3 Shall - the instruction is compulsory. Should - the instruction is preferred but allows for initiative to be exercised. A JHA should be written for any variation in procedure or for the control of any new hazards that are identified. Correct manual handling technique: Utilise suitable Personnel appropriate for the task- consider age, special skills, capabilities and knowledge. Determine a lifting leader who will provide verbal instructions during the manual handling task. Definitions Ensure all Personnel involved are warm and stretched prior to undertaking any manual handling tasks. Ensure lifting point, path and set down points are free from obstacles and that the floor surfaces are not slippery. Remember to keep your spine in a neutral posture throughout the manual handling task. Consider the use of any manual handling aids, such as trolleys or hoists to minimize the weight lifted by Personnel. Avoid jerky movements, side bending or twisting during the manual handling process. Ensure the load is kept as close to the body as possible with the load sustained below your shoulders but above your mid-thigh. 4 PPE PPE requirements for this task are: high visibility reflective long sleeved shirt and long pants, safety glasses, gloves, safety boots and hard hat Take 5 Complete a Take 5 prior to commencing a prestart inspection, loading/ unloading operations or any other hazardous task. 5 Ensure adequate amount of hydraulic oil is in the oil tank Slips, trip and falls Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings at all times. the correct PPE is worn. Pinch Points Wear the correct PPE, including gloves. Take care when opening and closing doors. Prestart Inspection Inspect hydraulic lines for leaks Inspect electrical cable for cuts or abrasions Check electrical tag for last test and due date Ensure oil sump pump displacement hose is in drum Electrocution Check electrical cables and switches for faults. Ensure they are not sitting in or near water. All cords must be tested and tagged and in date. Environmental Spills Ensure oil sump pump displacement hose is in the drum. 6 Loading the Drum Crusher Raise the door latch handle Open door on drum crusher Select drum and lift using correct lifting technique Drain remaining oil from drum into an IBC Place drum in the centre of the drum crusher Slips, Trips and Falls the correct PPE is worn. Be aware of pinch points when setting the bag down. Clear area of any trip hazard and Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings. Pinch Points Take care when opening or closing machinery. Wear gloves. 7 Raise the door latch handle and close the door Lock the door by turning the door latch handle into the horizontal position the correct PPE is worn. Be aware of pinch points when setting the bag down. Closing the Drum Crusher Slips, Trips and Falls Clear area of any trip hazard and Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings. Pinch Points Take care when opening or closing machinery. Wear gloves. Push the green On button Push the drum crushing head lever down the correct PPE is worn. Activate Drum Crushing Sequence Slips, Trips and Falls Clear area of any trip hazard and Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings. Once the drum crushing head is at full extension you will hear the change in hydraulic pressure and eventually it will cut out Pinch Points Take care when opening or closing machinery. Wear gloves. 8 Lift the drum crushing head lever up to raise the crushing head Machine Damage Do not attempt to compact drum past the compactors limits. Once you hear the change in hydraulic pressure and the hydraulics cut out begin raising the crushing head. Do not attempt to crush anything other than steel drums and oil filters. Once the drum crushing head is fully raised place the drum crushing head lever in the centre position Raise the door latch handle Open the door Remove the drum using correct lifting technique the correct PPE is worn. Be aware of pinch points when setting the bag down. Remove Crushed Material Slips, Trips and Falls Clear area of any trip hazard and Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings. Place drum in scrap steel bin Pinch Points Environmental Spills Take care when opening or closing machinery. Wear gloves. Use the spill kit in the case of a spill. 9 Check oil level in sump Environmental Spills Ensure oil sump pump displacement hose is in the drum. Ensure there is no leaks from holes or fittings along the pump displacement hose. Use spill kit in the case of a spill Drain Oil If oil is close to coming up through the drain holes then the sump needs pumping out Ensure oil sump pump displacement hose is in drum Switch oil pump isolator on Turn on pump using the oil pump switch Slips, Trips and Falls Do not overload the chamber. Only load with approved materials. the correct PPE is worn.
