2 Introduction General It is generally recommended that S&C Vista SD Underground Distribution Switchgear with Visi-Gap Load-Interrupter Switches and Visi-Gap Fault Interrupters be inspected six months to a year after installation and then every five years thereafter to ensure continued proper performance of the gear. Each user s own experience as well as environmental conditions at the installation will determine whether more or less frequent inspections are required. A partial visual inspection of the gear for general cleanliness, and to confirm proper alignment and condition of cable terminations may be performed with the gear energized, if permitted by the user s own operating practices and provided that standard precautionary practices are followed. Such visual inspections may be performed when the gear is visited for other reasons, as well. However, the more detailed inspection and maintenance procedures outlined in this publication may only be completed when the unit is completely de-energized and grounded. S&C recommends that switchgear be completely de-energized and properly grounded according to the user s operating and safety procedures, and thoroughly cleaned by hand. If it is not possible to de-energize the gear, the use of pressure sprayed dry ice (solid CO 2 ) is an acceptable alternative cleaning method. The use of pressure sprayed abrasives or solvents is specifically not recommended because such abrasives or solvents will damage the switchgear. If maintenance is required that is beyond the scope of this publication, or if replacement parts are necessary, contact the nearest S&C Sales Office. Have the complete catalog number of the gear and date of shipment (as shown on the nameplate) available for reference. Qualified Persons WARNING The equipment covered by this publication must be installed, operated, and maintained by qualified persons who are knowledgeable in the installation, operation, and maintenance of underground electric power distribution equipment along with the associated hazards. A qualified person is one who is trained and competent in: The skills and techniques necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from non-live parts of electrical equipment. The skills and techniques necessary to determine the proper approach distances corresponding to the voltages to which the qualified person will be exposed. The proper use of the special precautionary techniques, per sonal protective equipment, insulating and shielding materials, and insulated tools for working on or near exposed energized parts of electrical equipment. These instructions are intended only for such qualified persons. They are not intended to be a substitute for adequate training and experience in safety procedures for this type of equipment. 2 S&C Instruction Sheet

5 Safety Precautions DANGER S&C Vista SD Underground Distribution Switchgear operates at high voltage. Failure to observe the precautions below will result in serious personal injury or death. Some of these precautions may differ from your company s operating procedures and rules. Where a discrepancy exists, follow your company s operating procedures and rules. 1. Qualified Persons. Access to the Vista SD underground distribution switchgear must be restricted only to qualified persons. See Qualified Persons on page Safety Procedures. Always follow safe operating procedures and rules. Always maintain proper clearance from energized components. 3. Personal Protective Equipment. Always use suitable protective equipment such as rubber gloves, rubber mats, hard hats, safety glasses, and arc-flash clothing in accordance with safe operating procedures and rules. 4. Doors. High-voltage compartment doors must be securely closed and latched, with padlocks in place at all times unless work is being performed inside the enclosure. 5. Key Interlocks. Optional key interlocks, if furnished, must be in place. Check the operating sequence of key interlocks to verify proper sequencing. After the switchgear is installed, destroy all duplicate keys or make them accessible only to authorized persons so that the keyinterlock scheme will not be compromised. 6. Opening Doors. Do not apply any undue force when attempting to open a door. The use of undue force may damage the door-latching mechanism. 7. Safety Labels. Do not remove or obscure any of the DANGER, WARNING,, or NOTICE labels. 8. Energized Bushings. Always assume that the bushings are energized unless proven otherwise by test, by visual evidence of an open-circuit condition at the load-interrupter switch or fault interrupter, or by observing that the loadinterrupter switch or fault interrupter is grounded. 9. Backfeed. Bushings, cables, load-interrupter switches, and fault interrupters may be energized by backfeed. 10. Grounding. Vista SD Switchgear must be connected to a suitable earth ground before energizing, and at all times when energized. The ground wire(s) must be bonded to the system neutral, if present. If the system neutral is not present, proper precautions must be taken to ensure that the local earth ground cannot be severed or removed. After the switchgear has been completely disconnected from all sources of power and tested for voltage, properly ground the load-interrupter switches and fault interrupters before touching any bushings or components that are to be inspected, replaced, serviced, or repaired. 11. Load-Interrupter Switch or Fault Interrupter Position. Always confirm the open/closed position of the load-interrupter switch or fault interrupter by visually observing the position of the isolating disconnect. Load-interrupter switch or fault interrupter may be energized by backfeed. Load-interrupter switch or fault interruper may be energized in any position. 12. Maintaining Proper Clearance. Always maintain proper clearance from energized components. S&C Instruction Sheet

6 Inspection and Maintenance Vault-Mounted Styles Item Procedures 1. Visually inspect the exterior of the switchgear assembly for excess dirt and weeds, and rodent, reptile, and insect intrusion. 2. If cleaning is necessary, S&C recommends using water to wash dirty or contaminated surfaces. Mild soap may be used to remove particularly stubborn deposits on painted surfaces. Do not use solvents such as acetone. Clean Exterior S&C recommends that switchgear be completely de-energized and properly grounded according to the user s operating and safety procedures, and thoroughly cleaned by hand. Exercise Visi-Gap Load-Interrupter Switches and Visi-Gap Fault Interrupters Exercise Motor Operators (if furnished) Inspect Cables and Cable Terminations Inspect Key Interlocks 1. Exercise Visi-Gap load-interrupter switches and Visi-Gap fault interrupters; check the operating mechanism indicators and isolating disconnect for proper opening and closing. 2. Inspect the isolating disconnect; confirm that there is no dielectric fluid leaking from the viewing window. If dielectric fluid is leaking, wipe up the fluid and contact the nearest S&C Sales Office. 1. Decouple motor operators from their respective load-interrupter switches or fault interrupters (switching operations will result in temporary service interruptions if the operators are coupled). 2. Press and hold the Test lamp push button on the portable remote control pendant. The pendant will go through a test sequence flashing all the lamps using the various colors thay are capable of displaying. 3. Exercise motor operators to ensure that they are operating properly. Confirm that Open or Closed indicator LEDs on the portable remote control pendant match the Open or Closed indicators on the operating mechanism. If auxiliary contacts (Catalog Number Suffix -Sx ) are furnished, confirm that the Open or Closed indicator LEDs on the portable remote control pendant match the position of the isolating disconnect. 4. Return all motor operators to their original positions and recouple them to their respective load-interrupter switches or fault interrupters. 1. Visually inspect the cable terminations and surge arresters for signs of physical or electrical damage. 1. Verify proper functioning of key interlocks, if furnished. S&C Vista SD Underground Distribution Switchgear should be inspected six months to a year after installation and every five years thereafter to ensure continued proper performance of the gear. If maintenance is required that is beyond the scope of this publication or if replacement parts are necessary, contact the nearest S&C Sales Office. Have the complete catalog number of the gear and date of shipment (as shown on the nameplate) available for reference. 6 S&C Instruction Sheet
