5 Section 1 INTRODUCTION IMPORTANT INFORMATION It is very important to all of us at Sherman & Reilly that every machine is operated in a safe manner. We have taken every precaution to guard against the possibility of an accident. To properly, safely operate this machine, it is necessary and important that operators and service people read and understand the information in this and the engine manufacturer s manual. ANYONE working around the machine should read the safety precautions in the manuals. Be aware each warning and precaution is to help protect against needless injury. Taking unnecessary risks and ignoring warnings is the primary cause of personal injury and fatal accidents in the work place. If you have any questions regarding operation or safety of a procedure or situation, contact the Sherman & Reilly Customer Service Manager at The Sherman & Reilly CP-50 Puller is a gas engine drill-powered puler, designed for pulling residential or light commercial runs. The unit has a 500 pound pulling force. The user friendly light weight design eliminates the necessity of pulling cable by hand. The CP-50 is the only portable underground puller designed exclusively for use in the utility industry. This manual was prepared to help the operator use and service the machine is a safe manner. Responsibility for safety during operation and service rests with the person(s) doing the work. Be alert. Observe and practice all safety measures, including OSHA requirements and ANSI standards, to help prevent the possibility of an accident. This manual is of no value if the operator does not read and understand the instructions and precautions (before starting and trying to operate the machine). The operator must be aware of the machine s capacities and limitations. It is the operator s responsibility to watch for situations and conditions which could affect the normal performance of the machine and safety in the work area. Publication of this manual and the safety precautions in it does not in any way represent an all inclusive list. It is the operator s responsibility to make sure the machine is operated in accordance with all state and local safety requirements and codes, including all applicable OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) regulations. Should a problem or unsafe condition arise, shut the machine down using the normal shutdown procedure. In the event of an emergency, use the emergency stop procedure. Notify the proper authority or follow your employer s prescribed procedure for an emergency situation. Sherman & Reilly strongly recommends that only persons literate and understanding the English language be considered as operators or service personnel for the CP-50 Puller. 1.1

7 Section 2 SAFETY WARNING TERMS Signal words in this manual call the operator s attention to safety concerns. DANGER The word DANGER indicates the information relates to a specific immediate hazard which, if disregarded, will result in severe personal injury or death. WARNING The word WARNING indicates the information relates to a specific immediate hazard or unsafe practice which, if disregarded, could result in personal injury or death. CAUTION The word CAUTION indicates the information pertains to a potential hazard or unsafe practice which, if disregarded, may result in minor personal injury or equipment damage. NOTE The word NOTE indicates the information is important to the correct operation or maintenance of the machine. OPERATOR SAFETY PRECAUTIONS DANGER Do not place any part of the body into a potential pinch point. Do not attempt to operate Sherman & Reilly equipment without proper instruction, including reading and understanding the manual. Obey and enforce all warnings including OSHA requirements and ANSI standards. Always wear proper safety equipment as required by employer. Never bypass safety switches or operate equipment with faulty safety devices. Be sure all guards and access covers are securely in place when the machine is being operated. Be aware of people in the work area who may be at risk during operation. Know all emergency shutdown procedures. Refer to the engine manufacturer s manual for all information regarding the safe operation of the engine, including starting, operation and service. Never operate equipment while under the influence of any substance which could impair operator ability or judgement. This presents a safety hazard in the work place. Do not operate equipment if work ability is impaired by fatigue, illness, or other causes. Do not refuel the unit while the engine is running or hot. Keep all body parts, head, and limbs away from all moving parts. Avoid contact with the engine components and exhaust system. Know the location and function of all controls, gauges, instruments, and protective devices. Do not exceed unit specifications and limitations for weight. Know where to get help in the event of an emergency or injury. 2.1

