3 and Information about this Performance Task Manual The following information is provided to the student to assist them with this program and with the policies and procedures of the South Carolina Fire Academy. As a student in this program, it is your responsibility to familiarize and be able to perform all skills as outlined in this manual, please address any concerns to your Lead Instructor prior to the assigned evaluation date. The following is the retest policy of the South Carolina Fire Academy: Students not earning a PASS rating on the first attempt can make an immediate second attempt (no coaching is allowed). Should the student not earn a PASS rating on the second attempt, a retest of the unsuccessful skill must be scheduled no sooner than thirty (30) days but no later than 180 days from the original test date. This must be set-up through the Regional Coordinator. The student will be allowed to continue with the evaluation. Task steps which are in BOLD print are classified as CRITICAL SKILL STEPS these steps must be addressed by the student, if it is not addressed by the student, the Evaluator shall stop the student and a failure for the attempt will be recorded. An overall passing score requires successful completion of all Critical Skills in any skill set in addition, to achieve an overall passing score no more than two(2) non-critical skills failures in any skill set shall be recorded. 6 Firefighter I Performance Task Evaluation Sheet 7-1 Objective : Inspect, clean, and store rope. (NFPA 1001, 5.5.1) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will clean, inspect, and store rope. The procedures are the general steps for cleaning rope. Methods of washing vary with each rope manufacturer, so it is always advisable to contact them for specific cleaning and drying instructions for the type of rope being cleaned. 7 Firefighter I Performance Task Objective : Skills Evaluation Checklist Inspect, clean, and store rope. Task Steps 1st 2nd Clean Rope 1. Clean the rope according to manufacturer s guidelines. 2. Thoroughly rinse the rope. 3. Dry the rope according to manufacturer s recommendations. Inspect and Store Rope 1. Using hands, inspect the entire length of the rope for soft, crusty, stiff, or brittle sports; areas of excessive stretching; cuts, nicks and abrasions. 2. Visually inspect the entire length of the rope for exterior nicks, cuts, dirt, embedded objects, and other obvious flaws, as well as cleanliness. 3. Determine if rope has been impact loaded, overloaded, chemically contaminated, or does not meet life-safety reuse requirements. 4. Remove any flawed rope from service, disposing of it or labeling it as utility rope per local protocol. 5. Record information in rope logbook. 6. Store rope per local protocol. 8 1153- NFPA Firefighter 1 Performance Task Evaluation Sheet 7-10 Objective: Tie a becket bend. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.1) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will correctly tie a becket bend. Full protective clothing Rope Evaluator must initial outcome Task Steps 1 st 2nd 1. Form a bight in one of the ends to be tied (if two ropes of unequal diameter are being tied, the bight always goes in the larger of the two). 2. the end of the second rope through the bight. 3. 9 Firefighter I Performance Task Evaluation Sheet 7-2 Objective : Coil and uncoil a rope. (NFPA 1001, 5.5.1) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will coil and uncoil a rope. Coiling rope so that it may be uncoiled and placed in service with little delay is very important in the fire service. An improperly coiled handline or lifeline could result in the failure of an operation. If the coil is not carefully prepared, the rope may not pay out to the ground. 10 Firefighter I Performance Task Objective : Skills Evaluation Checklist Coil and uncoil a rope. Task Steps 1st 2nd 1. Measure off and reserve a length of rope (about three times the distance between the standards the structures used as a support) at the front of the rope to secure the coil when completed. 2. Drape this length of rope over the standards. 3. Wrap the remaining rope around the standards until sufficient width is developed. It may be necessary to make two layers to coil all of the rope. 4. Wrap the last portion of the rope around the loops. 5. Fasten the end securely by tucking the end of the rope under the last wrap. 6. Form a bight with the length measured in Step Insert the bight through the end of the coil as shown. 8. Place the end of the rope through the opposite end of the coil. 9. Insert the end of the rope through the bight. 10. Finish the coil by tucking the end of the rope next to the end in Step Remove the coils from the standards. 