Staff: Mr. Crichton Mrs. Stevenson Mr. Pittam Groups: These groups will be for checking purposes. Whenever we all gather together, pupils should go to their group leader and stay with them until they have reported to members of staff that their entire group is present. Group One Mrs Stevenson Grace Atkins Charlie Barnett Poppy Bristoll Nyall Brown Carlie Brown Morgan Cattell Richard Chan Group Two Mr Crichton Joshua Mossman Jessica Pitchford Joshua Postans James Pritchard Jack Stones Joshua Walker Rhys Williams Group Three Mr Pittam Emily Gough Ruby Hancox Leah Hyde Lewis Jones Michael Land Jamie Lewis Haydn Morrow Identity Cards: All pupils will be issued with Identity Cards when they get on the coach on the 18 th February. These need to be carried with them all the time. 2

The Journey: The journey is very long. It can be enjoyable if we all think of each other, but can be tedious if a few people are selfish. Packs of cards and quiz books help to pass the time. ipods/mobile phones are excellent ways to listen to your own taste in music, but must be played at a level which does not disturb anyone else. If someone else can hear a hiss the volume is too high. When you are singing away to your favourite tracks please think of others! Staff cannot be responsible for the safe keeping of any of the above items and at no time should they be taken on the slopes. Everyone should remember that in Europe they drive on the right and great care should be taken leaving the coach when crossing the road. What to wear: Comfortable, sensible, casual clothes, plus your ski jacket. The ski jacket can act as a blanket if you are cold on the coach and be stored overhead in the plane when not needed. A pair of ordinary gloves is often useful on the journey because you never know how cold it is going to be. Trainers are suitable footwear as they give a reasonable grip if the ground should be icy. Travel Sickness: If you are likely to be slightly sick or queasy please make sure we know and ensure that you take medication before we depart and as necessary from then on. Fizzy drinks are not recommended!! Food: We leave school at 5.30AM Saturday 18 th February and will not have a meal in the hotel until Saturday evening. 1. Breakfast: please try to eat before leaving home Saturday morning or if it s too early, bring it with you. 2. Lunch: the flight will depart at 12.20, so you should plan to eat a packed lunch during the flight. Remember, you cannot take liquids through security, so you may have to buy a drink in the airport departure lounge. 3. In the UK you will need s. In Italy and France, you will need Euros however, the coach does not usually stop between the airport and the hotel. Please no glass bottles at all, for safety reasons. Large bottles of drinks are rather a nuisance as they have a tendency to spill. We recommend small cartons or plastic bottles. 3

Ski Clobber: If you have hired items from Sub32 they must be returned to the Finance Office on Monday 27 th February your first day back to school. Items should be returned in the original carrier bag with your name on the outside. Please do not attempt to clean or wash these items. You should be careful if using coloured zinc sun creams as these can stain clothing permanently. When all items have been returned Sub 32 will arrange collection of them from school. Sunglasses and Goggles, Ski Gloves / Mittens and Helmets: You must wear these when skiing, and goggles are necessary for all pupils in addition to sunglasses. If you normally wear glasses ensure that your goggles fit comfortably over them before the holiday. Check that sunglasses are securely attached to you, if you have a fall while skiing glasses do have a tendency to carry on down the mountain without you! You are not allowed to ski without helmet and gloves (or mittens). Loose clothing: Scarves and loose flying items are dangerous and should not be worn. If these bits get caught in lifts and chairs you may have a problem getting on or off. Sun creams: Sun burn and cracked lips can ruin the whole holiday. Please ensure that sun creams are suitable for high altitude skiing. We would recommend factor You may tan easily in summer but you must use cream every day and top it up regularly. Fair skinned pupils may opt for a Total Block sun cream. Specialist lip salve is essential. Ski Equipment: In case we are fitted with our equipment before unpacking please pack a pair of ski socks in your hand luggage. All items will be booked out to you individually and clearly named. You must only ever use your own equipment; this will have been fitted to your size, weight and ability. To use equipment belonging to someone else can be extremely dangerous. Never put your equipment down and wander off. Remember exactly where you put it when you stop for lunch. When there are 400 skis outside the restaurant it can be a little difficult to find yours if you can t remember where you put them! Stand your skis up in the snow and hook your poles over your skis never just leave them at the edge of the piste. If you have any problems with your ski equipment you must tell Mr Crichton as soon as possible. Problems mentioned at the end of the day can be sorted before skiing the next day, don t leave it until we are about to go up in the lift the next morning. If your boots are uncomfortable don t suffer in silence, tell any member of staff! 4

