GAS PROBLEMS IN THE WELL Gas is found in two forms in oil wells: (1) in solution with the well fluid, and (2) as a free gas in the formation. Gas is held in solution by pressure and is released by turbulence, heat and reduced pressure. The presence of gas can reduce pump efficiency. Generally observed problems due to the presence of gas are: 1. Gas Interference 2. Gas lock 3. Gas pound Don-Nan Pump & Supply 2
GAS INTERFERENCE As the gas in its solution passes through the pump intake, the reduction in pressure causes the gas to break out. This free gas occupies a part of the pump intake chamber. Restricts the amount of fluid available to fill the chamber. As a result, the amount of fluid lifted in each stroke is reduced. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 3
Don-Nan Pump & Supply 4
HOW TO RECOGNIZE GAS INTERFERENCE? Low pump efficiency. The pressurized gas creates foam, which might result in an improper lubrication along the moving parts. Gas in the tubing column does not provide as much buoyancy as a column of oil would, which might result in an out of balance condition causing inefficiency and higher operating costs. The well appears to be pumping, but with no production of fluid whatsoever at the surface. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 5
GAS LOCK As the gas in its solution passes through the pump intake, the reduction in pressure causes the gas to break out. Pump intake chamber is filled with gas. As the plunger falls during the down stroke, the presence of gas in the solution causes the fluid to compress. Sufficient pressure is not created for the traveling valve to open. It appears to be a pump off condition. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 6
GAS POUND As the gas in its solution passes through the pump intake, the reduction in pressure causes the gas to break out. Part of the pump intake chamber is filled with gas. Plunger in its down stroke compresses the gas and strikes the fluid. The pump experiences a sudden shock upon striking the fluid. In severe case, it leads to fluid pound. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 7
Don-Nan Pump & Supply 8
PROBLEMS DUE TO GAS POUND Rod buckling Rods rubbing against tubing causing tubing leaks. Splitting of barrel and/or cages. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 9
HOW TO OVERCOME THESE GAS PROBLEMS? Gas must be separated efficiently from the fluid before it enters into the pump intake chamber. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 10
HOW IS DON NAN GAS SEPARATOR DIFFERENT FROM CONVENTIONAL MUD ANCHOR? Don Nan Gas Separator creates a turbulence as the fluid passes through the separator, facilitating the gas to break out from its solution Hot spots for pressure drop as the fluid moves through the Gas Separator in route to the pump intake All the formation fluid from the well bore has to pass through the Gas Separator Don Nan Gas Separator provides a longer fluid path for the gas to break out before reaching the pump intake Don-Nan Pump & Supply 11
Don-Nan Pump & Supply 12
PRINCIPLE This gas separator's principle is based on gas bubble rise velocity. This separator allows the fluid to move with the bubbles rising at a velocity greater than the downward velocity of the liquid. Gas separator is developed based on the general oil field assumption that gas bubbles rise at a rate of 6in/sec. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 13
HOW IS THE DON-NAN GAS SEPARATOR MADE? The gas separator is an assembly of five individual machined components. Components are connected through a series of pin and box threads. All parts are interchangeable. No welded connections, limiting the effects of corrosion and breakage. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 14
WHICH ENVIRONMENT SUITS THE GAS SEPARATOR? Don Nan Gas Separator works in a variety of environments. All components are available in a variety of metallurgies. Don-Nan Pump & Supply 15
