2 George Brooks Head Coach 35th Season New Mexico ( 70) Head Coach George Brooks Good things come to those who wait. No one knows that feeling better than New Mexico s head ski coach George Brooks. For 34 years, Brooks guided Lobo skiers to All-American honors, individual titles and event titles at the NCAA Championships. However, each year the overall team championship slipped through the Lobos paws. In 1992, UNM placed second, which was the best showing at any NCAA Championship by any Lobo team. Remarkably, every year since 1982 New Mexico finished in the top ten, but every year Brooks had to watch another team take home the first place trophy. That all changed in 2004 when Brooks guided UNM to the first NCAA title in school history. Brooks is heading into his 35th year at the helm of the UNM Ski Team, a tenure that has outlasted any other member of the UNM athletics department. During that time, he has worked under nine university presidents and seven athletic directors. Initially a club sport prior to 1970, the UNM Ski Team has been molded into a consistently competitive and nationallyranked program. In the 34 years that Brooks has coached at New Mexico, his teams have placed in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships 21 times, including the school s first ever national title in A 55-year old native of Taos, New Mexico, home of some of the best ski areas in the world, Brooks enthusiasm for the sport of skiing spans back to his days as a varsity athlete participating for New Mexico. Since coaching at New Mexico, Brooks has coached more than 75 athletes to All-American status on over 100 different occasions. He has also coached over 100 skiers to Academic All-American honors and all-conference awards. New Mexico has eight Alpine team championships (women s Slalom in 1979, 1996, and 2002, women s Giant Slalom in 1977 and men s slalom in 1996, 1997 and 2004, and men s Giant Slalom in 1998), six Nordic team champions, six Nordic individual champions and three Alpine individual champions at the NCAA Championships. Most recently, Jennifer Delich won the 2004 women s giant slalom National Championship while the women s Nordic Team took home the 5K Freestyle Team National Championship and the men s Alpine squad won the Slalom Team Championship in Brooks serves on numerous national ski committees and was chosen as the coach for the United States Ski Team at the World University Games in 1983, , 1993, , and in Brooks served as chair of the United Ski Association Collegiate Ski Committee from Brooks also served as the delegate from the United States to the Federation of International Skiing (FIS) from Brooks has recently completed his eighth year on the NCAA Rules committee, three years of which he spent as the committee s chairperson. Brooks is also a member of the New Mexico Ski Hall of Fame. Brooks earned his bachelor s degree in Political Science/History in 1970 and went on to earn his master s in Sports Physiology at UNM. Brooks is married to Debbie Dixon of Albuquerque. The couple has three children: Andrew (25), Casey (22) and Cristi (20). 13

3 Head Coach George Brooks Academic All-Americans There have been over 100 Lobo skiers receive Academic All- American awards under Coach Brooks. National Titles Brooks has coached 23 nine individual national champions and 14 alpine and nordic team national champions during his career at UNM. All-Conference Coach Brooks has guided 123 skiers to all-conference awards in his 33 years at UNM. All-Americans There have been 123 All-American awards given to 75 different skiers, including two-time winners 10 three-time winners, and 3 four-time winners during Brooks career. U.S. Ski Team Head Coach Coach Brooks has guided the U.S. Ski 9 Team at the World University Games on 9 different occasions, including 1983, , 1993, 1995 and Coach Brooks was a 3-time CIAL All-Conference Alpine skier at UNM from He was also a twotime team MVP in 1970 and Career at UNM Brooks head coaching career at UNM has spanned 35 years, longer than any other member of the UNM athletics department. Top-10 Finishes The Lobos have finished in the Top-10 in overall team competition 21 times under Brooks, including UNM s first NCAA Championship in any sport in Academic Achievement Last season the Ski Team extended its streak to 17 years having the highest G.P.A. among all athletic teams at UNM. 14

4 Nordic Coach Fredrik Landstedt Fredrik Landstedt Nordic Coach 8th Season New Mexico ( 91) Fredrik Landstedt is in his eighth season as the Nordic coach with the Lobos. Last season, Landstedt coached the Nordic women to their second straight NCAA Nordic Freestyle Championships, while helping the Lobos win their first ever NCAA team title. During his short time at UNM he has coached 15 Lobos to 22 All-American awards, two individual national championships and three team national titles. Prior to coming to UNM, Landstedt coached at the University of Colorado for three years where he won an NCAA National Championship. Before moving to Colorado he coached the West Valley High School ski team in Fairbanks, Alaska, to two state team titles. Landstedt also served as an assistant coach in New Mexico prior to his move to Alaska. During his skiing days, Landstedt was a top national skier and placed in the top-10 in the U.S. National Championships eight times between Landstedt was one of the top collegiate skiers in the nation while competing at the University of New Mexico, earning All- American status after he finished fourth in the NCAA Championships in As a young ski racer in Sweden, Landstedt took three medals in the Swedish Junior Championships and finished in the top-20 in many National races as a senior racer. Originally from Solleftea, Sweden, Landstedt graduated from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor s degree in Economics in 1991 and an associate degree in Accounting/Bookkeeping in Landstedt is currently working on his master s degree in Business as well as coordinating a New Mexico Nordic race series and New Mexico State Championships to help raise interest in Nordic skiing in New Mexico. Currently, Landstedt is serving as the President of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association. Landstedt and his wife, Brenda, have three sons, Gabriel (9), Adrian (7) and Andreas (3). Landstedt prepares for another race last season. The Lobo women won the freestyle team title at the NCAA Championships in 2004 for the second year in a row under his direction. Landstedt was both an NCAA All-American and an All-RMISA Nordic skier for the Lobos from

5 Assistant Coaches Brandon Dyksterhouse Asst. Alpine Coach 2nd Season Vermont ( 00) Brandon Dyksterhouse is entering his second season of collegiate coaching as a member of the Lobo coaching staff. Dyksterhouse is a former NCAA giant slalom champion from the University of Vermont and was a U.S. Ski Team invitee. He made an immediate impact on the Lobos, helping UNM win its first team title in school history in his first season. Dyksterhouse helped the Lobos win the 2004 men s slalom team championship and also was a major factor in Jennifer Delich s 2004 women s giant slalom individual title. Dyksterhouse graduated from Vermont in 2000 after a stellar career with the Catamounts. He won the NCAA men s giant slalom title in 1997 and was a threetime all-american at UVM. He earned a degree in Business with a Marketing concentration from Vermont in While at Vermont, Dyksterhouse was a four-year letterwinner and captain of the ski team during his senior season. Prior to coming to U N M, Dyksterhouse trained and traveled with the U.S. Ski Team as an invitee. He is currently pursuing a master s degree in Sports Administration at UNM. Three -Time All-American 1997 NCAA Giant Slalom Champion Olof Hedberg Asst. Nordic Coach 1st Season Mid Sweden ( 03) Olof Hedberg is entering his first season as an assistant Nordic coach. He graduated in 2003 from Mid Sweden University with a degree in Business with a finance concentration. Hedberg spent the previous school year studying Medicine at The Nordic Ski Academy of Umea University. At UNM, Hedberg is a graduate student working towards a M.B.A. in Finance at Robert O. Anderson school. Last season Hedberg placed 17th in the Swedish nationals, and won three state championships in the 15k, 30k and sprint. He also finished 11th overall in the Swedish Sprint Cup. As a result Hedberg was named the Best skier in State for the season. Hedberg also received a state-award for outstanding academic performance during the last year. Hedberg brings tremendous international racing experience to the team. His skills and knowledge about technic, tactics, and speed will be a great resource to the Lobo Nordic squad. 16
