Welcome to the Specialized Medical Services Respiratory training webinar series! SMS is your LTC facility single source for oxygen, medical equipment, respiratory care services and supplies nationwide. This respiratory module is for reference purposes and designed to provide a basic understanding of Oxygen Safety commonly used in Long Term Care. It is still important to consult your local respiratory professional and follow physician orders when applying respiratory treatment. At the completion of each training module, a short post test will be offered, and with successful completion, a training certificate recognizing your participation for your records.
Oxygen Safety Webinar Training Session
Training Objectives Understand the safety requirements and risks Learn how to safely handle oxygen and equipment
Safe Handling Safe Storage Primary Components of Oxygen Safety Employee / Patient Safety Proper warning signage Proper safety equipment Preventative maintenance
Role of Suppliers Know and adhere to required safety standards Provide staff training on oxygen safety standards and equipment use and handling Routinely monitor for At Risk areas
O2 Storage Room Warning Signs & Instructions Outside the Room: No Smoking No Open Flames Transferring Liquid Oxygen Inside the Room: Transferring Cryogenic Hazard Transferring Instructions Freeze Up Instructions Oxygen Delivery Information
No Smoking Signage Oxygen Storage room Resident s room Resident s door Common areas Check with local fire department
Precautions for Storage and Transferring Liquid oxygen is extremely cold Do not touch frosted areas Can result in frostbite or cryogenic burns
Safety During Transferring of Liquid Oxygen Must occur in a Non-Patient-Care area Separated by 1-hour fire resistant door Mechanically ventilated Sprinkler system Concrete or ceramic flooring Wear gloves, face shield, apron
CAUTION LIQUID OXYGEN STORAGE ROOM NO SMOKING NO OPEN FLAMES Liquid Oxygen Storage & Transferring Area DO NOT TOUCH FROSTED PORTIONS OF LIQUID OXYGEN SYSTEMS LIQUID OXYGEN IS EXTREMELY COLD WHEN TOUCHED, LIQUID OXYGEN, OR PARTS OF THE SYSTEM IN CONTACT WITH LIQUID OXYGEN, CAN CAUSE FROSTBITE OR CRYOGENIC BURNS
Oxygen Concentrator Safety Place 6-12 from curtains, furniture and vents Check intake filter daily Rinse off lint build up Check power cord for breaks or frays Never pull the concentrator by the power cord Do not plug into power strips
Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety Store and secure in tip-proof carrier Maximum storage capacity limits Use protective plastic sleeve on full cylinders Separate, clearly marked storage for Empty and Full cylinders
OXYGEN SAFETY GUIDELINES SUMMARY (LTC FACILITIES) Each LTC facility is responsible for knowing Life Safety guidelines for safe handling and storage of oxygen per Compressed Gas Association (CGA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 99 and OSHA. Consultation with qualified fire safety engineers or other qualified professionals is advisable. No Smoking Signs Compressed Gas Cylinders Liquid Oxygen 02 Concentrator 02 Storage Areas Stored/secured with tip proof carriers/holders Transferring of liquid oxygen MUST occur in non-patient care area, separated by 1-hr fire resistant door/barrier Periodic function testing records per manufacturers specs (Q 180 days) Resident s room Separate storage for Full and Empty cylinders The area is mechanically ventilated, has sprinkler system, and has ceramic or concrete flooring Preventative maintenance records provided by DME supplier (Copy kept with facility or available on request) Resident s door Storage of compressed gas cylinders is limited to 3000 cubic feet, or will require a special ventilated storeroom. The area is posted with signs that transferring is occurring, and that smoking in the immediate area is not permitted Maintenance stickers affixed to equipment Common resident-use areas Full cylinders should be affixed with protective sleeve Portable liquid carriers should be stored UP off the floor when not in use, preferably HUNG ON A HOOK or HOLDER. Do not plug into power strip No combustible material stored in 02 room such as paper and cardboard Cryogenic safety gear (face shield, gloves, apron) in trans-filling room for staff to use when filling portable units
