5 R Bomb Threat 1. If you see a suspicious object or potetial bomb o campus, DO NOT TOUCH THE OBJECT. Clear the area ad immediately call I the area of the cocer, do ot ope ay drawers or cabiets. Do ot use ay cell phoes or two-way radios. Do ot tur o or off ay electrical devices, light switches, radios or other kids of electroic devices. 3. All faculty, staff, ad studets will be evacuated from buildig(s) ad should proceed to the desigated safe area(s) for a head cout. Keep walkways clear for emergecy vehicles ad persoel. 4. A ivestigatio will be coducted ad o oe will be allowed to re-eter a buildig util the police have determied it to be safe. IF YOU RECEIVE A BOMB THREAT OVER THE TELEPHONE: Be calm ad courteous. Liste ad do ot iterrupt the caller. Keep the caller o the phoe as log as possible ad do ot hag up. Write dow the caller ID umber ad the exact time of the call. If a studet is aswerig the phoes, have a staff member take the call if possible. Sigal someoe to call police ad alert the buildig admiistrator or desigee. Write dow everythig the caller says. The reasos for this could be fire alarms, bomb threats, atural gas leaks, etc. Whe you are otified to evacuate, follow these procedures: 1. Aytime a evacuatio order is issued, either by alarm or verbally, evacuate immediately. 2. If possible, close all widows ad doors ad walk to the earest exit (see posted evacuatio maps). If the alarm stops soudig, cotiue evacuatio ad war others who may attempt to eter the buildig. 3. Assist disabled persos or visitors to leave the buildig. 4. Do ot use elevators. 5. Proceed 100 feet away from buildig to the desigated meetig or a Desigated Assembly Area. Keep streets ad sidewalks ope for emergecy persoel. Do ot retur to the buildig util directed to do so. 17 GENERAL PROCEDURES Fire Activate the alarm by pullig the fire alarm ad/or call 911. Oly properly traied employees should attempt to extiguish a fire. Walk quickly i a orderly fashio to the earest buildig exit ad promptly vacate the facility. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS. USE THE STAIRS. Try to assist ayoe who is disabled or ijured to evacuate. To reduce fire or smoke damage, close all doors ad widows whe leavig the room ad the hallways if you have time. Report ay hazardous coditios to the Reo Fire Departmet or call 911 dispatcher. Do ot re-eter the buildig util istructed to do so by emergecy respoders. IF YOU ARE TRAPPED IN A BUILDING DURING A FIRE: Stay close to the floor where the air is less toxic. Shout at regular itervals to alert emergecy crews of your locatio. If smoke is eterig the room through cracks i the door, stuff wet clothig i the cracks to slow the flow. If your clothes catch fire, drop to the floor ad roll to smother the fire, or smother the fire with a blaket, rug, or heavy coat. AFTER A FIRE: Residual dagers may exist. 21 7 Flood & Thuderstorm FLOOD Serious water damage ca occur from a umber of sources such as broke pipes, clogged drais ad broke skylights or widows. If a water leak occurs: Remai calm. Call Facilities Services: (775) Advise the dispatcher of exact locatio ad severity of the leak. Notify your supervisor of the extet ad locatio of the leak. If there are electrical appliaces or electrical outlets ear the leak, use extreme cautio. If there is ay possible dager, evacuate the area. (See buildig evacuatio page 7) If you kow the source of the water ad are cofidet of your ability to stop it (i.e. uclog the drai, tur off water, etc.) do so cautiously. 22 THUNDERSTORM 7 Thuderstorms are dagerous. Some thuderstorms ca be see approachig while others hit without warig. It is importat to lear ad recogize dager sigs ad pla ahead. While with or ear the perso, remai calm ad cooperate. Be sure to ot make sudde movemets. Whe it is safe to do so, call 911, ad give as much iformatio as possible uder the circumstace, especially your ame ad locatio (departmet, buildig ad room umber). If safe to do so, alert others that a emergecy or dagerous situatio is preset or immiet ad that everyoe should quietly leave the area. Stay calm. Attempt to distace yourself from the idividual. Be empathetic ad show your cocer. Try to sit dow with the perso, as sittig is a less aggressive posture tha stadig or movig aroud. Be helpful. Schedule a appoitmet for a later time, take otes. Provide positive feedback such as, We ca get this straighteed out, or I m glad you re tellig me how you feel about this. Keep a safe distace stay out of arm s reach. Miimize eye cotact. 