1 2017 Volunteer Week - Course Descriptions 40 Hour Course - S130/S190/L180 Introduction to Wildland Firefighting S190 This course provides instruction in the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. S-190 is typically taught in conjunction with or prior to Firefighter Training, S-130. The material is divided into three online modules (1 to 3 hours each). S130 This course addresses the foundational skills universal to all wildland firefighters. The material is divided into 12 online modules (1 to 3 hours each) and a mandatory, instructor-led field day exercise (Module 13). Each online module explains the concepts and skills that will be performed and evaluated on the field day exercise. Module 12 contains optional knowledge areas (pump operations, map and compass, fire investigation and cultural resources) that are very useful concepts, but not required due to time constraints. L180 This course addresses human performance content that relates to the individual, including situation awareness, communication, decision making, risk management, and teamwork skills. 24 Hour Course - ICS 300: Intermediate Incident Management System By the end of this course, the student should be able to explain how major incidents pose special management challenges; describe the circumstances in which an Area Command is established; describe the circumstances in which multiagency coordination systems are established. The course is designed for senior personnel who are expected to perform in a management capacity in an Area Command or multiagency coordination system. The course provides overall incident management skills. IMPORTANT: You must successfully complete prerequisite courses, Incident Command System (ICS)- 100 and ICS-200 or equivalent, prior to being accepted for this course. 2 16 Hour Courses - Firefighter 1 Live Burn - Live Fire Evolutions Students must meet the prerequisites for live fire training per NFPA During this event, students will participate in live burn evolutions. There will two burns on Friday (8 hrs.) and two different burns on Saturday (8 hrs.) The evolutions will consist of an exterior Class `A fire, vehicle fire, grade room & content fire and below grade room & content fire. Upon completion of the four live burns, the Firefighter I candidate will have completed four of the six live burns required for Firefighter I certification. NOTE: Students must present written documentation of completion of the following components of Firefighter I: Safety, Fire Behavior, Water Supply, PPC, SCBA, Communications, Ladders, Ventilation, and Hose and Appliance Documentation should be from a certified instructor attesting that the student has met knowledge components and had hands on training. Full turnout gear is required. A limited number of SCBA are available for use through the college. Students MUST bring their Task Books. - Firefighter Part I Task Book Skills Sign Off The class is organized to include Firefighter I Skills required for Task Book sign-off in the following areas: PPE/SCBA, ropes and knots, forcible entry, ladder evolutions, hose loads and evolutions, portable fire extinguishers, overhaul, live fire training, fire-stream operations, and ventilation. NOTE: Students must present written documentation of completion of the following components of Firefighter I: Safety, Fire Behavior, Water Supply, PPC, SCBA, Communications, Ladders, Ventilation, and Hose and Appliances. Documentation should be from a certified instructor attesting that the student has met knowledge components and had hands on training. Full turnout gear is required. A limited number of SCBA are available for use through the college. Students MUST bring their Task Books.

3 4 Hour Courses - Active Shooter Active shooter attacks are dynamic incidents that vary greatly from one attack to another. Preparing and responding to an active shooter incident can pose a unique set of challenges to the first responder. If you fall into the category of a first responder (Fire, EMS, or Police), your actions and abilities to provide needed assistance will be tested to the limits of your training and knowledge of an active shooter situation. This training will assist the first responder with information that is related to the: Profile of an active shooter How to react if found in an active shooter situation How to respond when law enforcement arrives Guidelines on how to achieve the responder s duties during an active shooter What to do after the shooting stops Follow-up responsibilities of the first responder - Extrication for Volunteers Formalization with tools and safety used in extrication. This class will consist of door and roof removal, different ways for dash displacement, and glass removal. This class will also go over several ways to stabilize vehicles on their side, on the roof and also on all four wheels. Hands on practical. Full turnout gear is required Firefighter Rehab This is a 4-hour course that will review NFPA Students will setup and function as an actual rehab during the Engine Company Operations course. Students will review when vital signs should be taken, guidelines for operating a rehab including rehydration and food intake. Cooling and making a decision when a firefighter should not return to operations will be discussed. Information comes from LFTI and FEMA's rehab SOG and instructors will be able to apply this information in their firefighter training.

4 4 Hour Courses (continued) - Firefighting with Limited Resources Firefighting with limited resources will involve how to handle current fire situations and assessments using a risk, benefit, and needs assessment. The creation of a mental checklist for the company officer, or volunteer officer, of the first arriving apparatus on scene of a fire. To better equip the fire officer with limited resource to achieve success on today s fire ground. - Florida Firefighter Assistance Grant Program The Firefighter Assistance Grant Program has been established to improve the emergency response capability of volunteer fire departments and combination fire departments. Through this program, The Bureau of Fire Standards and Training, Division of the State Fire Marshal shall provide financial assistance to improve firefighter safety and enable such fire departments to provide firefighting, emergency medical, and rescue services to their communities. Topics discussed will be information about this grant, who is eligible, stepping through the grant application process, and other grant opportunities. Helicopter and Landing Zone Operations Helicopter landing zone operations, will teach basic landing zone techniques establishments setups lighting and operations. Basic Marshall hand signals, landing zone lights setups, and communications. Safety area and air ship safety issues and Rotor awareness. - Hydraulics for Volunteers Fire hydraulics for volunteers, will be course designed to assist the volunteer apparatus operator, pump operator/ driver engineer. This program will be designed for basic friction loss, hose diameter gallons per minute, water supply estimations and applications. This program will involve pulling hand lines, laying supply lines, establishing large diameter hose operations, and exposure lines. This course will give the apparatus operator the confidence and ability to adequately, and properly supply hose-lines operations on the fire ground. This course will involve basic hydraulics, nozzle flow, gallons per minute, and friction loss applications.

5 4 Hour Courses (continued) Live Scenario This will be an opportunity for Firefighters to practice some of their skills they have learned from the weekend classes and this week in a controlled learning environment. Current certified firefighter I and II may participate in this exercise. Firefighter ID numbers from the FCDICE system will be required. Full turnout gear is required. A limited number of SCBA are available for use through the college. - RIT for Volunteers Rapid intervention team operations for volunteers, is 2 out a RIT team? This course will give the volunteer firefighter practical applications of drags pulls and mechanical advantages to assist in removing a down firefighter or disoriented firefighter from a hazardous condition. This course will involve 2 to 1 mechanical advantages, drags, pulls and application of back up air supply (SCBA). - Rural Water Supply Rural water supply will involve drafting, tender operations, water tank operations, tender shuttles, and water supply estimations, tender nursing operations, and what works best for the given situations. - Street Smart Forcible Entry Examines the most current application and tools. Tactical capabilities and hands on practice will be part of this course.

6 4 Hour Courses (continued) - Tactics for Volunteer Agencies Tactics for volunteer agencies is an action packed active tactical operation course. Volunteer tactics of staffing power, limited resources, firefighting objectives, and go, and no go situations are the focus of this class. This tactics program will involve windshield size up, the 360 size up of the building or situation, application of two in and two out, hose line applications, nozzle applications, gallons per minute fire flow, and expected outcomes. - Water on the Fire The course will give the volunteer fire company practical application of hose line selection, gallons per minute, nozzle selection, establishing hose lines, attack lines, exposure lines, and supply lines. Basic selection of nozzle and attack line combination to effectively engage in firefighting.
