It announces important training standards and procedures changes and clarifies those that are established. It is a requirement of your membership commitment that you keep abreast of standards by reviewing the information contained in these quarterly updates. Implementation and standards mailing dates vary for members served by different PADI Offices, based, in part, on translation schedules. Check with your PADI Office for more specific information. Starting with the First Quarter 2008 edition, the Training Bulletin, English version, is printed inside The Undersea Journal instead of distributing it separately. This change allows you to read about significant standards changes and technical information in the Training Bulletin while quickly referencing supporting articles in The Undersea Journal. In other languages the Training Bulletin remains a separate means of communication. Remember that Training Bulletins are required reading for PADI Members, so always look for it inside the magazine. Like its predecessor, the erdp, the new erdpml is not a dive computer but an electronic dive table that allows the user to plan single level and multilevel dives. While the first generation erdp provided the same information as the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) table, the erdpml provides the same information as The Wheel, in an electronic format. The erdpml helps maximize bottom time by allowing dive planning in two-meter/five-foot increments. The erdpml has a robust design that includes a flip cover to protect the unit when not in use. The general rules and dive planning abbreviations (NDL, ANDL, ML, etc.) are printed on the inside of the flip cover, which provides easy access to information. Like the previous erdp, the erdpml is designed solely for use on the surface it s water resistant, not waterproof. The erdpml allows you to select either metric or imperial for dive planning and offers the same three modes as before: Dive Planning allows you to plan up to five consecutive single-depth dives or two- to three-level multilevel dives (similar to The Wheel) Surface Interval for finding minimum surface interval between dives Maximum Depth for calculating the maximum allowable depth for a given time The same general rules and guidelines that apply when using The Wheel also apply when using the erdpml. Like the erdp, the erdpml will prompt you to use some of these rules. For example: Reminding you when a safety stop is required Warning you when your planned dive is beyond the RDP limits Reminding you when Special Rules for Multiple Dives (WX and YZ rules) apply Warning you when your next planned level in a multilevel dive exceeds the multilevel ascent limit (Exceeds ML Ascent Limit) Incorporating erdpml in your diver courses Because the erdpml replaces the original erdp and The Wheel, you can use it in any PADI course to plan either single level or multilevel dives. Though your PADI Office will no longer distribute The Wheel or the first generation of erdp, you may continue to use them in your diver-level courses until your stock is used up. 3 erdpml Beginning 1 January 2009, PADI Divemaster candidates will be required to have and be competent in the use of the erdpml in addition to the RDP table version. Starting immediately, Divemaster candidates may use the erdpml in place of the RDP table and The Wheel during the Decompression Theory and the Recreational Dive Planner Divemaster exam. The English erdpml and erdpml Desktop Version (developed in Flash format for teaching purposes) start shipping in August through all PADI Offices. (erdpml product number 70031; erdpml Desktop Version product number 70903). The Instructions for Use and Study Guide will be available from October 2008 in German, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish. PADI Open Water Diver Course Online Available in Spanish The PADI Open Water Diver Course Online will be available for your Spanish-speaking students by early August. The fully-translated version includes text, audio and video in Spanish. This new knowledge development option means that Spanish-speakers now have three ways to study independently manual and video, Multimedia and now elearning. The Spanish version is the third language for PADI elearning following English in May 2007 and the recent launch of the PADI Open Water Diver Course Online in Japanese. New Drift Diver Specialty Materials The PADI Drift Diver specialty course now has support materials that fully complement the course a diver manual and video. In addition to the new diver materials, the revised instructor guide has been updated with the latest information to help divers develop drift diving knowledge and techniques. (Drift Crew-Pak product number 60326; Drift Diver Course Instructor Guide product number 70231). Currently these materials are only available in English, and there are no plans for a translation in other European languages at this point of time. Training Bulletin Third Quarter 2008 Page 3

