1 Introduction 1.1 Overview The ASE Solvent Controller is an optional accessory for use with two Dionex instruments: the ASE 200 Accelerated Solvent Extractor and the ASE 300 Accelerated Solvent Extractor. The Solvent Controller enhances the versatility of the Solvent Extractors by enabling the user to: Change solvents between extractions in order to extract a sample with a different solvent, or to extract each of the remaining samples on the carousel with a solvent other than the one used for the previous sample. Select from up to four different solvent reservoirs for extractions. Mix two, three, or four solvents. Operation of the Solvent Controller can be programmed from either the Solvent Extractor keypad or from AutoASE software. For more information, refer to these manuals: ASE 200 Accelerated Solvent Extractor Operator s Manual (Document No ) ASE 300 Accelerated Solvent Extractor Operator s Manual (Document No ) AutoASE Software User s Guide (Document No ) ASE 200 Configuration Your ASE 200 may not be ready for immediate operation with the Solvent Controller. Review the items below to see whether the instrument requires modification. An ASE 200 shipped before September 1995 may contain a double-head pump. If so, the pump must be reconfigured as a single-head pump before operation with the Solvent Controller. Doc /
ASE Solvent Controller Contact Dionex for assistance; only Dionex personnel can reconfigure the pump. An ASE 200 shipped before April 1997 does not contain the electronics required for operation with the Solvent Controller. Order Solvent Controller P/N , which includes two electronics cards for installation in the ASE 200. Chapter 3 of this manual explains how to install the cards. An ASE 200 shipped in April 1997 or later does not require any modifications and is ready for immediate operation with the Solvent Controller. Order Solvent Controller P/N ASE 300 Configuration The ASE 300 is ready for immediate operation with the Solvent Controller. Order Solvent Controller P/N About This Manual Typeface Conventions Bold type indicates a front panel button, the name of a display, or a label on a component. For example: Press Enter to begin running the method. Open the METHOD screen. Set the injection valve knob to INJECT Safety Messages and Notes The ASE Solvent Controller meets European, EMC, and safety requirements per Council Directives 73/23/EEC and 89/336/EEC, EN :1993 (safety), EN :1992 (susceptibility), and EN 55011:1991 (emissions). The CE and GS safety label attests to compliance with these standards. The Solvent Controller emits no more than 60 db at the A WEIGHING setting. 1-2 Doc /2000
About This Manual To ensure operator safety, do not use the Solvent Controller for any applications other than those described in this manual. If there is a question regarding appropriate usage, contact Dionex before proceeding. This manual contains warnings and precautionary statements that, when properly followed, can prevent personal injury and/or damage to the Solvent Controller. Safety messages appear in bold type and are accompanied by icons. Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. 9 2 Description 2.1 Operating Features The front panel Ready LED lights when the Solvent Controller is connected to an ASE 200 or ASE 300 Accelerated Solvent Extractor that is powered up. The front panel A, B, C, and D LEDs light during operation to indicate which solvent is currently being selected. The caddie holds up to four 1-liter (P/N ) or 2-liter (P/N ) glass reservoirs with plastic shatterproof coating. When operating the Solvent Controller, use only coated reservoirs. To prevent operator injury, pressure in reservoirs must not exceed 0.07 MPa (10 psi). Reservoir Caddie Tower Solvent Line Gas Line Figure 2-1. ASE Solvent Controller Doc /
ASE Solvent Controller The standard reservoir cap assembly (P/N ) contains a polypropylene stopper. Cap assemblies with PEEK and Teflon stoppers are also available. Contact Dionex to order an IR Kit (containing one cap assembly) in the preferred material: PEEK IR Kit (P/N ) Teflon IR Kit (P/N ) The gas and solvent lines exiting the right side of the Solvent Controller are connected to fittings in the Solvent Extractor solvent compartment. The electrical control cable exiting the rear of the Solvent Controller is connected to the Solvent Extractor electronics. Liquid spills exit via a drain line connected to the rear of the Solvent Controller. 2.2 System Overview The Solvent Controller operates in conjunction with the ASE 200 or ASE 300 Accelerated Solvent Extractor to automatically change and/or mix solvents between extractions. (Solvent composition cannot be changed during an extraction.) Each extract is collected in a separate collection vial or bottle. The Solvent Controller can supply four different solvents. Specify the solvent types and percentages on the Solvent Extractor METHOD EDITOR screen, or in the Method dialog box in AutoASE software. The Solvent Controller reservoirs are pressurized up to 0.07 MPa (10 psi), via the Solvent Extractor, to facilitate solvent delivery to the Solvent Extractor pumping system. The delivery accuracy is ±2% absolute for 5% to 20% mixtures and 10% relative for mixtures >20%. (An automatic shutoff valve in the connector that supplies gas to the reservoir cap prevents gas leaks when a reservoir is not connected.) 2-2 Doc /2000