Ski School: Mr. Crichton will arrange the ski groups after discussion with the ski instructors. On the first day everyone may have to ski a very simple slope in order for the instructors to assess their ability. Mr. Crichton will meet each morning with the instructors to discuss any relevant matters. The Ski Instructors have always been excellent. They are in charge during ski school and all students must follow their instructions exactly. We will have 5 hours of lessons each day with a break for lunch. The day can be exhausting so sleep at night is essential! Ski instructors will grade each pupil during the week s lessons and will issue a certificate at the end of the week. There may be a chance to enter a time trial race at the end of the week. These are run on prepared slopes and timed through starting and finishing gates just like the Olympics, and in response to the annual question, No, you don t all race down the slope together, you go one at a time!. Skiing: Skiing is classed as a dangerous activity and therefore: pupils are reminded that they are only allowed to ski when under the direct supervision of the Ski School Instructors. This is a County directive and one which we feel is essential for the wellbeing of the pupils. Any pupil who disregards this ruling may well be prevented from skiing. The pistes are groomed to be as safe as possible for the skiers, signs and instructions are there for a purpose; but everybody must be aware of guidelines set down for their own safety and the safety of others. They should also take care not to cause problems for anyone else on the slopes. What starts as a little fun could be the cause of a nasty accident. Quote from the insurance policy: You must exercise reasonable care to prevent accident, injury, loss or damage. Carrying skis: When walking a distance, they should be clipped together and carried on one shoulder with the curved ends facing forwards. The hand on that side supports the skis. Ski poles should both be held in the opposite hand. When moving up stairs or towards a gondola lift they should be clipped together and carried in an upright position with the curved ends at the top. Carry the poles in the opposite hand. 5

Storage of equipment: Skis, boots and poles will be stored at the hotel. Instructions as to how they are to be stored should be followed closely. Members of staff will direct operations! Lift Pass: Please check each morning that you have your lift pass with you, loss of a pass is extremely expensive. Your lift pass should be placed in a secure pocket and left in there for the week. Most ski jackets now have a sleeve pocket for the lift pass. You will not be able to go up to the slopes without your pass. Accidents on the piste: If there is an accident on the piste then the instructor will tell you what to do. Usually they will stick crossed skis in the snow above the accident to warn other skiers and to identify where the injured person is for anyone involved in rescue or First Aid. Other members of the group should follow instructions, but keep out of the way of other skiers. In the event of an injury occurring on the piste 1. The ski instructor will make an initial assessment they are First Aid trained 2. If necessary, they may call Piste Rescue who will make a further assessment. 3. If necessary, the injured person may be evacuated from the slopes this may be by sledge, skidoo or helicopter. Piste Rescue will decide. 4. It is important to realise that the member of Idsall staff skiing with the group may not be able to travel off the mountain with the injured student. They will be told where the injured person is being taken. 5. All members of Idsall staff will liaise via mobile phone with each other, the Equity Rep. and the hotel and the nearest adult (not required to supervise the other students) will join the injured student as soon as possible. Snowballing: It is always a great temptation to have a snowball fight but there are times and places for these. Pupils should definitely not snowball each other anywhere on the pistes or near the lifts and restaurants. If someone is hit by frozen snow and injured they can make a claim off you and cause an unpleasant scene. Similarly, if you are having a rest and throw a snowball, which hits a skier, you can be the cause of a serious accident. Insurance: As with most insurance policies there is an excess for medical treatment. We will pay this for a child in the first instant, but will then ask you to repay us on our return home. The excess is approximately Other costs over and above the excess may be claimed on the insurance policy. 6

10 SAFETY RULES 1 2 I do not put others in danger. 3 4 I control my speed at all times. Everyone below me has priority. 5 6 I keep my distance when overtaking. At the start /at an intersection of a slope, I ensure that I am not in anyone s way. 7 I avoid stopping in the middle of the slope. If I fall, I move out of the way quickly. 8 If I have to climb up, I always use the edge of the slope. 9 I check the weather and the condition of the slopes. I respect signposts and slope markings. 10 In case of an accident, I raise the alarm and remain available for the rescue team. As a witness to an accident, I present myself to the rescue team. 7

First Aid / Medicines: All medicines must be handed to Staff on arrival in France. All medicines must be clearly labelled with your name and with very clear instructions about the doses. Remember that those pupils who may need to take a paracetamol must bring their own - as long as their parents have signed the consent form. Pupils may like to carry their own first aid kit, but should always let a member of staff know before they treat themselves, especially with blisters. A badly placed plaster can often cause more problems than the original blister. If a pupil feels at all unwell they must let a member of staff know as soon as possible. If necessary staff will take pupils to the local Doctor. Asthma: Those pupils who suffer from asthma, however mild, must keep their inhalers with them throughout the trip, and in particular on the slopes when skiing. The high altitude can sometimes adversely affect those with asthma, so it is better to be prepared. Dehydration: Be sensible you will be active, at altitude, for much of the day. Drink plenty of water. This is freely available at the Hotel and jugs of water are on the tables at meals. 8

