The candidate will be given boots, pants, coat, hood, gloves and helmet and SCBA. The candidate will have already donned PPE. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 1 minute Donning SCBA: Seat-Mounted Bracket Test Retest Dons full PPE ensemble prior to mounting fire apparatus Safely mounts apparatus and sits in seat, placing arms through SCBA shoulder straps Fastens seat belt Partially tightens shoulder straps When the apparatus stops, releases seatbelt and SCBA from bracket Exits apparatus Attaches waist belt and cinches down Adjusts shoulder straps Opens main cylinder valve Removes helmet and pulls back hood Dons face piece and checks for adequate seal Replaces protective hood and helmet and secures chinstrap If necessary, connects regulator to face piece Activates airflow and PASS alarm Candidate must successfully perform 10/14 steps. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 1 minute Donning SCBA: Over-the-Head Method Test Retest Opens case and lays out SCBA with cylinder valve away from self and places shoulder straps out to the sides Fully opens main cylinder valve Bends down and grasps SCBA back plate with both hands Uses legs to lift SCBA over head Balances the back plate on back Slides SCBA down back while arms slide into shoulder straps Tightens shoulder straps and secures waist belt Removes helmet and pulls hood back Dons face piece and checks for an adequate seal Pulls protective hood into position, replaces helmet, and secures chinstrap If necessary, connects regulator to face piece Activates air flow and PASS alarm Candidate must successfully perform 9/12 steps. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 1 minute Donning SCBA: Coat Method Test Retest Opens case and lays out SCBA with cylinder valve toward self Fully opens main cylinder valve Places dominant hand on the opposite shoulder strap Lifts SCBA and swings it over dominant shoulder Slides other hand between the SCBA cylinder and corresponding shoulder strap Tightens shoulder straps Attaches waist belt and adjusts Removes helmet and pulls hood back Dons face piece and checks for an adequate seal Pulls protective hood into position, replaces helmet, and secures chinstrap If necessary, connects regulator to face piece Activates air flow and PASS alarm Candidate must successfully perform 9/12 steps. 11 Monthly SCBA Inspection 2007 Edition, NFPA 1081 Chapter 6.2.2b, b AFC & PSC Industrial Fire Brigade Skill Sheet 1-10 The candidate will properly complete a monthly inspection of SCBA. The candidate will be provided with SCBA. (The candidate may need forms from the AHJ to complete documentation) Expected time to complete skill(s) is 1 minute. Monthly SCBA Inspection Test Retest Removes SCBA from apparatus and places on floor or bench Inspects mounting bracket for damage or wear Examines overall condition of SCBA and notes any damage Removes cylinder from the harness and checks hydrostatic test date Checks cylinder for damage and wear Inspects shoulder straps and waist belt Checks all buckles and fasteners Examines the back plate for damage, cracks, or rust Makes sure all connection points between the cylinder and the SCBA harness operate properly and are free of damage or corrosion Reattaches the cylinder to the harness Checks all hoses and connection points for wear, cuts, or damage Opens air-cylinder valve and compares regulator gauge readings Attaches face piece and checks regulator for proper operation Activates PASS alarm. Allows SCBA to sit idle until PASS activates Shuts off air-cylinder valve and opens bypass valve to bleed pressure while checking low pressure alarm Returns unit to mounting bracket in ready condition Completes all necessary paperwork Candidate must successfully perform 12/17 steps. The candidate will be provided with a SCBA, face piece, clean water, stiff brush, soft brush, mild soap and a 5-gallon bucket. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes. Cleaning/Sanitizing SCBA Test Retest Inspects SCBA before cleaning Removes face piece from regulator Detaches SCBA cylinder from harness Rinses all parts of SCBA with clean water Scrubs SCBA cylinder and harness with soapy water, rinses, and allows to dry Prepares cleaning solution Submerges the SCBA face piece in solution Washes regulator with solution If necessary, scrubs contaminants from face piece and regulator with soft brush Rinses face piece and regulator and allows to dry Reassembles and inspects SCBA Candidate must successfully perform 8/11 steps. The candidate will be provided a radio. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 1 minute. Using a Radio Test Retest Determines that channel is clear. If clear, depresses push-to talk (PTT) button and waits two seconds before speaking Holds microphone 1 to 2 from mouth and speaks across it at a 45 angle Speaks clearly and keeps message brief Releases PPT button when done speaking Candidate must successfully perform 3/4 steps. The candidate will be provided with a telephone and intercom system. