2 POWER SAW SAFETY This easy-to-use Leader s Guide is provided to assist in conducting a successful presentation. Featured are: INTRODUCTION: A brief description of the program and the subject that it addresses. PROGRAM OUTLINE: Summarizes the program content. If the program outline is discussed before the video is presented, the entire program will be more meaningful and successful. PREPARING FOR AND CONDUCTING THE PRESENTATION: These sections will help you set up the training environment, help you relate the program to site-specific incidents, and provide program objectives for focusing your presentation. REVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: Questions may be copied and given to participants to document how well they understood the information that was presented. Answers to the review questions are provided separately. ATTENDANCE RECORD: Document the date of your presentation as well as identify the program participants. The attendance record may be copied as needed. INTRODUCTION The value of powered saw equipment is immeasurable. It saves time and effort while allowing materials to be cut and processed precisely and in a fraction of the time that it would take to use a manual saw. Another aspect of this equipment is that these saws are some of the most dangerous tools used in any industry. In a split second, a power saw can change your life forever. You must recognize and respect the power and destructive capabilities of this equipment. This video will show viewers how to operate power saws safely while stressing the importance of the individual accepting responsibility for his or her personal well being. Topics include PPE, saw inspection, use of guards, preventing kickbacks, electrical safety and good housekeeping. PROGRAM OUTLINE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Your employer provides you with the protective equipment needed to work safely, but it is your responsibility to wear it when it is required. Without exception, you must wear eye protection any time you use a power saw. A simple pair of safety glasses can mean the difference between just another day at work and a lifetime disability. You should wear leather-topped, steel-toed work boots. If a piece of wood falls off of the table, these will prevent a painful injury. Power saws create a lot of noise. Wear the appropriate hearing protection when operating this equipment. Gloves are useful for some tasks, but should never be worn when working around saws. They can be caught in the saw and drag your hand and arm into the cutting path. Long sleeves should be rolled up past the elbow. This prevents the material from getting caught in the moving parts of the saw. Long hair can also get caught in the blade and pull your entire face and head into the cutting path. If you have long hair, tie it back before using the saw.
3 INSPECTING THE SAW Before working with any saw, inspect it. You are the only person who can determine if the equipment is safe to use. If you find a hazard, do not use the saw. Notify your supervisor immediately so corrective action or repairs can be taken before an injury occurs. GUARDS & OTHER SAFETY EQUIPMENT Every saw is equipped with guards to protect the operator. Never remove, disable or tie back any guard on any saw. You may think that guards obstruct the view of the work or get in the way and this may be true, but consider the painful consequences that can occur when you tie back a guard. Know the location of each saw s emergency stop button. You will need to know where it is located before you need to use it. Always use a push stick when working with a table saw. In case the material slips or kicks back, the blade will cut the push stick and not your hand. Never release work until it has been pushed all the way through the blade. PREVENTING KICKBACKS Kickbacks on table saws can cause serious injuries, but they can be prevented using the following methods. Make sure the rip fence is parallel to the blade. Make sure the blade is sharp. If it gets dirty, clean it immediately. Kickback fingers should be sharp and installed properly. The spreader should be aligned with the blade. Never rip twisted or warped stock. OTHER SAFETY TIPS Portable saws should be securely fastened to the floor or bench to prevent creeping during use. Don t try to work too fast. We realize that work must be completed in a timely manner, but rushing through it is a primary cause of injury. Take your time and ensure a safe cut. Don t let noise or co-workers distract you. Keep your eyes and attention focused on the task at hand. One moment of inattention is all it takes to severely injure yourself or a co-worker. If the saw is plugged into an electrical outlet, make sure that the cord is in good shape without any frays, cracks or cuts. Check the plug to ensure all three prongs are present. A missing or damaged ground prong can result in a shock hazard. Make sure that the saw is in the off position before plugging it into a socket.
4 When changing the blade on a saw, be sure the saw is turned off and the tool is unplugged. If the equipment is hardwired in your facility, it should be locked and tagged out before changing the blade or performing any maintenance. These steps should never be overlooked. HOUSEKEEPING A messy, disorganized workplace is a disaster waiting to happen. Keep all equipment, floors and other areas clean and free of sawdust, wood particles and other debris. Good housekeeping prevents injuries and fires. Fires can occur while using a saw, so everyone should know where fire extinguishers are located and how to use them in case of an emergency.
5 PREPARE FOR THE SAFETY MEETING OR TRAINING SESSION Review each section of this Leader's Guide as well as the videotape. Here are a few suggestions for using the program: Make everyone aware of the importance the company places on health and safety and how each person must be an active member of the safety team. Introduce the videotape program. Play the videotape without interruption. Review the program content by presenting the information in the program outline. Copy the review questions included in this Leader's Guide and ask each participant to complete them. Copy the attendance record as needed and have each participant sign the form. Maintain the attendance record and each participant's test paper as written documentation of the training performed. Here are some suggestions for preparing your videotape equipment and the room or area you use: Check the room or area for quietness, adequate ventilation and temperature, lighting and unobstructed access. Check the seating arrangement and the audiovisual equipment to ensure that all participants will be able to see and hear the videotape program. Place or secure extension cords to prevent them from becoming a tripping hazard. CONDUCTING THE PRESENTATION Begin the meeting by welcoming the participants. Introduce yourself and give each person the opportunity to become acquainted if there are new people joining the training session. Explain that the primary purpose of the program is to explain safe work practices for the operation of power saws and how employees must assume responsibility for preventing injuries that involve this equipment. Introduce the videotape program. Play the videotape without interruption. Review the program content by presenting the information in the program outline. Lead discussions about dangerous situations or injuries that have occurred at your facility during the use of power saws and what could have been done to prevent them. Use the review questions to check how well the program participants understood the information. After watching the videotape program, the viewer will be able to explain the following: The importance of personal protective equipment required for power saw use; Saw inspection, use of guards and prevention of kickbacks; The significance of paying close attention and avoiding distractions when using power saws; The role of housekeeping in preventing power saw injuries.