Cameras: If you are taking your camera with you please make sure it is clearly labelled with your name, the ski group and the hotel. Pocket money: The pupils will not need much money each day enough for sweets, snacks, soft drinks and perhaps presents. We would suggest approx.. 10 Euros per day ( Euros max.). You will need to change your money into EUROS before you go. Then place it in an envelope in your suitcase for the journey. On arrival in the hotel, staff will set up an Idsall Bank and keep the money secure for you. Pupils will be told in advance at what time staff will be handing out pocket money. We cannot accept any responsibility for money not handed in to Idsall Bank. Pupils are responsible for any money they may keep in their rooms. Evening Entertainment: Entertainment will be available in the evening such as a DVD Night, Karaoke, Quiz and Games Night. We will not know the plan for the week until we arrive. Presents: We will try to arrange for the pupils to have access to French goods if they wish to buy presents. Knives are not to be bought by anyone as the police and customs will consider them to be offensive weapons. Unfortunately in the current climate the authorities may well treat anyone carrying a knife and other prohibited items rather harshly. Contact with home: Most pupils will want to ring home as soon as possible. They will be very busy on the first day and also very tired, it is often better that they wait until after the first day of skiing before talking to you. If you wish to ring us at the hotel please be aware that we are usually out! If you have a problem at home it is perhaps a good idea to ask for one of the staff in the first instance. Smoking: Idsall and the Hotel have a no smoking policy and this will be enforced on the ski trip. Alcohol: Alcohol will not be consumed by students on school trips. Alcohol miniatures are freely available in shops and cafes, but pupils should not be tempted to buy them as pupils are under the legal age. 9

Luggage: Suitcase: Each person is allowed one case of a reasonable size, which you must be able to carry yourself. Maximum weight of 20kg Small Rucksack: Each pupil is allowed hand luggage which they can use on the ski slopes for clothing, a drink and snacks. Small does really mean that, as the bag has to be stored in the overhead rack or under the seat. Maximum weight 5kg Labelling: Please label all your luggage clearly with: Front of label Your name Equity Travel Club Hotel Le Morgan, 7 Les Chalps, Risoul, France Back of label Your name Your home address in full Please put a label inside your suitcase along with a list of what you packed PACKING: So what do I need? This is just to act as a guide. In your hand luggage. Wallet / purse One pair of ski socks (important) Currency Glasses if worn Mobile phone (music/games) and earphones Camera Packed lunch (and breakfast) Snacks Medicines for the journey (packed in a plastic bag) Liquids, creams, makeup, perfume, medicines to be handed in and sharp objects such as nail scissors or tweezers must be packed in the checked suitcase and not in hand luggage. 10

In your suitcase: We suggest you use this as a checklist and put it in your case then you can check everything off when you pack on the last day. Several thin layers are more suitable for skiing than one very thick layer. SKI CLOTHES: OTHERS: Salopettes/ski trousers [ ] Scarf (not for skiing) [ ] Jacket [ ] Towel & Soap [ ] Helmet [ ] Slippers/Trainers [ ] Ski Gloves/Mittens/Hat [ ] Other socks [ ] Ski clips [ ] Underclothes [ ] Goggles [ ] Nightwear [ ] Sunglasses [ ] Casual clothes [ ] Lip salve [ ] *Hairdryer / adapter [ ] Ski socks (at least 2 prs.)[ ] Toiletries [ ] Warm underwear [ ] First Aid [ ] Shirts / polos [ ] Sewing Kit [ ] Fleece [ ] Alarm Clock [ ] Sun cream [ ] Information sheets [ ] Rucksack (Hand luggage) [ ] Spare glasses if worn [ ] Pocket Money [ ] Boots or similar [ ] The hotel does not provide towels or soap for students so please make sure you pack them. *We suggest you get together with friends and agree to share hairdryers and electrical items, Remember, you need an adaptor. Arrival in France When we arrive at the hotel we will use the telephone cascade in order to let everyone know. Skiing in Risoul Risoul 1850 is a modern ski station at the top of a winding road up from the original village of Risoul. It partners with neighbour Vars to form the Forêt Blanche ski domain, located between the Queyras and Écrins national parks. It is sometimes called Risoul 1850 because it is 1850m above sea level. 11