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 1 minute. Identifies self and brigade or location Determines if caller has an emergency. Operating a Carbon Dioxide Extinguisher Test Retest Pulls pin on handle Removes horn or nozzle from secured position on extinguisher and aims in direction of approach Gives trigger a quick squeeze to ensure extinguisher operates and discharges properly Approaches fire with exit to his or her back Aims the nozzle at the base of the fire and squeezes trigger Sweeps extinguishing agent side to side and continues to aim at base of flames Stops use once fire is out or extinguisher is exhausted Backs away from fire without turning back to fire Overhauls fire to ensure extinguishment Candidate must successfully perform 7/9 steps. Extinguish Class B Fire with Stored-Pressure Foam Extinguisher Test Retest Attacks fire from a safe distance Does not aim initial discharge directly into burning liquid at close range Lobs the foam in arc over fire to create a blanket that floats on the surface Slowly sweeps stream back and forth above flaming surface to widen foam blanket Lets foam blanket flow across surface of burning liquid After extinguishment, continues to apply extinguishing agent until liquid surface is fully covered by foam blanket Applies additional extinguishing agent as needed to maintain foam blanket and control re-ignition Candidate must successfully perform 5/7 steps. The candidate will be provided with a wet chemical fire extinguisher and the following PPE: boots, pants, coat, hood, gloves, helmet, SCBA and face piece. 23 Applying a Halogenated Extinguishing Agent 2007 Edition, NFPA 1081 Chapter 5.2.1b, 6.3.6b Industrial Fire Brigade Skill Sheet 7-8 The candidate shall be able to properly extinguish a fire in an electrical equipment room with a halogenated agent fire extinguisher. The candidate will be provided with a halogenated agent fire extinguisher and the following PPE: boots, pants, coat, hood, gloves, helmet, SCBA and face piece. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 5 minutes. Applying a Halogenated Extinguishing Agent Test Retest If possible, the candidate turns off power supply from remote location before extinguishing fire Stands back at least 8' (2.4 m) before discharging extinguishing agent Directs stream at base, slowly sweeping from side to side Continues applying extinguishing agent for a short period after flames are extinguished If necessary, repeats agent application Candidate must successfully perform 4/5 steps. 24 Use of Dry Powder Fire Extinguishing Agent 2007 Edition, NFPA 1081 Chapter 5.2.1b, 6.3.6b Industrial Fire Brigade Skill Sheet 7-9 The candidate shall be able to properly extinguish a Class D fire with a dry powder fire extinguisher. The candidate will be provided with a dry powder fire extinguisher, a shovel and the following PPE: boots, pants, coat, hood, gloves, helmet, SCBA and face piece. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 5 minutes. Use of Dry Powder Fire Extinguishing Agent Test Retest Opens nozzle completely and directs extinguishing agent so it falls onto top of burning material Closes nozzle valve to produce soft, heavy flow and moves closer to cover fire area. When using a shovel or scoop to apply agent, applies a thick, even coat of agent over entire fire to smother it Spreads a layer of extinguishing agent near the fire Carefully shovels burning metal into layer of powder and covers with more extinguishing agent as needed. If hot spots develop, applies more extinguishing agent If hot spots develop, applies more extinguishing agent Allows remains of fire to cool undisturbed Does not disturb blanket of extinguishing agent until fire has completely cooled Candidate must successfully perform 5/7 steps. 26 Safety Knot No NFPA 1081 Requirements Industrial Fire Brigade Skill Sheet 9-2 The candidate shall be able to properly tie a safety knot. The candidate will be provided with a section of rope. Safety Knot Test Retest Takes loose end of rope, beyond the knot, and forms a loop around the standing part of rope Passes loose end of rope through loop Tightens safety knot by pulling both ends simultaneously Tests to see if safety knot is tied correctly Candidate must successfully perform 3/4 steps. 27 Half Hitch No NFPA 1081 Requirements Industrial Fire Brigade Skill Sheet 9-3 The candidate shall be able to properly tie a half hitch. The candidate will be provided with a section of rope and an object to tie the rope around. 28 Clove Hitch Tied in the Open No NFPA 1081 Requirements Industrial Fire Brigade Skill Sheet 9-4 The candidate shall be able to properly tie a clove hitch in the open. The candidate will be provided with a section of utility rope. Clove Hitch Tied in the Open Test Retest Makes a loop using left hand. Running part of rope should be over working part Makes a second loop using right hand. Running part of rope is under working part Puts right-hand loop on top of left-hand loop Slides loops over object Pulls in opposite directions to tighten Ties a safety knot in working end of rope Candidate must successfully perform 5/6 steps. 29 Clove Hitch Tied Around an Object No NFPA 1081 Requirements Industrial Fire Brigade Skill Sheet 9-5 The candidate shall be able to properly tie a clove hitch around an object. The candidate will be provided with a section of utility rope and an object for the rope to be tied around.
