It s OK To Eat and Run Presented By: Paul Rosengard and Julie Frank The SPARK Programs SPARK-PE

Description: Physical activity AND nutrition? This session will show busy teachers how to accomplish both at the same time. Attendees will learn and play, "5 Servings Tag," "Healthy Choice," "Workout Buddies," and more. All are inclusive and enjoyable activities that reinforce nutrition concepts and promote healthy food choices while moving. Participants will leave with free, on-line access to lesson plans they can use on Monday, and the confidence to teach them! Content Outline: This session will have volunteers from the audience moving at different times during the session. Other time is allocated to viewing several powerpoints designed to set the stage and guide debriefing and processing. A number of multiple intelligences appealing to the variety of ways people learn will be integrated (i.e., kinesthetic, visual, etc.). A "this has been proven to work in the real world -- keep it practical" theme will be woven throughout, challenging attendees to run activities through their filters, "Are they good to go?" (Meaning, will this work as is at YOUR site with YOUR kids?) "Do they need modification?" (Like the concept and activity but need to change it for YOUR environment) or is it a "No thank you?" (Nice try, but because our district policy of we're unable to do that with our students.) This is an interactive experience inspiring attendees to play with colorful manipulatives and model a variety of activities exactly like they will with their students. Participants will leave with access to free, on line lesson plans and videoclips to further prepare them to use the information quickly and effectively.

ACTIVITY color tag GRADES K-2 Ready 4 cones (for boundaries) 1 hoop per student (at least 3 different hoop colors) 4 fluffballs 1 spot marker per student (at least 3 different colors optional) 1 deck of playing cards (optional) Set Create large (30X30 paces) activity area. Scatter hoops and students within area. Designate 4 students as It, and give 1 fluffball to each. GO! 1. The object of Color Tag is to avoid being tagged by the Its by dodging or standing in the safe color hoop. 2. On the music, fast walk (then gallop, side-slide, skip, run) within our boundaries, and avoid being tagged by the Its fluffball. 3. If you are tagged, take the fluffball and become an It. 4. Our 1 st safe color hoop is (blue). You may only stand in a (blue) hoop for a count of 3; then you have to leave. 5. More than 1 person can be in a safe hoop. 6. Each round, I will call a new color that will be safe that round. 7. (Play 2-3 minutes, then stop and change the color.) 8. Add 1 for Fun Instead of standing in your hoop, each round I ll give you something to do. This time, do 3 push-ups! (Change the task each round; e.g., 3 sit-ups, 3 jumping jacks, 3-second jog in place, 3 imaginary rope jumps, etc.) 9. Wrap It Up Who can tell us a strategy you used to avoid being tagged? There are 3 primary colors. These are the colors all other colors are made from. Who can name 1 of them? They happen to be the SPARK colors, too! games 5

ACTIVITY WORKOUT BUDDIES Ready... 4 cones (for boundaries) Sample Workout Buddies Activities Set... Create medium (20X20 paces) activity area. Pair students; scattered in area. GO! 1. The object is to have fun and be active with different Workout Buddies during class today. 2. On signal, find a buddy. This buddy is your buddy. (Fill in blank with activities on Sample Workout Buddies Activities). You will do that activity with this buddy. Anytime during PE, when you hear, Find your buddy, join them, and do that activity until the signal. 3. (Complete 1 Workout Buddies activity.) 4. Now, let s find a new Workout Buddy, and do a different activity. 5. (Complete 3-4 Workout Buddies activities during this lesson, and add others periodically throughout this unit.) CHALLENGES When I call an activity, can you find your buddy and get active before I count down from 5? COOPERATIVES CUES GRADES 3-6 Call your buddy s name while looking. Go to Lost and Found if you can t find your buddy. Safety first speed second. 5

Animal Adjectives Travel to find your Workout Buddy, like an elated elephant, agitated armadillo, lazy lion, happy hippo, perky penguin, cranky crocodile, goofy gorilla, etc. Add On (Allow partners to add 1, 2 or 3 activities to their initial partner Workout Buddies routine.) Travel Challenges (Challenge students to find their Workout Buddies, using a variety of locomotor patterns, pathways, and movement directions. For example, hopping forward in a zigzag pathway, tip-toe backward in a curved pathway, or slide sideways in a straight pathway.) Workout Buddies helps you commit to staying fit and healthy at home. Parents, brothers, sisters, friends, aunts and uncles make great Workout Buddies. Pet hamsters and goldfish do not! STANDARDS ADDRESSED NASPE #1 Various motor skills #4 Participation in fitness activities #5, 6 Communication/cooperation Your State (Write in here) TONY S TIPS This is great way to establish the routine of finding partners. Keep these buddies throughout the month, unit or year. Add more periodically. Remember to use them, so students don t forget them! If a buddy is absent, students come to a designated Lost and Found area to find another. If there is an odd number, you are a Workout Buddy, or students can work in 3s. NOTES 6
