meter Axial Flow Valve can be used for pressure regulation, overpressure relief, flow control or as an on/off valve. 16 Automated Meter Reading Systems 12 The TRACE TM system provides automated meter reading through the use of shortrange radio signals sent to and received from a transponder installed on each meter. It has been designed to provide a system that can be installed in stages, with minimum disruption to current operations, while providing immediate payback on the investment. Initially, TRACE transponders can be installed only on hardtoread meters with data being collected with the same handheld terminals currently in use for manual meter reading. Since these meter reads are the most expensive in the system, TRACE provides an immediate increase in productivity, and in the accuracy of your billing data. Once these problems are solved, entire routes can be automated using a Mobile Interrogation Unit which fits into any car, van or truck. TRACE is fundamentally different from other mobile RF technologies. These systems broadcast a universal inquiry signal which triggers a response from every meter within range. This flood of data is difficult to manage and leads to errors and misreads which are often not discovered until the entire route is complete. TRACE, however, queries each meter individually and assures an accurate response from each meter. The Pantheon/TRACE software system provides the tools to strategically implement AMR at a level appropriate to your needs, with the flexibility to accommodate future growth. Pantheon/TRACE provides management of all meter reading functions and has the flexibility to migrate to complete enterprisewide information management. Route and customer account information from existing CIS/Billing systems is automatically transferred to the handheld terminals and read data is easily formatted and downloaded to CIS/Billing or virtually any external information system. The software features an intuitive Windows graphical interface, route management functions, and an extensive report library with a wizardstyle user interface. Transponder The TRACE transponder can be installed on virtually any gas meter in service today. The unit is a combination encoder and radio frequency transceiver. When the transponder receives an interrogation signal with its unique serial number, it transmits a 32bit data stream that includes the current meter reading, tamper detection status, and error detection code value. The transponder is powered by a lithium thionly chloride battery with a calculated life in excess of 12 years under normal pulseloading conditions. Data Bulletin PDB MiniMobile Interrogator (MMI) The MMI is a complete data retrieval and storage system for reading large numbers of meters. The suitcasesize unit will fit into any car, van, or truck and is completely portable from vehicle to vehicle. The MMI allows you to completely automate one or more meter reading route at a fraction of the cost of conventional mobile meter reading systems. The MMI uses Global Positioning System (GPS) to track transponder location. Data Bulletin PDB Vehicular Interactive Display (VID) The optional Vehicular Interactive Display is used with the MMI to maximize productivity of the AMR function. Vehicle location and the location of each transponder are displayed on a detailed electronic map. Each transponder is shown as a point of light. As a correct read is obtained for a transponder, it is deleted from the map. If a correct read is not obtained, the transponder location remains lit, allowing the operator to take immediate corrective action. This penbased computer display is based on longitude and latitude, and exclusive feature of the TRACE System. Universal Radio Frequency Interface (URFI) The Universal Radio Frequency Interface is an American Meter feature that allows utilities to reduce start up costs and training expenses while implementing automated meter reading. The URFI is a plugin adapter that will allow any current DOScompatible handheld data terminal to transmit and receive data from TRACE transponders. With the URFI, a utility s existing handheld terminals can accommodate both manual reads and transponderequipped meters, extending the return on investment made in this equipment. Data Bulletin PDB Short Range Programmer (SRP) The Short Range Programmer is a programming and diagnostic tool for TRACE transponders. The maximum range of the device is approximately four inches, which eliminate problems of nearby transponders replying unintentionally. Very low power consumption provides 24 hours of operating time for a single battery charge. The battery can be recharged from a vehicle cigarette lighter, or any external 12 V supply. Extremely easy to use, the SRP has a keyboard to enter the serial number and index reading of the transponder, for troubleshooting, or for programming new installations. The SRP will also detect pressure compensated transponders and display a menu of compensation factors that allows the operator to choose the correct option.

