1 This Week Utah Heads to Montana for The Utes return to Bohart Ranch and Bridger Bowl, Mont., for the 2008 NCAA Ski Championships, hosted by Montana State University. Utah will have a full 12-skier roster for the second consecutive season and will be the only Western school to field a full team. Eastern schools Middlebury and Dartmouth also have full teams. Utah has 16 eligible skiers, but only 12 can compete, per NCAA rules. To qualify 16 people from our team is a statement to our depth, said Eli Brown, Director of Skiing. It s a huge advantage to us to have a full team because we have more chances to score points. It s great not to have to deal with the extra pressure of having less skiers. We are excited about this year s championships. We have gotten through the season as one of the top teams, but the is a whole new game. We also hold an advantage over the East teams because we competed on the NCAA hill just last weekend at the Western Regionals. It was a good opportunity for our athletes to become familiar with the NCAA courses. Last season, the Utah finished fourth at the. Then-freshman Snorri Einarsson led the Utes with a first-place finish in the 20-km Classic and a second-place finish in the 10-km Freestyle. Ski Racing magazine has picked the Utes to win the 2008 championship, noting that the team has podium contenders in all alpine and races. Utah has traditionally competed well in Bozeman. The last three times the championship has been held there, the Utes won the title in 1996 and finished second in 1998 and Last Time Out Utah turned in a second-place finish at the NCAA West Regional in Bohart Ranch and Bridger Bowl, Mont. The men s alpine team led the way on Friday with three skiers (Scott Veenis, 4th; Kyle Kung, 7th; Thomas Zumbrunn, 9th) placing in the giant slalom top-10. Snorri Einarsson was fifth in the 10-km Freestyle while Even Sletten was ninth. In women s GS, Chirine Njeim finished eighth. On Saturday, Einarsson again stepped up to lead the team, posting a second-place finish in the 20-km Classic. Annelies Cook and Sara Schweiger also impressed in the 15-km Classic, posting fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively. In alpine, Zumbrunn finished third in the slalom, with Scott Veenis placing fourth. Mikaela Grassl was fifth in women s slalom.
