Role of the lifeguard, accountability, pool operators and lifeguard responsibilities The law, regulations, guidance and maintaining standards Teamwork, uniform and equipment, customer care & dealing with the public The pool operator, PSOP and relevance to the lifeguard Safeguarding, equality and diversity and post-traumatic stress disorder 1.2 The candidate must demonstrate an understanding in the principles of swimming pool hazards and controls by satisfactorily answering 6 questions taken from the RLSS UK NPLQ question bank with at least one from each of following five sections. Types of swimming pools, principles of risk assessment, hazard categories and identification Potential risk factors, systems of work and operational systems Pool hazards, equipment, features and relevant control measures by lifeguards People hazards, task hazards and relevant control measures by lifeguards Detailed work instructions, activity hazards and relevant control measures by lifeguards 21

2 1.3 The candidate must demonstrate an understanding in the principles involved in lifeguard intervention and communication by satisfactorily answering 6 questions taken from the RLSS UK NPLQ question bank with at least one from each of following five sections. Principles of early intervention, critical and non-critical interventions Lifeguard zones and scanning Maintaining concentration, lifeguard numbers, positions and visibility Maximum pool user loads, lifeguard rotation and lifeguard duties and responsibilities Communication including whistles, hand signals, alarm systems & emergency equipment Results for Section 1- Elements 1, 2 and 3 Pass / Fail Pass / Fail Pass / Fail Pass / Fail 22

Casualty no more than 8 metres away. The lifeguard team can be used to assist with the recovery. Following the rescue the candidate will explain the action taken. Demonstrate the recovery of a casualty who is lying on the bottom of the deepest part of the pool. Candidates MUST be successful on the first attempt. At the point of support select option: remove the casualty from the water straight away OR demonstrate supported rescue breathing in the water until assistance arrives and then remove from the water. Issue candidate warning - You should be aware that there may be a risk of damage to your hearing by diving to depths greater than 1.5 metres. All dives are undertaken at your own risk., safe entry and approach Recover manikin on first attempt Turn live casualty Safe and effective tow to point of support Safe assisted lift Either - Remove the casualty from the water with assistance Or - Assume delay in arrival of assistance 23

4 Section 2 Element 1 Intervention and Rescue Practical rescue immediate response. (continued) At point of support assess for breathing absent / not normal, give simulated rescue breaths until help arrives Safe assisted lift Turn casualty into face up position on poolside. Safe and effective turning of casualty into the face up position Assess for breathing unresponsive and not, give 5 simulated rescue breaths. Assess for breathing - unresponsive and not Ensure an ambulance is called and ask for an AED (if available) Give 5 rescue breaths Manage a casualty who is regurgitating stomach contents. Effective management of a regurgitating casualty Casualty shows clear signs of waking up, moving, opening eyes AND. Place casualty into the recovery position. Safe and effective recovery position 2.4 Timed swim rescue conscious casualty. 20 metres swim, 20 metres tow, casualty in deep water. Torpedo buoy must be used where available. No more than 65 seconds from GO to touch or secure standing position at the end of the tow. 5 Section 2 Element 2 Rescue of a Casualty with a Suspected Spinal Injury (conscious and cooperative) SCIM Deep water rescue. Casualty no more than 8 metres out, vice grip, roll and trawl 10 metres to support standing in shallow water. If only shallow water is available then head splint. Slide in entry and careful approach Effective roll Maintenance of grip during trawl Shallow water rescue. The candidate will demonstrate an effective head splint as dictated by the depth of water. Communication Slide in entry and careful approach Effective roll Stabilisation and casualty recovery from the water. The casualty will be deemed to have suffered a sudden collapse and the team has been alerted to the development of an emergency / EAP implemented. Check for danger and check for response Assess for breathing unresponsive and not Ensure an ambualance is called and ask for an AED (if available) Give 30 chest compressions Give 2 rescue breaths Continue 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths for 2 minutes Demonstrate adult CPR with more than one rescuer and pocket mask. The team has been alerted to the development of an emergency / EAP implemented. The casualty will be deemed to have drowned. This section can be completed directly after the second timed swim unconscious casualty. Check for danger and check for response Assess for breathing unresponsive and not Ensure an ambualance is called and ask for an AED (if available) Place pocket mask on face and give 5 rescue breaths Give 30 chest compressions Give 2 rescue breaths Continue 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths Effective communication between lifeguards Second rescuer takes over with minimum interruption of CPR 27

Second rescuer stabilises the head Check for danger and check for response Assess for breathing unresponsive and not Ensure an ambualance is called and ask for an AED (if available) Give 5 rescue breaths (Attempt to use chin lift alone. If this is unsuccessful, add head tilt, but only the minimum needed to obtain an airway) Give 30 chest compressions Give 2 rescue breaths Continue 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths for 2 minutes 3.2 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of conditions associated with casualties who are not. Answer six questions taken from the RLSS UK NPLQ question bank with at least one from each section: Principles of resuscitation, agonal gasps, when to stop CPR and airway management Drowning and choking Principles of airway management on a casualty with a suspected spinal cord injury The use of a Pocket Mask during rescue breathing 28

9 Section 3 - Element 3 First Aid 3.4 Demonstrate the emergency management of an injured casualty. Answer six questions taken from the RLSS UK NPLQ question bank with one question from each of the following six sections: Priorities of first aid, first aid supplies and training, hygiene, needles and sharps Heart attack, shock, asthma, anaphylactic shock and hyperventilation Bleeding, burns and scalds, fractures and dislocation Sprains and strains, cramp and head injuries Eye injuries, dental injuries, fainting and stroke Poisoning, bites and stings, diabetes, seizures, heat and cold injuries Results for Section 3 - Elements 1, 2 and 3 Pass / Fail Pass / Fail Pass / Fail Pass / Fail Overall assessment results Pass / Fail Pass / Fail Pass / Fail Pass / Fail Assessments finish time 29