18 14 Remeter Services The North American Services Group of American Meter was formed to meet the needs of the dynamic and changing North American natural gas utilities marketplace. With the mandate to develop and provide complete valueadded services within the United States and Canada, the North American Services Group brings together the measurement, control and information systems expertise of both the American and Canadian Meter group of companies. North American Services Group offers a complete Remeter: program for all makes and types of aluminum case, diaphragmtype meters; Reverify, Reverify and Adjust, Refurbish, RefurbishPlus and Remanufacture. Reverify The reverification program is designed to provide utilities with a viable in/out or pass through test. Incoming meters first receive a visual inspection, focused upon identifying and removing any meters with obvious signs of casting damage, severe corrosion, index damage, etc. A theft awareness inspection is also performed at this point. Meters passing these integrity inspections are then processed to completion, primed and finish painted, and have a new index box installed. Meters which fail the reverification program are documented as to the cause of failure and can, at the customer s discretion, be condemned, returned, or if suitable, processed under one of the other Remeter programs. Reverify and Adjust This program provides all of the processes and testing included in the Reverify program plus the additional services of proving and adjusting the meter to customer specifications using the latest sonic nozzle proving systems. Refurbish The Refurbish program is designed to provide a detailed and complete abovethetable repair of residential and commercial diaphragmtype gas meters. All critical wear parts affecting measurement accuracy and all pressure retaining components are replaced with OEM or OEMequivalent parts. In addition, the meters undergo a number of processes, including all quality assurance checks performed In Reverification. Meters are also pressure tested in accordance with normal operating pressures. For residential and 400series meters, refurbishing is restricted to meters no more than twenty years old. Because of the more severe service life and load profile of commercial meters above the 400 class is restricted to meters no more than fifteen years old. RefurbishPlus The North American Services Group RefurbishPlus program will meet the needs of utilities wishing to have a level of belowthetable work performed. OEM or OEMequivalent parts are used and completed meters carry a oneyear warranty. All parts and processes in the Refurbish program are included plus work belowthetable. In addition, meters are pressure tested to badged working pressures. Residential meters and 400series meters up to thirty years old are candidates for the RefurbishPlus program. With programs ranging from reverification to complete remanufacturing, North American Services Group can provide complete cradletograve meter management services.

19 Remeter Services continued Remanufacture Remanufacturing involves the complete tear down of diaphragm meter to the aluminum core casting components. These castings are then remanufactured into current production meters. Because of the extensive nature of the work performed, the Remanufacture program is limited to American Meter diaphragm meters. Residential meters of applicable vintage are stripped down to the core casting and remanufactured using the dame manufacturing techniques, processes and quality assurance criteria used in the production of brand new meters. All internal components, including the valve seat, are replaced. When these meters are returned to the customer, they meet the specifications of new American Meter or Canadian Meter residential products and carry the same applicable warranties. For American and Canadian Meters class 400 and larger, all parts with the exception of valve seats are replaced. Like residential products, these meters meet the same manufacturing and quality criteria as new meters and carry the same warranty. Remanufacturing offers an environmentally attractive option to scrapping old meters preserving a non renewable resource and conserving energy. Metrology Services The Metrology Department of North American Services Group provides meter shop consulting and complete meter proving services for the natural gas industry. These services include inhouse training programs, correlation studies and complete SNAP and bell prover calibration and certification. The Metrology Department also provides proving equipment and accessories, including sonic nozzle provers with the capability of testing flows from 25 CFH up to 14,000 CFH as well as associated equipment for bell provers. North American Services Group also offers a program where these proving devices can be maintained and calibrated through service contracts. These programs have been developed to provide utility companies with a high quality, costbeneficial meter service option, either as an outsource facility to handle excess meter shop capacity or as an alternative to the traditional utilityowned and operated meter shop. In all cases, meters are processed using stateoftheart assembly and testing techniques and programs are clearly and completely identified and consistently performed. 15 The Metrology Department is equipped with a full range of bell and sonic nozzle provers capable of verifying flow rates from 25 to 14,000 CFH. With curbside proving programs, North American Services Group saves utilities the time and expense of pulling meters from service in order to prove them.

20 Test Equipment 16 SNAP Sonic Nozzle Auto Prover SNAP combines stateoftheart electronics with precisely machined sonic nozzles to provide unparalleled speed and accuracy in gas meter proving. 21 Guide to Other Gases The meters in this catalog may be used to measure a wide variety of gases in addition to natural gas. When using a diaphragm meter, you must account for the fact that the maximum capacity of the meter will Fg= vary with the specific gravity of the gas being measured. To accuracy size a diaphragm meter, the rated capacity must be multiplied by a capacity conversion factor (Fg) S.G. of gas on which rated capacity is based Since capacity data for American meters is based on natural gas, the following table includes capacity conversion factors which can be used to convert from natural gas to the specific gas shown. For example, the conversion factor for nitrogen is: Fg= Fg= S.G. of natural gas S.G. of nitrogen S.G. of gas to be measured Fg= 0.79 Gas Specific Gravity (S.G.) Category B: Service life varies according to deleterious effects of the specific gas and any contaminants. Notes: Do not use American meters to measure oxygen. For gases not listed and high purity gas applications, consult your local distributor or contact American Meter. 1. Conversion factor varies with the specific gravity of the particular gas. 2. For very light gases such as hydrogen and helium, the conversion factor method of calculating maximum capacity may result in excessive mechanical speeds of the meter. Therefore, the maximum conversion factor is calculated based on a specific gravity of Also known as perfluropene.