31 WORKPLACE/CLASSROOM VIOLENCE If you see someoe eter a campus buildig or office with a firearm or threateig weapo, or actig i a meacig or violet maer, do the followig: 1. Call 911 immediately 2. If you kow you are goig to be studyig ad/or workig late o campus, pla ahead as to how you will get home safely. 2. Take advatage of safe rides from Campus Escort Service ( ) ad Uiversity Police ( COPS). 3. Do t distract yourself with music players or cell phoes while walkig at ight. 4. Walk i groups or pairs. Meet frieds at locatios from which the two of you ca walk safely (i.e., well-lighted parkig lots or garages). 5. If you see a suspicious perso or situatio, call 911 or Uiversity Police ( COPS). 6. Remember to lock doors ad widows. 7. Choose ope, well-lit, ad well-traveled areas to walk. 8. If you are carryig a purse, hold it firm, close to your body. Purse satchers prefer to grab from behid. 9. If you work late, arrage to leave at the same time as a co-worker. 10. Park as close as possible to your destiatio. Over 20 specially traied studets serve as Campus Escort Officers. These officers are traied i self-defese, professioal drivig ad basic CPR/First Aid care. 41 9 Persoal Ijury FOR AN ILLNESS OR INJURY REQUIRING URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION: Immediately call 911. If traied, give appropriate first aid util emergecy respoders arrive. DO NOT move the victim uless absolutely ecessary. REPORTING INJURIES: STUDENTS Studets ijured o campus should complete a icidet report form. Mail Stop FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENT EMPLOYEES Faculty, staff, ad studet employees should report ijuries by completig a C-1 form ad submittig it to Workers Compesatio. 44 9 KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS OF A HEART ATTACK OR STROKE: Kowig the warig sigs of a heart attack ad stroke ca reduce the loss of precious time. The warig sigs of a heart attack are: Ucomfortable pressure, fulless or squeezig pai i the chest, lastig more tha a few miutes Pai spreadig to shoulders, eck, arms or jaw Light-headedess, faitig, sweatig, ausea or shortess of breath Sudde chest pai or pressure (also called agia) that worses. This may be felt as discomfort, heaviess or pai. May also be felt i the back, jaw, throat, arm or below the breastboe. Ask the perso if they are allergic to aspiri. If they are ot allergic, have them chew a aspiri as soo after callig 911 as possible. If the perso stops breathig, start mouth-to-mouth resuscitatio. Tell the 911 operator that this has happeed. If the pulse ad breathig stop, begi CPR. Cotiue util help arrives. Mouth-to-Mouth Resuscitatio Place ucoscious victim o side ad remove ay foreig matter from mouth with figer. Roll victim oto back. Tilt victim s head back to ope airway. Check for breathig. 49 UTILITY FAILURE T Power Outage Examples of utility failures are loss of electricity, heatig, vetilatio, or air coditioig. Other failures are problems with atural gas or plumbig, icludig water leaks, floodig, or lack of water pressure. Notify Facilities Services: (775) If telephoes are ot operatig properly, sed a messeger to the Facilities Services. If evacuatio is required, follow evacuatio procedures (See page 7) ad use the stairway. I a laboratory, vetilatio hoods do ot work durig a power outage ad vapors may reach hazardous cocetratios. Persoel should secure experimets or activities that preset a dager whe the power is off, or if it is restored uexpectedly. ELEVATOR FAILURE If you are iside a elevator durig a elevator failure: Remai calm; elevators have mechaical brakes that operate i all situatios.