4 Instructor Development erdpml Use Because the erdpml will replace The Wheel and the original erdp, beginning 1 January 2009, PADI Instructor candidates will be required to have and be able to competently use the erdpml in addition to the RDP table version. However, starting immediately, instructor candidates may use the erdpml. As was the case with The Wheel and original erdp, candidates are expected to have proficiency using both the erdpml and the RDP table version, and be capable of teaching both RDP versions. A PowerPoint presentation (in English only for the beginning) that overviews the background, theory and use of the erdpml is available for download from the PADI Pros Site. Update your IDCs by integrating this presentation into the How to Teach the Recreational Dive Planner segment of the IDC until a curriculum revision is available. erdpml at the Instructor Examination Currently, all of the RDP questions in the IE Dive Theory written exams, whether designated as table or Wheel questions, can be solved using the erdpml. Through 2008, IE candidates may use the RDP table version, The Wheel, the erdp or the erdpml to answer exam questions. In 2009, only the RDP table and erdpml will be allowed. IE Knowledge Development assignments will clearly designate which RDP the candidate should teach the RDP table, the erdpml or The Wheel through the remainder of Instructor Development Questions Q. Is training in the use of the Manually Triggered Resuscitator Valve (MTRV) required during the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Instructor Training Course? A. No. The MTRV skill is optional in both the Emergency Oxygen Provider course and the Specialty Instructor Training Course. However, if an MTRV is available, it s highly recommended that you familiarize instructor candidates with its use. When an MTRV is not available, review the optional skill information with instructor course participants. Q. Is a DSAT Gas Blender certification (or a qualifying gas blender certification from another certification organization) a DSAT Gas Blender Instructor training course prerequisite? A. Yes. To provide this training for their instructor candidates, many DSAT Gas Blender Instructor Trainers conduct a DSAT Gas Blender course immediately before their instructor courses. This allows the instructor candidates to participate in and observe a role-model DSAT Gas Blender course. However, if time does not permit conducting a separate blender course, you may combine the DSAT Gas Blender course with the DSAT Gas Blender Instructor course by running the programs concurrently. Complete a PIC (envelope or online) for the DSAT Gas Blender certification for each candidate and submit these to your PADI Office along with the DSAT Gas Blender Instructor applications. (Don t forget to indicate either EANx or Trimix on the application and the PIC.) If candidates hold a qualifying gas blender certification from another certification organization, attach a copy of the certification to the DSAT Gas Blender Instructor application to avoid processing delays. 5 emergency first response Chest Compression-only CPR The American Heart Association recently made announcement pertaining to chest compression-only CPR. They state that if the rescuer has not had training or does not feel comfortable or confident in giving rescue breaths, providing compression-only CPR is sufficient. Some resuscitation councils have made no change or announcement, stating that there may not be sufficient reason to add this information to layperson courses. Emergency First Response philosophy has always been that any attempt to assist another in need is better than no attempt. If a layperson is uncomfortable giving mouth-to-mouth for any reason, yet is willing to give chest compressions, the patient may still benefit. For this reason, existing EFR materials already include information on chest compression-only CPR. To meet EFR Primary Care requirements, students continue to learn rescue breaths and compressions as usual. In addition, you can discuss the use of chest compression-only CPR and why someone might choose it. Remind students that CPR including rescue breaths is always preferable, yet if no barriers are available or a lay responder otherwise feels anxious about rescue breathing, chest compression-only CPR is preferable to delaying CPR until medical professionals arrive. The European Resuscitation Council (ERC) is not supportive of this change to chest compression-only CPR at this point of time. So the recommendations for CPR in the ERC Guidelines have not changed. There might be national Resuscitation Councils that have different recommendations or guidelines, but at the time of printing this Training Bulletin there was no information available that this is the case. newand Revised Exams There have been some minor corrections to the PADI Divemaster Final Exam, Product No , version You may locate the English revision information by accessing the PADI Pros Site, Members Toolbox, Exam Revisions. The European version of the PADI Divemaster Final Exam, Product No , has been under a full revision (corrections, wording and layout).