10 Section 3 OPERATION TERMS YOU NEED TO KNOW Top Sheave The entry point of the pulling line onto the unit after it leaves the duct. Cable Guard A guard to prevent the pulling line from jumping the edge of the top sheave during the pull. Side Plate Closes in the top sheave at the top of the backbone. Pulling Handle The handle on the top of the CP-50 used for wheeling the unit around. Backbone The main frame of the unit. Backbone Grips Textured surface on the backbone used for lifting the unit onto the duct. Duct Adapter The Adapter secures the CP-50 to the duct. There are three sizes to accommodate a wide range of duct sizes. Duct Adapter Release Button The detent button that releases the duct adapter allowing removal from the backbone. Release Button Hole The locking hole for the release button on the duct adapters. Capstan Sheave The large pulley attached to the gear drive used to provide the pulling force on the CP-50. Base Assembly This assembly contains the Base frame, transmission, axle and wheels, foot and gas powered drill mount. Backbone Pocket This is the point at which the backbone is attached to the base assembly. The backbone is inserted into the pocket and secured with bolts. Foot The stabilizer leg on the rear if the unit to keep the CP50 upright. Drill Mount The large tube containing the hex drive into which the gas powered drill is inserted to drive the unit. Vibration Damper The rubber ring on the top of the drill mount to minimize vibration of the gas powered drill. Hex Drive The drive lug inside the drill mount which is the input shaft of the transmission, and is driven by the drive adapter on the gas powered drill. Drive Adapter The socket extension chucked into the gas powered drill. Output Shaft The drive shaft on the transmission which drives the Capstan Sheave. Data Plate Located on the rear of the base assembly the plate is stamped with model, serial number and date of manufacture. Accessory Kit Cardboard box included in the shipping carton to contain the loose parts. Backbone Wrap Protective tube to protect the backbone during shipping. Drill Adapter The standard drill adapter fits Stihl and Echo gas powered drills, there is an optional adaptor to accommodate Tanaka gas powered drills. Duct Standoff Supports the CP-50 Puller in position on the duct. 3.2

11 Section 3 OPERATION OPERATING THE CP-50 Select the correct size duct adapter and insert it into the receiver on the backbone. Make sure the duct adapter is securely latched in place. Place the CP-50 puller on the duct with the duct adapter securely inside the duct and the standoff resting against the duct, keeping the unit in place. DUCT ADAPTERS Attach the nylon pulling rope to the string inside the duct. If a Rodder is used connect the pulling Rope to the end of the rodder. NOTE It is recommended the pulling rope be 1 4" to 3 8" diameter with a minimum of 500 pound capacity. Mule tape is not recommended for use with the CP-50 Puller 3.3

12 Section 3 OPERATION If the feed end of the duct is on a pole or above ground, install a stringing block over the feed end of the duct. Run the string through the block and pull the pulling rope back through the duct. If a rodder is used, feed the pulling rope over the block sheave after the pulling rope is pulled through the duct. Connect the pulling rope to the conductor by using a pulling grip and a secure knot. Run the grip and conductor through the stringing block and start it into the duct. CONDUCTOR NOTE If the feed end of the duct is pad mounted, use an underground roller or install a stringing block above the duct. PULLING GRIP 3.4

13 Section 3 OPERATION At the pulling end, route the pulling rope over the top sheave of the CP-50 and wrap it counterclockwise around the capstan sheave. NOTE To operate efficiently, the pulling rope should not have more than three wraps around the capstan sheave. Insert the gas powered drill into the drill mount, Make certain the drive adapter engages the hex shaft and the pin on the adapter is in the slot on the drill mount. MOUNT Start the gas powered drill and leave it in neutral. Select a gear and lock the throttle on high idle. NOTE It is best to start in a lower gear and Shift up if the pull will allow for more Speed. 3.5

14 Section 3 OPERATION Apply moderate tension to the rope as it leaves the capstan sheave. Tail pressure on the rope will allow the CP-50 to pull in the conductor. Lack of tension or tail pressure will allow the pulling rope to slip on the capstan sheave or not pull at all. NOTE Slow the pull when the pulling grip starts Coming out of the end of the duct. The conductor should not be allowed to wrap onto the capstan sheave. When the pull is complete, turn off the drill and remove it from the puller. Remove the puller from the duct.
