1 Number 38 TECTYL 1422S APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE Tectyl 1422S is a low VOC, high solids, solventborne corrosion preventive coating. Tectyl 1422S provides excellent protection to ferrous and nonferrous metals with a single application. The cured film is hard with unique flexibility. Tectyl 1422S is an industrial coating suitable for intermodal chassis, farm, road and construction equipment. The addition of any product over or under this coating is not recommended. SPRAY EQUIPMENT PREPARATION/RECOMMENDATIONS If the spray pump, lines, and/or guns have been exposed to any coating other than Tectyl 1422S, the equipment must be flushed out with a solvent such as Methyl Propyl Ketone, Acetone, or Xylene. After draining solvent, flush system with Tectyl 1422S to remove any solvent residual. Fan Pattern: An 8-12 inch pattern from a inch spray distance is recommended. Application equipment parameters will vary depending on actual manufacturers equipment, spray line lengths, and diameters, and will vary according to product viscosity. SURFACE PREPARATION The maximum performance of Tectyl 1422S can be achieved only when the metal surfaces to be protected are clean, dry, and free of rust, oil, and mill scale. Daubert Chemical Company recommends that the metal substrate temperature be F (10-35 C) at the time of product application. PRODUCT APPLICATION INFORMATION Tectyl 1422S is formulated to be used as supplied. Ensure uniform consistency prior to use. Continued stirring is generally not required. If the product thickens due to cold storage or loss of solvent during use, contact Daubert Chemical Company. DO NOT THIN Tectyl 1422S. Incorrect thinning will affect film build, dry time and product performance Daubert Chemical Company recommends that the ambient and product temperature be F (10-35 C) at time of application. DO NOT FREEZE Tectyl 1422S. Some of the results listed below can occur if the product temperature does not remain within this temperature range: Poor wetability and coverage Orange peel and pitting Increased paint usage Sag resistance fluctuations The substrate being coated should also be F (10-35 C) at time of application.

3 Technical Bulletin 38 Page 3 WET/DRY FILM THICKNESS RECOMMENDATIONS The recommended dry film thickness (DFT) for Tectyl 1422S is mils, over the surface profile. The surface profile must be determined to establish the wet film thickness (WFT) required to properly cover the peaks of the profile. Proper wet film thickness can be achieved with a single coat or with a tack/finish coat application. Based on the surface profile, the following wet film thickness chart applies for the finish coat. The finish coat is recommended to be applied immediately after the tack coat. (NOTE: It is not recommended to delay more than 2 hours between the tack coat and the finish coat.) The recommended wet film thickness chart should be followed. Excessive dry film thickness, 6.0 mils over the surface profile, will increase dry time, limiting initial weather exposure, labeling and handling parameters, and long-term flexibility. MORE IS NOT BETTER! If the wet film thickness is properly applied, then the following parameters can be followed: Handling Labeling Weather Exposure (rain & snow) 1 hour 1½ hours 3 hours IMPORTANT: These parameters are established for air dry application at ambient temperatures (50-95 F). Force drying will accelerate dry time.

5 Technical Bulletin 38 Page 5 TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE FOR AIRLESS SPRAY EQUIPMENT Here are some field problems sometimes encountered when using airless spray equipment to apply Tectyl 1422S. Some basic maintenance suggestions follow, together with tips to remedy problems. MAINTENANCE OF EQUIPMENT NOTE: Remember, the pump manufacturer has a manual for service operation maintenance and spare parts. Read it and follow directions for trouble-free operation. 1) Pumps in daily use should be cleaned at least every week. 2) If the pump is to be stored for any length of time, it must be cleaned before storing. 3) Never let pump remain in an empty drum overnight. The result of this practice is clogged ports or foot valves. Always place pumps in a fresh drum of product, or clean pump immediately. RECOMMENDED CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS 1) Immerse pump in ketone solvent. (Be sure to reduce the air pressure before flushing.) 2) Pump approximately two quarts of cleaning solution through the complete system, leaving the tip and filter intact. 3) Remove the tip and filter, then repeat the procedure as outlined in Number 2, using one gallon of solvent. Flush for at least 3 minutes. 4) Clean filter and tip with solvent. Do not use any object such as a pin to clean the tip. If the apparatus is not completely clean, try pressing air hose to tip and use the air pressure to clean tip. NOTE: Keep solvent in a safe place. Keep away from eyes and face.

6 Technical Bulletin 38 Page 6 ANALYZING FIELD PROBLEMS PROBLEM: Material will not spray. A) Check air lines to compressor. B) Check air pressure gauge to see if correct recommended pressure is being used. C) Try increasing air pressure gradually. (This will also, at times, blow tip clean if clogged.) D) Remove and clean both filter and tip. PROBLEM: Material sprays, but in an uneven pattern. A) Check air pressure. B) Spray material for half a minute, shut gun off. If pump continues after gun is shut off, pump is worn and an uneven flow of material is reaching the gun. (Equipment won't last forever. Contact your equipment dealer for help.) C) Tip should be removed and cleaned; it may be partially clogged. D) Material may be too cold. Minimum recommended temperature for spraying is 50 F. E) Filter may be clogged; remove and clean. PROBLEM: Material building up and dropping off. A) Check tip. This is a sure sign that tip is either worn or damaged, causing an uneven spray pattern. B) Check air pressure. Pressure should not drop more than 5 psig with a 15:1 pump, or 15 psig with a 45:1 pump. C) Try increasing air pressure. Pump may be worn and not giving an even flow of material. D) Be sure the surface being coated is not excessively dirty. Most airless spray equipment on the market today is of good quality, but all must be maintained properly to give the ultimate in service. Nearly all spraying problems can be solved or minimized by knowing how to operate the equipment and by keeping it clean and in good repair.