12. Untie the rope that is securing the coil. 13. Begin uncoiling the rope. 14. Continue to uncoil the rope while avoiding the creation of knots or tangles. 11 Evaluation Sheet 7-3 Objective : Tie the single overhand knot. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.2) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will tie the single overhand knot. As an added measure of safety, it is recommended that an overhand safety knot be used whenever tying any type of knot. The simple yet effective overhand safety eliminates the danger of the working end of the rope slipping back through the knot, thus causing the knot to fail. Full protective clothing Rope Evaluator must initial outcome 1. Select enough rope to form the size of the loop desired. 2. Form an overhand loop in the standing part. 3. the working end upward through the loop. Task Steps 1 st 2nd 4. the working end over the top of the loop under the standing part. 5. Bring the working end completely around the standing part and down through the loop. 6. Pull the knot snugly into place, forming an inside bowline with the working end on the inside of the loop. 7. Full protective clothing Rope Evaluator must initial outcome Task Steps 1 st 2nd 1. Form a loop in your left hand with the working end to the right crossing under the standing part. 2. Form another loop in your right hand with the working end crossing under the standing part. 3. Slide the right hand loop on top of the left hand loop. 4. Hold the two loops together at the rope, forming the clove hitch. 5. Slide the knot over the object. 6. Pull the ends in opposite directions to tighten. 14 Evaluation Sheet 7-6 Objective: Tie a clove hitch around an object. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.2) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will tie a clove hitch around an object. Because the open clove hitch cannot be slipped onto an object with no free end (such as the center of a hoseline), this method is used on objects with no free end or with a distant free end. Piece of rope (for example, 6-foot to 20- foot [1.8 m to 6 m] length of ½-inch [13 mm] rope) Task Steps 1st 2nd 1. Make one complete loop around the object, crossing the working end over the standing part. 2. Complete the round turn about the object just above the first loop as shown. 3. the working end under the upper wrap, just above the cross. 4. Set the hitch by pulling. 15 Evaluation Sheet 7-7 Objective : Tie a figure eight. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.2) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will tie a figure eight. A figure-eight knot is stronger than a bowline, easy to tie and untie, inspect, and keep neat. There are several variations of the figure-eight knot commonly used in the rescue service. Piece of rope (for example, 6-foot to 20- foot [1.8 m to 6 m] length of ½-inch [13 mm] rope) 1. Make a loop in the rope. Task Steps 1st 2nd 2. the working end completely around the standing part. 3. Insert the end of the rope back through the loop. 4. Dress the knot by pulling on both the working end and standing part of the rope at the same time. 16 Evaluation Sheet 7-8 Objective : Tie a figure-eight bend. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.2) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will tie a figure-eight bend. The figure-eight bend is one of the knots in the figure-eight family. Piece of rope (for example, 6-foot to 20- foot [1.8 m to 6 m] length of ½-inch [13 mm] rope) 1. Tie a figure eight know on one end of the rope. Task Steps 1st 2nd 2. Feed the end of the other rope through the figure-eight knot in reverse. It should follow the exact oath of the original knot. 3. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.1) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will correctly tie a figure eight on a bight. Full protective clothing Rope Evaluator must initial outcome 1. Form a bight in the working end of the rope. 2. it over the standing part to form a loop. Task Steps 1 st 2nd 3. the bight under the standing part and then over the loop and down through it; this forms the figure eight. 4. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.1) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will correctly prepare a roof ladder for hoisting. Full protective clothing Rope (x2) Roof Ladder Evaluator must initial outcome Task Steps 1 st 2nd 1. Lower an appropriate length of rope from the intended destination of the ladder. 2. Make a loop in the end of the roop using a bowline knot. 3. Place the closed loop under the ladder snd bring it up between the rung about one-third the distance from the hoisting end. 4. Tighten the loop around the beams, pulling the standing part of the rope up behind the rungs toward the ladder tip. 7. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.1) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will correctly prepare a dry hoseline for hoisting. Full protective clothing Rope 100 feet hose with nozzle Evaluator must initial outcome Task Steps 1 st 2nd 1. Lower an appropriate length of rope from the intended destination of the hoseline. 2. Fold the nozzle end of the hoseline backover the rest of the hose so that the overlap of 4 to 5 feet is formed. 3. Tie a clove hitch, with an overhand safety know, around the tip of the nozzle and the hose it is floded against so that they are lashed together. 4. (NFPA 1001, 5.1.1) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will correctly prepare a charged hoseline for hoisting. Lower an appropriate length of rope from the intended destination of the hoseline. 2. Tie a clove hitch, with an overhand safety knot, around the hose about one foot below the coupling and nozzle. 3. a bight through the nozzle handle and loop it over the nozzle so that the rope holds the nozzle shut while it is being hoisted. 4. 22 1153- NFPA Firefighter I Performance Task Evaluation Sheet 9-1 Objective : Clean, inspect, and maintain hand tools and equipment. (NFPA 1001, 5.5.1) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will clean, inspect, and maintain various hand tools. Every department has unique tools and equipment. This is merely a basic guide to common procedures. Tools needing maintenance will be placed on a salvage cover. Students should select one tool at a time and clean and dry each tool thoroughly before proceeding to inspection and maintenance so that the cleaning can reveal any maintenance needs. Remind students to always follow the manufacturer s instructions when using any equipment. Personal protective clothing (may include hearing and eye protection) Maintenance tools such as files, wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, etc. Salvage cover Cutting tools Maintenance supplies appropriate for the Pushing/pulling tools types of tools used, such as: steel wool, sandpaper, machine oil, lubricating oil, mild detergent, degreaser, shop towels, boiled linseed oil (wooden handles), paint, brushes, scrub pads, buckets, water. 23 1153- NFPA Firefighter I Performance Task Evaluation Checklist Objective : Clean, inspect, and maintain hand tools and equipment. Task Steps 1st 2nd Tool Cleaning 1. Wash tools with mild detergent or per manufacturer s guidelines. Rinse and wipe dry. a. Do not soak wooden handles in water because it will cause the wood to swell. Tool Maintenance 2. Inspect tool handles for cracks, splinters, or other damage. 3. Inspect tool head for tightness. 4. Inspect working surface for dullness, damage, chips, cracks, or metal fatigue. 5. Maintain wooden handles. a. Repair loose tool heads. b. Sand the handle to eliminate splinters. c. Apply a coat of boiled linseed oil to the handle to preserve it and prevent roughness and warping. d. Do not paint or varnish the handle. 6. Maintain cutting edges. a. File the cutting edges by hand. b. Sharpen blade as specified in departmental SOP. c. Replace cutting head if required. 7. Maintain unprotected metal surfaces. a. Keep free of rust. b. 24 Evaluation Sheet 9-10 Objective : Force entry through a window (glass pane). (NFPA 1001, & ) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will force entry through a window. This skill covers only typical window construction that has glass panes. Remind students to never break glass with their hands, gloved or ungloved. Also, remind students firefighters should take special precautions when breaking windows above the ground floor to prevent falling glass hazards to citizens and firefighters below. When forcing entry into a fire building, firefighters must wear SCBA. Therefore, it is recommended that students wear SCBA for this training exercise. 25 Evaluation Checklist Objective: Force entry through a window (glass pane). 1. Size up the situation. a. Try window first. Task Steps 1st 2nd b. Evaluate window construction and locking method. 2. Break the window glass. a. (Multiple-paned window) Lowest pane of glass b. (Single-paned window) At top of pane c. To avoid losing control of the tool, do not use excessive force. d. Keep hands and the tool handle above the point of impact. e. Use the tool to clean all the broken glass out of the frame once the glass has been broken. 26 1153- NFPA Firefighter I Performance Task Evaluation Sheet 9-11 Objective : Force a Lexan window. (NFPA 1001, 5.3.4) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will force a Lexan window. When forcing entry into a fire building, firefighters must wear SCBA. Therefore, it is recommended that students wear SCBA for this training exercise. Protective clothing and SCBA Carbide-tipped, medium-toothed rotary saw blade Note: Blades with teeth too small will melt the Lexan and cause the blade to bind; blades with teeth too large will slide dangerously over the window s surface. Evaluate window construction and locking method. 