The MSA 261 meter is being phased out because of its old technology and cost for repair. A list of acceptable meters have been added to the procedure. Feb 03 The revision addresses the addition and deletions on the approved list for the Geismar site. It also advises that the calibration can be extended out to once per quarter with the manufacturer s approval. The unit instrument technicians can calibrate the instruments if proper training and documentation are kept. If a unit has unique needs that one of the instruments cannot provide site safety must be consulted before purchase. Because of the significant amount of revisions made, the users should review the entire procedure. 08/08 Reformatted majority of sections. 2 Procedure No.: GSS09 Page: 2 of 5 1. PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to establish recommendations for use and inspection of portable multi-gas monitoring equipment. 2. DEFINITIONS 2.1 Equipment Owner The unit or department that operates or is responsible for the daily operation of the process, area or facility where work is being conducted. The terms Equipment Owner and Owning Department are used synonymously for the purpose of this procedure. 2.2 Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) 3. SCOPE The minimum concentration of vapor to air below which propagations of a flame will not occur in the presence of an ignition source. Combustible gas meters (or LEL Meters) measure the % concentration of vapor to air mixtures from 0 to 100 % of the LEL This applies to all portable multi-gas monitoring equipment used on the Geismar Site. This standard applies to all new purchases and replacement purchases of portable multi-gas monitoring equipment. 4. PROCEDURE 4.1. Appendix A identifies instruments currently approved for purchase and use at the Geismar site. Equipment Owners desiring to purchase an instrument, which is not on the approved list, must get approval from the Safety/Industrial Hygiene Team Leader or designee Monitoring for Confined Space and Hot Work requires an instrument that provides continuous monitoring for oxygen and flammable gases/vapors. Additional chemical-specific sensors may be purchased when monitoring is needed for specific toxic gases, such as for CO, formaldehyde, phosgene, etc.

PROCEDURE cont d All portable multi-gas monitoring equipment shall be used, stored, calibrated and recharged in accordance with the manufacturer s recommendation At a minimum, each Equipment Owner must have the following preventative maintenance program in place: Daily checks of the following: A. A functional (i.e., bump ) test that includes brief exposure of the monitoring equipment to a known concentration of gas(es) for the purpose of verifying correct sensor and alarm operation. These checks must be documented. B. Battery check. C. Inspection for obvious defects such as a cracked case or dry rotted hoses Periodic calibrations A. Equipment is to be calibrated according to the manufacturer s recommendation not exceeding once per quarter. If the manufacturer does not provide specific guidance on calibration then it should be performed no less than once per month. Calibration stickers should reflect the date due for the next calibration inspection. Calibrations must be documented Other: A. Replace filters in accordance to manufacturer s recommendation; B. Verify designated flow rates, as applicable; C. Check ballast lamp in accordance to manufacturer s recommendation, as applicable; and D. Check structural integrity, loose wiring, modifications and substitutes, as applicable, per manufacturer s recommendation This preventive maintenance program may be performed by a Purchasingapproved vendor, by a qualified Instrument Technician, or by a person who has been trained and qualified to perform such tasks. 4.5 These instruments are not approved for use in oxygen-enriched atmospheres.

RESPONSIBILITIES Site Safety/IH must approve the make and model of the instrument; Documentation of calibration and daily bump testing must be supplied before the meters are allowed on site; and The instruments must be inspected to ensure a molecular filter, which can inhibit the ability of the meter to detect flammable atmospheres, is not being used. 5.1 Site Safety/IH is responsible for the following: Approving any instrumentation, not listed in Appendix A, prior to purchase Periodically evaluating new technology that is commercially available. 5.2 The Equipment Owner is responsible for the proper, daily functional checks, and maintenance of the instrument according to the manufacturer s instructions.