2 Description The system automatically rinses at the following times: At the start of a method or schedule, Between methods, if there is a change in the solvent or in the ratio of solvents for an extraction, or When the post-rinse solvent is not the solvent selected for the next extraction. The rinse volume (9 ml) is collected in a rinse vial or bottle. The rinse is performed with the solvent specified on the Solvent Extractor SCHEDULE EDITOR screen or in the AutoASE Schedule dialog box. When the post-rinse uses the same solvent as the previous run, the rinse volume is automatically 1 ml for the ASE 200 and 2 ml for the ASE 300. When AutoASE controls the system, a rinse volume of 1 to 5 ml can be selected. The schedule may also specify additional rinses; for example, a rinse with water, followed by a rinse with the solvent to be used for the next series of extractions. Pressing the Rinse button on the Solvent Extractor keypad starts a manual rinse (4 ml for the ASE 200; 5 ml for the ASE 300) using the solvent configuration in either the loaded method or in the first method of the loaded schedule. If no method or schedule is loaded, the system rinses with 100% of solvent A. Doc /

3 Installation and Operation 3.1 Installation Electronics Connections For an April 1997 (or newer) ASE 200 or for an ASE Place the ASE Solvent Controller to the left of the ASE 200 or ASE 300 Accelerated Solvent Extractor. 2. Make sure the main power to the Solvent Extractor is turned off. Open the upper front door, exposing the card cage. 3. Route the electrical control cable from the rear of the Solvent Controller through the service chase on the Solvent Extractor rear panel and into the card cage. Plug the cable into the connector on the Solvent Controller control card. For a pre-april 1997 ASE Make sure the main power to the ASE 200 Accelerated Solvent Extractor is turned off. Open the upper front door, exposing the card cage. 2. Put on an ESD wrist strap and ground it to the ASE 200 chassis. Remove the blank card installed in slot 1 of the card cage and replace it with the ASE Solvent Controller control card (P/N ). NOTE Store the blank card in a plastic bag in a safe location. If the control card is ever removed from the ASE 200, you must reinstall the blank card to complete the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Doc /
ASE Solvent Controller 3. Place the Solvent Controller to the left of the ASE Route the electrical control cable from the rear of the Solvent Controller through the service chase on the ASE 200 rear panel and into the card cage. Plug the cable into the connector on the Solvent Controller control card. 5. Install an upgraded CPU card (P/N ) in slot 5 of the card cage. Dispose of the original CPU card Solvent Reservoir Connections NOTE Fill the reservoirs only when the Solvent Extractor is idle; the reservoirs are pressurized during rinse cycles and sample extractions. 1. Fill the Solvent Controller reservoir with a prepared solvent. (See the ASE 200 or ASE 300 manual for guidelines for solvent selection and preparation.) 2. Insert the outlet line extending from the underside of the reservoir cap assembly into the reservoir. To prevent air from being drawn through the line, make sure that the in-line filter rests on the bottom of the reservoir. 3. Hand-tighten the cap securely over the stopper. 4. Place the reservoir in the solvent caddie. Screw the fitting on the outlet line into the corresponding metal connector on the tower of the caddie (see Figure 2-1). 5. Push the quick-disconnect fitting on the gas inlet line into the corresponding connector on the tower. (To disconnect the line, push inward on the small latch at the side of the connector and pull out the fitting.) 6. Repeat Steps 1-5 for additional reservoirs. 3-2 Doc /2000
3 Installation and Operation After assembling the reservoirs, follow the procedure in either Step 7 or Step 8 (below) to connect the solvent and gas lines from the Solvent Controller to the Solvent Extractor. The procedures vary slightly because older Solvent Extractors do not have service chases for these connections. 7. For an ASE 200 shipped in January 1997 or later, or for any ASE 300: a. Pull off the small round service chase covers on the left side of the Solvent Extractor enclosure (there are covers on both the exterior and interior walls). Discard the covers. b. Route the solvent outlet line from the Solvent Controller (see Figure 2-1) through the service chases and into the solvent compartment of the Solvent Extractor. Screw the end of the line into the connector labeled SOLVENT. c. Route the Solvent Controller gas inlet line (see Figure 2-1) through the service chases and into the solvent compartment of the Solvent Extractor. Push the quick-disconnect fitting into the connector labeled GAS. 8. For an ASE 200 shipped before January 1997: a. Route the solvent outlet line from the Solvent Controller (see Figure 2-1) under the door of the ASE 200 solvent compartment and screw it into the connector labeled SOLVENT. b. Route the Solvent Controller gas inlet line (see Figure 2-1) under the door of the ASE 200 solvent compartment and push the quick-disconnect fitting into the connector labeled GAS. NOTE Be careful not to crimp the gas or solvent lines in the hinge of the solvent compartment door. Doc /
ASE Solvent Controller Drain Line Installation Place the end of the drain line in a waste container positioned below the level of the Solvent Controller. This maintains a positive siphon during operation, should a solvent reservoir or connection develop a leak. 3.2 Operation Solvent Extractor Control 1. Press Menu on the ASE 200 or ASE 300 Accelerated Solvent Extractor keypad to display the MENU OF SCREENS, and then press 5 to display the MODULE SETUP screen. Make sure the MODE field is set to LOCAL, and then move the cursor to the SOLVENT SELECT field and select YES. NOTE Before operating the Solvent Extractor without the Solvent Controller, reset SOLVENT SELECT to NO. This ensures adequate pressurization of the reservoir in the solvent compartment and prevents solvent leakage from the cell input connection. 2. Press Menu to display the MENU OF SCREENS, and then press 3 to display the METHOD EDITOR. Create and edit methods as usual, specifying the solvent types and percentages on the METHOD EDITOR screen. Make sure the total percentage for all solvents entered equals 100%. 3-4 Doc /2000
