2 Welcome to a Culture of Safety! We want to help you work safely so you go home to your family in the same way you came to work. Safety is everyone s responsibility!
3 Purpose Help reduce the risk of potential injuries and accidents. Increase awareness of on the job safety hazards.
4 District Safety Motto: Safety is key in Dallas ISD Safety is Key in Dallas ISD was created by a talented Dallas ISD student who won the Risk Management Safety Motto Contest and his motto has been used ever since!
5 Our Safety Policy Our major safety policies (Board Policies) CK Local - SAFETY PROGRAM CKB Local - ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND REPORTS CKC Local - EMERGENCY PLANS
6 Your Role in Safety Familiarize yourself with the district safe work policies. Do not participate in horseplay or take shortcuts when performing your job. If unsure ask for instruction. Participate in safety training. Report any hazardous conditions to your supervisor. If you are involved in an accident or near miss, report it immediately to your supervisor.
7 Accident Prevention Prevention starts with awareness. If you know about the hazard, you can be better prepared to avoid and/or fix it. Be Pro-Active! Always maintain a safety attitude.
8 Human Behavior Common to all Accidents. Not limited to person involved in accident. Avoid unsafe behaviors that can result in injuries and accidents.
9 Falls aren t Funny
10 Slips, Trips, and Falls (STFs) STFs can happen anywhere. They can result in injuries, temporary or permanent disability, or death. Most could have been prevented. Common causes of STFs: Pencils, backpacks, power cords across the floors Clutter in walkways Wet floors Climbing Irregularities in walking surfaces Inattention
11 Office/Classroom Safety Keep your classroom and work area neat and clean. Good housekeeping is essential. Arrange your workstation to your individual needs. Maintain emergency exits free of obstruction. Keep backpacks/sweaters/books, etc., out of pathways. Keep drawers closed when not in use. Do not store heavy items on top shelves or overload filing cabinets. Keep 18-inch clearance between items on top shelf and the ceiling. Keep flammables away from hot office equipment. Avoid repetitive motions. Take breaks.
12 Fire/Emergency Preparedness Schools and departments conduct periodic emergency drills. You are expected to participate during the drills: Fire, lockdown, severe weather, shelter in place, reverse evacuation NEVER block an emergency exit or fire suppression device. Know location of fire alarms and fire extinguishers. Know at least two evacuation routes. Know meeting place outside the building. NEVER ignore a fire alarm. It can make the difference between life and death. Prevention is the best way to stop a fire
13 Electrical Safety Personal space heaters are NOT allowed. (District Policy CK Regulation) Keep clear access to electrical boxes. Do not overload outlets. Do not connect multiple extension cords one to another. Get a length appropriate extension. Large office equipment and appliances must be connected directly to the wall electrical outlet. Do not place electrical cords under rugs or heavy furniture. Discard any frayed or damaged cords.
14 Back Safety Back injuries are the leading cause of disability and the most costly. Size up the load and assess the route before lifting. Lift safely: Squat down next to the load Bend at the knees Face the load - don t twist your body Tighten your stomach, lift your head Lift gradually using your leg muscles and keeping the load as close to you as possible Keep load between your shoulders and waist. Do not overextend when reaching. Don t try to lift too much. Get help!
15 Ladder Safety Falls from ladders are usually preventable and most injuries can be avoided by following simple safety rules: Never place the ladder on an unstable surface, or on blocks or boxes to make it taller. Ensure the ladder is properly erected and secure. Do not use the last two rungs of the ladder. Find a ladder length appropriate for the job. Always face the ladder when climbing and descending. Keep your body within the side rails of the ladder. Never use a ladder that seems defective or broken. Always carry tools in a tool holster.
16 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Use the right equipment for the job. Inspect PPE before every use. Make sure PPE fits. Follow manufacturer s instructions. Clean and store properly. Do not use loose clothing or jewelry by a machinery.
17 Hazard Communication Employees have the right-to-know about hazardous chemicals they may be exposed to in the workplace and how to work safely while using them. Each hazardous chemical must have a Safety Data Sheet (SDSs) (formerly MSDSs). The SDS includes information such as: physical, health, and environmental health hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical. Safety Tips: Ensure chemical containers are labeled. Store incompatible chemicals separately. Use proper PPE. Follow safety procedures. Report any spills immediately. Seek immediate medical attention if exposed. Properly dispose of all chemical waste.
18 Machine Safety Tags are there for a reason, OBEY them. Make sure guards are in place. NEVER try to operate a machine that has been tagged. Report problems. Wear correct PPE. Focus on work.
19 Bloodborne Pathogens Universal Precaution: Treat all blood and body fluids as if they are infectious. ALWAYS wash hands immediately after any potential contact. Use precautions when giving first aid. Use PPE to prevent direct contact. Dispose of contaminated items appropriately. Warning labels must be affixed to containers of regulated waste. Clean up thoroughly. Get medical attention if you are exposed.
20 New Driver Requirements Before driving a district vehicle, new drivers must: Request driver approval through Risk Management Services. Complete driver safety orientation prior to driving a district vehicle, which consists of: Completion of an On-line Drivers Training. Policy Acknowledgement of Drug & Alcohol Testing Policy DHE Local and Legal. Policy Acknowledgment of District Driving Policies & Procedures DBA Regulation.
21 Safe Driving at Work and Home Inspect and maintain your vehicle. Wear your seat belt. Know driving hazards and conditions. Take extra precaution when backing up. Keep a safe distance of other vehicles. Use turn signals. Do not stop abruptly. Know how to respond to emergencies.
22 Workers Compensation First Report of Injury Office managers or the department designee must complete and submit the Employer s First Report of Injury through the provided web-based link below. The injured employee cannot complete the report. A password and user ID are needed to complete the information. If you need a password, user ID or assistance please contact Risk Management at Report injuries immediately to your supervisor. Contact Risk Management for a list of health care facilities.
