So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky By Amy Sampson-Cutler I absolutely love this quote by Terry Pratchett in the book, A Hat Full of Sky. It embodies why I love to go away after the winter season is over. When you spend as much time in one place like my family does, no matter how magical and wonderful the place is, it can start to feel, well, the same. We can take for granted how cool it is that we get to introduce so many people to such wonderful sports. Our job starts to feel like a job and it s easy to lose sight of what Mount Peter is really about. When I go away after a long season, to be honest, I m not sad to see the mountain in my rearview mirror. But always after a few days, some new idea will pop into my head. Or I will think of some project that we are about to start and feel the pull to get back to work. And sure enough, when I drive down our driveway and see the mountain, all of my good memories the ones that sometimes get shoved to the back corner of my mind come back to me; and I see our mountain with fresh eyes once again. That is how I see all of our friends and customers, as well. I love when people return year after year and always notice what we have done over the summer. Wow, you say, the place looks great. Mount Peter has spent so much time and money investing in our mountain that we are growing pretty quickly. We have some growing pains and we have some big plans on how to handle them. It takes time, of course, because we have learned over the years (we will be 82-years-old this winter, after all) that real change can only be upheld when you pace your budget. This summer, we will be busy putting in our new Quad Lift, which will let beginner and intermediate skiers and riders access more of the mountain. It will also help mountain school to expand the programs that we offer, and give families more options when it comes to getting everyone up the mountain at once. This is very exciting for us and a big deal, and I can t wait for the season to start so we can all take the first ride. We are also in the planning phase of a new five-year-plan, and we are dreaming big! While it certainly feels like we want to do everything in one year, we do know that these things take time, and year after year we will continue to plan and see the mountain with fresh eyes. I will always leave the mountain when a winter season ends. I have to, the transition is so difficult. I need to switch gears to go from dealing with the day to day job of helping to run a ski area to the daunting task of digging myself out of the paperwork that I put aside all winter. And then the real fun begins, cleaning and painting and working with marketing on new materials. And of course, always, planning for a great future at the mountain, and making sure that when you go away for the summer season, you will always see things with new eyes, and extra colors when you come back. A Big Heart By Hailey Richardson Spring 2017 I m growing up at Mount Peter Ski Area. I have been for the past twelve years. Yes, we re a little mountain but we have a big heart. My life so far has been filled with laughter, joy, sweat and tears. Yes it s hard to live at a ski area, but every second of hard work is worth it. Seeing this season end was terrible, and believe it or not we all get the end of the season blues. Living here is amazing seeing families off their phones and on the mountain, having fun and being themselves, is great. NEW QUAD LIFT #mountpeteradventures

Now a family of four can ride the chair together, and we can expand our mountain school to accommodate taking more than one skier or rider up the lift in a lesson. It s going to be great. We are brewing up a five-year-plan and we are dreaming big the new lift is just step one, so stay tuned.

Senior citizens 70 yrs. as of 12/1/17, there is a $20 processing fee; payment may be made with check or cash. 6 Page 6 Cafe Staff Fundraiser For The Warwick Animal Shelter By Samantha Capezza Cafeteria Manager How many ski resorts can state they have the most generous and caring customers? Mount Peter can! Every year Mount Peter s cafeteria staff fundraises for a different organization. This year we have chosen the Warwick Valley Humane Society. With the help of animal loving customers, we raised more than $3,000! This money can go a long way for the humane society, which can welcome approximately 350 dogs and cats a year! The Humane Society doesn t just stop at cats and dogs, currently the Warwick Humane Society has roosters, doves and even bunnies! Caring for this many animals, at all stages of life, can get costly. Mount Peter s cafeteria staff is proud to donate this money, thanks to the amazing generosity and support of our customers! 7 The Mountain Times Page 7 Instructors Pass Level One Exam On March 11th and 12th fifteen instructors from Mount Peter took their Level 1 Exam for PSIA-E-AASI (Professional Ski Instructors of America -Eastern Division and American Association of Snowboard Instructors) and two instructors took their PSIA Level 1 Children s Specialty Examination. PSIA-E-AASI is the world s largest organization dedicated to teaching people how to ski and snowboard. National certifications are badges of honor that symbolize credibility and expertise. Certified instructors train and clinic regularly; they have valuable insights to share from their on snow experiences. Congratulations to all! The West Point Ski Team carried the US Flag down the mountain to the Minisink High School ROTC Color Guard. The days events included tubing, skiing and riding, two local bands (Spitball Parade and Chemical Catastrophe) and giveaways! A great time for all! HERoes In Deed is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2014 by Elizabeth Harman in memory of her sister and Warwick native, Jaimie Leonard, a lieutenant colonel in the US Army who was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 8, In 2010 Jaimie wrote a letter about Memorial Day in which she urged her fellow citizens to honor in deed those who have sacrificed by serving their country. The mission of HERoes In Deed is to bring communities together in service with the veterans who live there to create lasting relationships that honor our military heroes and improve the community as a whole.
