2 Follow good laboratory practice and Ada Irvine suite local rules. Use the fume cupboard located in room 128 when handling concentrated acids. The acid store is also located in this room. Acids should be stored in a metal fire proof cabinet in a cool place (below 15 0 C) protected from direct sunlight and moisture. Wear vinyl gloves and position cabinet safety screen below face level but allowing sufficient room for safe handling. NEVER ADD WATER TO THIS MATERIAL always add acid to water in small amounts in the fume cupboard to avoid Page 2 of 5

Always slowly add acid to water with mixing to prevent local boiling, will react with water or steam to produce toxic and Chemical burns Corrosive Wear vinyl gloves, safety googles, lab coats whilst handling concentrated sulphuric acid in the fume cupboard and locate safety screen below face level but allow sufficient room for safe handling. Flammable risk Non combustible may produce toxic and Acids are stored in room 128 in a metal fire proof cabinet in a cool place below 15 0 C protected from direct sunlight and moisture. Never add water to this material always add small amounts sulphuric acid to copious water. D. Hazard score * E. Likelihood score * F. Risk to Health - D x E G. Score the potential effect of the injury or accident caused by the hazard as found, with control measures in place. 1 - Very low severity; 2 - Illness may be acute but not debilitating; 3 - Illness may be acute and temporarily debilitating 4 - Illness may be permanently debilitating or lethal E. Likelihood of B happening. 1 - Very low or very unlikely; 2 - Low or unlikely; 3 - Medium or reasonably likely and 4 - High or very likely to happen F. Risk to health: if D x E = 1 to 4, the risk is generally acceptable if D x E = 6 or 8 the risk is generally unacceptable, but may be accepted under certain circumstances. The procedure must be justified. G. How can hazard be reduced, removed or controlled better? H. In case of personal injury: Inhalation Remove from source of exposure. If breathing stops or shows signs of failing apply artificial respiration. Use oxygen if breathing is laboured. Obtain medical help. Eyes Flood with water or eyewash for at least 15minutes. Obtain medical help. Skin Contact Remove contaminated clothing and flush affected area with tap water for at least 15 minutes. Treat patient as for inhalation. Obtain medical help. Ingestion- Wash out mouth with water. Treat as for inhalation. Obtain medical help.
