2 Update/Reminder Update To the Fourth Quarter 2008 Training Bulletin There has been a change to the Fourth Quarter 2008 Training Bulletin article, The PADI Instructor Manual Evolves, which announced that PADI Instructors will receive the English digital version of the streamlined instructor manual when renewing membership for Instead, this streamlined manual will be released at the end of 2009, as a 2010 renewal benefit, when all changes to the IDC curriculum and related materials are released. This will make the transition to new materials effi cient for new instructor candidates as well as for experienced instructors. As a benefit of 2009 renewal, PADI Instructors will receive the PADI Instructor Manual, digital version, updated with the changes as listed in the following pages. Each candidate s IDC/IE paperwork must include one of the following: A check in the box on the revised Instructor Certificate of Completion indicating that the candidate already has the EFR Instructor credential; Documentation of a current CPR and first aid instructor credential from another organization; or An EFR Instructor Application sent in with the IDC/IE paperwork to indicate that the candidate just completed the program. 3 PADI Standards Changes PADI Standards 2009 Key Updates The changes for the translated version of the Instructor Manual 2009 in Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish in the Errata document can be downloaded from the PADI Pros Site. You also find these on the Digital Instructor Manual 2009 renewal disc. Standards changes listed may be put into effect immediately, and must be implemented in PADI courses and programs as of 1 August These changes will appear in the 2009 PADI Instructor Manual. A Word About Instructor Judgment Because PADI Standards define PADI course content and performance requirements for programs conducted around the world, they must fit a large variety of teaching circumstances. You need to continue to adapt courses and programs to the local area (including following any laws or regulations in the region), using good judgment. Maximum limits Standards for ratios and depths, for example, are listed as maximum limits for the program you are teaching. This means that you must apply sound judgment in determining what is appropriate for your training each time you conduct a program. Diver-to-instructor ratios listed are maximum limits. Consider variables such as water conditions, temperature, visibility, water movement, entries/exits, the abilities of your student divers as compared with the demands of the planned dive, the number of certified assistants available, participant characteristics, etc., when you decide what ratio fits the situation, and reduce ratios appropriately, if warranted. Minimum requirements Conversely, standards such as course prerequisites (logged dive requirements, age requirements, instructor ratings required to teach the course) are listed as minimums. For example, when a course age prerequisite minimum is 10 years old, this is the absolute youngest age you may accept. You must apply prudent judgment to determine whether a particular 10-year old is ready for the course or program. Your PADI professional training, experience and the wealth of PADI resources available to you as a PADI Member such as the various PADI manuals, references, Training Bulletins, The Undersea Journal, Pros Site and the Training Department staff at your PADI Office are yours to help you make sound judgments when you have a question. 4 erdpml erdpml Frequently Asked Questions Q: How do you determine the maximum depth for a second or third level on a multilevel dive with the erdpml where is this information? A: This information is located on page 82 in the Instructions for Use booklet. If you select a depth that is greater than one allowed, you will receive the Exceeds ML Ascent Limit message. This message prompts you to go back and input a shallower depth. Q: Why do you receive different answers when working the same dive profile on the erdpml, the RDP Table, and the erdp? A: The reason for this is that the erdpml uses The Wheel data in the program, which allows dive planning to 2 meters/ 5 foot increments. For example, a 23 meters/72 foot dive would round to 25 meters/80 feet on the Table and the erdp, but on the erdpml, it would round to 24 meters/75 feet. If you compare the erdpml with the original erdp and table, you will get different answers some of the time (just as you do when comparing table and The Wheel answers). Q: What training aids are available for the erdpml? A: There are two: 1. A PowerPoint presentation that overviews the background, theory and use of the erdpml that you can download from the PADI Pros site; and 2. An erdpml Desktop Version you can use to demonstrate the product s use, which supplements the PowerPoint presentation. Order the erdpml, desktop version (Product Number 70903) from your Sales Consultant. erdpml Safety Stop Prompt All PADI Members should be aware that the new erdpml may not always prompt users when a safety stop rule applies. Decals with the following text have been created to address this: Caution: Planning Multilevel Dives, in Section Four of the Instructions for Use, states that the erdpml will prompt you if a required safety stop applies (Rule 2). However, depending upon the specifics of a multilevel profile, this may not always be the case. Simply always doing a safety stop of 3 minutes at 5m/15ft, as is recommended for all dives, will resolve any question. (Single level dives are not affected by this notice.) If you ordered the erdpml prior to 28 August 2008, decal(s) will be automatically shipped to you. 5 erdpml Integrating The erdpml Into Exams The erdpml allows dive planning in 2 meters/5 foot increments. Therefore, the answers derived using the erdpml may vary slightly (when compared to the table, erdp or The Wheel), requiring some revision to quiz and exam questions or to practice questions in the Diving Knowledge Workbook. In addition, one Knowledge Review question in Chapter Four in the PADI Open Water Diver Manual requires revision. These revised products incorporate the erdpml: PADI Open Water Diver Quizzes and Exam PADI Divemaster Decompression Theory and the Recreational Dive Planner exam The Diving Knowledge Workbook, Recreational Dive Planner section PADI Open Water Diver Manual, Chapter Four Knowledge Review and answer key You can find these errata on the PADI Pros Site, Members Toolbox, Exam Revisions. There are no changes to the exam answer keys. The Recreational Dive Planner exams in the PADI Instructor Candidate Workbook and the PADI Course Director Manual will not be revised this year, but you can identify the changes needed to accommodate the erdpml under the Instructor Development heading on the PADI Pros site homepage.
