OBJECTS The objectves of the tranng were: (a) To tran all members of the dvng party n operatons at deep depths. h ' s PROCEDURE (b) To evaluate surface decompresson procedures. (c) To test modfed dvng gear. (d) To prove newly computed decomoresson schedules. (e) To promote confdence n helum-oxygen dvng. After equpment was tested and all dvers drlled n ventlatng, crculatng and gong on open crcut n shallow water alongsde the dock, a total of 67 dves, summarzed below, between 272 and 485 feet were made. Unsuccessfully attempted false seat exercses. Strong currents. Standard procedure wth surface decompresson was followed. The average tme from 50 feet n the water to 50 feet n the recompresson chamber was 3 1/2 mnutes, wth the dver beng fully undressed on deck. ml A 450 foot partal pressure decompresson schedule, computed n the same manner as are the publshed schedules, was used for the frst tme followng the dves to 485 feet. The 60 foot stoo, however, was computed for He02 mxtures, and oxygen was gven at 50 and 40 feet. t s planned to change all 60 foot stops to He02 wth the vew of reducng the ncdence of oxygen posonng. The followng lsted modfcatons and addtons were made to standard dvng gear: 1. The CHANTCLEER provded a second dver's telephone speaker at the helum manfold. Ths permtted the dvng offcer and the personnel operatng the manfold to hear all talk from the dver and to lsten for varatons n the sound of the gas flowng through the hgh pressure jet n the dver's helmet. 2. The dver's ar hose and lfe lne were lengthened to 800 feet for all dves below 300 feet. 3. Oxygen hose wth the open end termnatng at the dver's helmet was made jp wth the lfe lne and ar hose. The end on deck was connected to a footage gauge and to an ar supply. By blowng ar through the hose untl t was clear of water and securng the ar, the depth of the dver can be read from the gauge. Ths method was also used to take soundngs when the vessel was centered n her moor. The fathometer, readng only n fathoms, was about 52 feet lght at depths of 400 feet. As varatons n the depth of a dver of as lttle as one foot are readly shown, ths method s consdered more accurate and relable than others n oresent use. y;* '.^..vylv.&mk^vr,**!: -TT-T
7 ^^^ ^^'^ ^mfww^1^^^' ^^^^-^ r^^r-ww^^^^^^^^^ n USS FLORKAN, wth the helum manfolds carred n the after hold, a second footage gauge s nstalled at the ma n fold. 4. The weght of the CHANTCLEER dvng shoes were ncreased to 38 oounds each. Ths addtonal weght made the dver heaver and more stable whle on the bottom wthout alterng hs balance or the normal nflaton of hs sut. The bottom was smooth and hard. m 5. A duct, open only at the dscharge end and termnatng close to the faceplate, was nstalled from the dscharge of the canster. Ths provdes good crculaton and mxng of gas n the helmet. n case of casualty, any mosture wll be drected to the lower part of the front of the helmet where t wll drp or flow nto the bb. t prevents any mxture of water an'! shell natron from beng sprayed over the dver's head and fatd whle he s n an uprght poston. 6. A screw-pn shackle large enough to take the dver's lfe lne and ar hose was welded, open end up, to the dvng stage, about 5 1/2 feet above the platform. Just before leavng the l?.st water stop, the dver shackled n hs lfe lne and ar hose. Thus the tenders had the dver under control at all tmes and could prevent hs fallng off the stage when hs breastplate was above the level of the deck. 7. A Paulng oxygen meter was used to test all bottles of helum-oxygen mxtures. As a check, about percent of the bottles also were tested wth the Haldane-Henderson apparatus. Almost nstantaneous readngs of oxygen content are gven. Only one quckly made correcton based upon the varaton of barometrc pressure from standard s requred. t s expected that a portable, possbly battery operated model, accurate to wthn one-half of one oercent, wll be avalable for test and evaluatons wthn a few months. 8. Bendx type oxygen regulators were, n the man, used n the recömpresson chambers. By seoarate corresoondence (EDU report Mo. 1 of Bureau of Shps Research Project No. 1152/47 enttled "Tests and Evaluaton of Varous Types of Oxygen Breathng Equpment for Use n the Recömpresson Chamber" of November 1948) t has been recommended that Pendx type regulators be furnshed as the type currently "n use requres replacement. 9. When shftng to oxygen wth the 800 foot lfe lne and ar hose n use, 100 pounds over bottom pressure was necessary to provde an adequate volume of gas durng ventlaton. 8 ^^S^ns^.?^?»TO^^ mm-m^mmmmmm^ The pressure was reduced to 50 oounds over bottom pressure when the dver went to closed crcut. DSCUSSON 10. The exhaust lnes from the recompresson chambers led to a conmon dscharge lne termnatng n the superstructure above the boat deck. Ths arrangement prevented hgh concentratons of oxygen from beng dscharged nto the recompresson chamber comoartment but, at the same tme, prevended ndependent smultaneous ventng of the chambers unless they were at the same pressure. A 'Tee" connecton dschargng to the chamber compartment and three valves were nstalled to provde flexblty. 11. At depths of less than 100 feet, the 100 pounds over bottom pressure of the dver's helum-oxygen supply causes nosy jet operaton. To mprove voce communcaton, 50 pounds over bottom pressure was used untl the dver reached about 60 feet. The pressure then was bult up gradually to the requred 100 pounds over bottom pressure by the tme the dver reached about 125 feet. Durng ascent, the pressure was correspondngly reduced. ""t? C0MCLUS0NS The helum-oxygen helmets and breastplates of the CHANTCLEER were of the old type converted from ar helmets manufactured n They were 15 nounds lghter than the standard tyoe and were more comfortable as the dver's head was centered fore and aft n the helmet. Wearng the new types the dver s heavy aft and has a tendency to fall backwards. The depth gauges on the CHANTCLEERS recompresson chambers were calbrated n pounds. As decompresson tables and treatment tables for casson dsease and ar embolsm are expressed n feet of salt water, footage gauges are more convenent. % 1. That the tranng was valuable, especally to personnel of ths actvty. 2. That surface decompresson orocedures as used proved satsfactory for all dves made. 3. That a larger ventur dscharge nozzle and larger hgh pressure nozzle used wth gas at 50 pounds over bottom pressure gave satsfactory performance. Detaled tests are n progress at ths actvty. 4. That the personnel nvolved n ths tranng have confdence n dvng wth helum-oxygen mxtures. 7. That current s a major obstacle to any planned dvng operatons. 8. That 40 pound dvng shoes are useful on a hard bottom. 9. That personnel from the Expermental Dvng Unt be assgned temporary addtonal duty aboard a submarne rescue vessel at regular ntervals for the purposes of: (a) Assstng n fleet dvng tranng. (b) Usng at sea, orocedures and materal developed ashore. (c) Tranng. That personnel from the Expermental Dvng Unt, upon completon of shore duty, normally be assgned to submarne rescue vessels. RECOMMENDATONS 1. That the method of determnng depth by ar pressure be used, and that necessary pressure gauges calbrated n feet of salt water be furnshed. 2. That ducts as descrbed above be nstalled n all helumoxygen dvng helmets. 3. That recompresson chamber exhaust lnes be modfed, when necessary, for ndependent ventng. 4. That recompresson chamber depth gauges be calbrated to ndcate depth n feet of salt water rather than n pounds of ar oressure. 5. That copes of ths report Le furnshed all submarne rescue vessels and other actvtes nterested n helum-oxygen dvng wth a request for comment. 5.
