1 HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Essential Functions and Physical Demands Analysis Job Details Job Title: Welder Job Code: Date of Analysis: 11/11/04 Department: Facilities Management and Operations Job Analyst: Ben Haynes, OTD, OTR Summary of Essential Functions The Welder with Houston Independent School District is required to perform the following essential functions during the course of a normal workday: 1. Responsible for receiving work orders and completing other types of paperwork as required. 2. Responsible for completing general welding projects for equipment used in the Houston Independent School District. Product /Workplace Descriptions The work of a Welder with Houston Independent School District is performed in a school district involved primarily in the education of school-aged children and students grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The specific department in which the duties are performed is the Facilities Management and Operations department. Work is completed in a work shop at the McCarty Facilities Management and Operations complex and at schools and administrative buildings owned and operated by the HISD. The worker is also required to visit sites in the school district before building and assembling parts to get a layout of the space where the parts will be placed. Significant Weights The heaviest weight lifted by a Welder generally does not exceed 70 pounds when performing the job. The frequency of lifting over the course of a normal workday would be classified as occasional. It is also important to understand that the heavier weights are lifted only on an occasional basis and that weights lifted at greater frequencies are lighter in nature. The worker is required to lift pieces of metal and other tools and equipment that weigh up to 70 pounds. An automated lifting device is present in the work shop to lift large, heavy, bulky items. Houston Independent School District - Welder 1 9/26/2009
2 The weight of a 1/3 full box of welding rods is 13.1 pounds. This box is lifted from floor to shoulder level. The weight of band saw is 16.3 pounds. This tool is lifted between floor and overhead levels. The weight of a 49 inch tall tank of argon is 68.1 pounds. This tank has a diameter of approximately 12 inches. The worker must lift these tanks off the ground and load the tanks onto work trucks. The tanks are usually lifted with hand placement ranging between knuckle and shoulder level, with varying grip patterns. Pushing/Pulling The physical demands of pushing and pulling take into consideration the force(s) required to overcome inertia. The highest push force required for overcoming inertia was measured at 67.9 pounds and was associated with pushing a 20 foot length of angle iron onto a storage shelf. The highest pull force required to overcome inertia was measured at 86.0 pounds and was required to pull a 20 foot length of angle iron onto a storage shelf. Push Forces The push force required to overcome inertia to move a 1/4 inch X 4 inch X 4 inch angle iron 20 foot piece of steel onto a shelving unit is 67.9 pounds. This push is generally completed with bilateral upper extremities rotated into pronation with the hands together using palmar surface to push against the metal. This push occurs at varying heights (dependant upon the height of the storage shelf where the metal is located). The maximum height of this push is located 53 inches above the ground. The minimum height is located 12 inches above the ground. Pull Forces The pull force required to overcome inertia to move a 1/4 inch 4 inch by 4 inch angle iron 20 foot piece of steel off a shelving unit is 86.0 pounds. This pull is generally completed with bilateral upper extremities rotated into pronation at varying heights. Work Environment The work of a Welder with Houston Independent School District is performed indoors and outdoors in a school system environment. The worker must be able to tolerate hot and cold conditions. The worker is required to wear a uniform consistent with the nature of the work. Required safety equipment at times includes welding gloves, weld sleeves, weld hoods, safety shields, safety glasses, cutting goggles, steel toe boots, back braces, weld aprons, leather weld jackets, and blinders. Tools and equipment used by the Welder include, but are not limited to the following: Automated hoist/lift, hammer, cutting torch, clamps, chisels, vice grips, screwdrivers, combination wrenches, combination squares, framing squares, vices, TIG Welders (high Houston Independent School District - Welder 2 9/26/2009
3 frequency welder used to weld aluminum), MIG Welders (for welding steel-completed by using a wire fed through a tube), Stick Welders (electrode rod used to weld). Regular, dependable attendance is an essential function of this position. Houston Independent School District - Welder 3 9/26/2009

Force takes into consideration the average velocity and/or acceleration of the lift and the effort necessary to overcome inertia. Other factors taken into consideration are the necessary strength to grasp and perform manipulative activities that have an associated strength factor. Worker s Ability ACTIVITY PERFORMED PEAK FORCE AVERAGE Yes No The push force required to overcome inertia to 67.9 pounds move a 1/4 inch X 4 inch X 4 inch angle iron 20 foot piece of steel onto a shelving unit The pull force required to overcome inertia to move a 1/4 inch 4 inch by 4 inch angle iron 20 foot piece of steel off a shelving unit 86.0 pounds Lifting Activities Note: All lifting activities cover both lifting and lowering processes. The point of origin and/or the destination of the lift are classified in the three body zone ranges. The weight ranges given are the weight of the product to be lifted or lowered and does not include the force to be employed in the lifting process. Frequencies are calculated based upon the number of lifts and lowers, the average time of each lift, and then divided into the total time in the workday.