2. Check the saw blade. a. Carbide-tipped b. Medium-toothed c. Sharp d. Undamaged in any way 3. Ensure that the blade and hand guards are in place. 4. Start and operate the rotary saw per manufacturer s instructions. 5. Saw a hole in the window. a. Triangular shape (three cuts) large enough to reach through b. Near window lock, if applicable c. (Non-opening type) Around edges of entire pane (pane removed) 6. Turn off the saw. 7. Open the window. a. Reach through hole or opening. b. Unlock if applicable. c. 28 Evaluation Sheet 9-12 Objective : Force entry through a wood-framed wall (Type V construction) with hand tools. (NFPA 1001, & ) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will force entry through a wall made of wood. Using power tools, firefighters will cut an inspection hole, locate a wall stud, and remove enough material so that a firefighter may pass through. When removing wall studs, consideration should be given to structural integrity and utility location. When forcing entry into a fire building, firefighters must wear SCBA. Therefore, it is recommended that students wear SCBA for this training exercise. 29 Evaluation Checklist Objective : Force entry through a wood-framed wall (Type V construction) with hand tools. Task Steps 1st 2nd 1. Confirm order with officer to force entry through wall. 2. Size up the situation. a. No other existing entry points available b. Wall construction evaluated c. Locations of utilities considered 3. Confirm with Command that utilities are off. 4. Remove siding if necessary and locate stud. 5. Cut an inspection hole (small triangle). 6. Make cut utilizing inspection hole. 7. Increase size of hole to allow the passage of firefighter (stud may be removed, if necessary). 8. Utilizing the inspection hole, remove wall and insulation material with hand tool and place out of traffic area. 9. Using hand tool, push inward and remove interior wall covering. (NFPA 1001, & ) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will force entry through a wall made of masonry. Using hand tools, students will fracture masonry block(s) in a prescribed pattern and remove enough material that a firefighter may pass through. Consideration should be given to structural integrity and utility location. When forcing entry into a fire building, firefighters must wear SCBA. Therefore, it is recommended that students wear SCBA for this training exercise. 31 NFPA Firefighter I Performance Task Evaluation Checklist Objective : Force entry through a masonry wall with hand tools. Task Steps 1st 2nd 1. Confirm order with officer to force entry through wall. 2. Size up the situation. a. No other existing entry points available b. Wall construction evaluated c. Locations of utilities considered 3. Confirm with Command that utilities are off. 4. Determine one block to strike with tool and strike block until it is fractured. 5. Systematically strike and fracture individual block in a triangle pattern until desired hole size is reached. 6. Using prying and/or striking tools, begin to remove the highest block first while moving downward and side to side. 7. Remove wall material and insulation and place out of traffic area. 8. 32 Evaluation Sheet 9-14 Objective : Force entry through a metal wall with power tools. (NFPA 1001, & ) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will force entry through a wall made of metal. Using power tools, students will cut an inspection hole, locate a wall stud, and remove enough material that a firefighter may pass through. Consideration should be given to structural integrity and utility location. When forcing entry into a fire building, firefighters must wear SCBA. Therefore, it is recommended that students wear SCBA for this training exercise. 33 Evaluation Checklist Objective : Force entry through a metal wall with power tools. Task Steps 1st 2nd 1. Confirm order with officer to force entry through wall. 2. Size up the situation. a. No other existing entry points available b. Wall construction evaluated c. Locations of utilities considered 3. Confirm with Command that utilities are off. 4. Cut an inspection hole (small triangle). 5. Locate studs (wall screws indicate) and cut hole near stud. 6. Cutting a triangle, increase size of hole to allow the passage of firefighter. 7. Make the hydrant connection to steamer outlet or outlet with adapter, turning clockwise and making hand tight. 11. Open the hydrant slowly until hose is full. 12.
