Job Sheet 1 Geothermal Energy OBJECTIVES In this job sheet, you will become familiar with the training system components. You will operate your training system in heating and cooling mode and observe the temperature at various locations on the system. PROCEDURE Familiarization with the training system components In this part of the job sheet, you will locate and identify some training system components. 1. Identify the highlighted zones in the training system diagram of Figure 15. Record your answers in the table below. Festo Didactic
Circled letter A B C D E Component Figure 15. Training system diagram. 18 Festo Didactic
2. Locate the priming tank (Figure 16) on your training system. Observe the current position of the three-way valves. In the rectangle to the right of the image, draw the diagram corresponding to the position of the three-way valves. Priming tank 3-way valves Pumping station Pump nameplate Figure 16. Priming tank and pumping station. 3. Locate the pumping station. Read the electrical characteristics indicated on the pump nameplate and complete Table 2. Table 2. Electrical characteristics of the pump. Parameter Voltage Frequency Current Number of phase Nameplate data 4. Locate the following indicator lights on the Geothermal Heat Pump control panel: Loop pump Reversing valve Festo Didactic
Compressor Desuperheater Heat pump fault Circulation pump 5. Which ranges and units can the loop pressure gauge (PI-1) read? 6. What information can be read on the refrigerant high-pressure (HP) and low-pressure (LP) gauges located on the right side of your training system? Temperature at various locations on the training system in heating mode In this part of the job sheet, you will operate your training system in heating mode and observe the temperature at various locations. a In many job sheets throughout this manual, you will have to set switches, valves, the thermostat, and the air distribution register to achieve specific operating conditions required by the topics covered. In each case, you will be supplied with a list of components and the required settings. For instance, in the following list, the main power switch must be set to Off. 20 Festo Didactic
7. Perform the following settings: Main power switch... Off Thermostat... Heating mode Temperature set point... 5 C (9 F) above room temperature Valve HV-1... Open Valve HV-2... Open Valve HV-3... Open Valve HV-4... Open Valve HV-5... Open Valve HV-6... Open Valve HV-7... Open Valve HV-8... Closed Valve HV-9... No adjustments required Valve HV Handle in horizontal position Valve HV Open Valve HV Open Valve HV Open Pressure gauge PI-1 selector switch... Right Pressure gauge PI-2 selector switch... Right Desuperheater On/Off switch... Off Priming tank three-way valves... Pumping station three-way valves... a Air distribution register (on top of the heat pump)... Open Heat pumps have several protection devices and do not start immediately when power is turned on. The blower and the ground loop pump may be running before the heat pump turns on. 8. Turn the system on by setting the main power switch to On. Immediately feel the temperature at the various locations identified by a circled letter in Figure 17 by touching the components with your hands. Record your observations using the terms cold, room temperature, warm, and hot in the At start up column of Table 3. After a while, the compressor starts and the corresponding indicator light on the control panel turns on. Wait until the compressor has been running for ten minutes, and then repeat your temperature observations. Record your observations in the After 10 minutes of operation in heating mode column in Table 3. Festo Didactic

9. Using the words On or Off, record the control panel indicator light status in the Heating mode column of Table 4. Table 4. Indicator light status in heating and cooling modes. Indicator light Heating mode Cooling mode Loop pump Compressor Desuperheater pump Reversing valve Circulation pump Heat pump fault 10. Is the air temperature near the air distribution register (G) warmer than the air temperature near the heat pump air intake (F)? 11. Did the water in the ground simulation tank (C) change temperature after ten minutes of compressor operation? 12. Did the temperature of the water flowing through the ground loops increase or decrease after ten minutes of compressor operation? Festo Didactic
Temperature at various locations on the training system in cooling mode In this part of the job sheet, you will operate your training system in cooling mode and repeat your temperature observations. You will compare your observed temperatures in heating mode and cooling mode. 13. Perform the following settings on your training system: Main power switch... Off Thermostat... Cooling mode Temperature set point... 5 C (9 F) below room temperature Valve HV-1... Open Valve HV-2... Open Valve HV-3... Open Valve HV-4... Open Valve HV-5... Open Valve HV-6... Open Valve HV-7... Air distribution register (on top of the heat pump)... Open 14. Turn the system on by setting the main power switch to On. Immediately feel the temperature at the various locations identified by a circled letter in Figure 17 by touching the components with your hands. Record your observations using the terms cold, room temperature, warm, and hot in the At the moment when the mode is set to cooling column of Table 3. After a while, the compressor starts and the corresponding indicator light on the control panel turns on. Wait until the compressor has been running for ten minutes, and then repeat your temperature observations. Record your observations in the After 10 minutes of operation in cooling mode column in Table Festo Didactic
15. Using the words On or Off, record the control panel indicator light status in the Cooling mode column of Table Compare your observations in heating and cooling modes recorded in Table 3. Where did the temperature change from warm to cold, and from cold to warm? 17. When you changed the operating mode to cooling, did the reversing valve indicator light turn on or turn off? 18. Based on your answer to the previous question, would you say that the default operating mode of your training system is heating mode or cooling mode? 19. Set the thermostat operating mode to Off, then shut down your training system by setting the main power switch to Off. Name: Date: Instructor's approval: Festo Didactic
