The BOA goggle is an advanced ballistic goggle originally designed for the military user. The modular concept consists of a basic goggle, made of advanced materials, with a 2mm thick ballistic lens that has a scratch-resistant coating. Reduced eye-to-lens clearance yields improved interface with optical sighting equipment. The goggle retention strap, available in a standard version, a lightweight version, or a ski version, may be configured for use with Personal Armor System Ground Troops (PASGT), Combat Vehicle Crew (CVC), or Advanced CVC (ACVC) helmets, or the Tactical Ballistic Helmet (TBH). The goggle accepts a prescription snap-in frame for users who require corrective eyewear. Description 1 STANDARD STRAP LIGHT- WEIGHT STRAP SKI STRAP Figure 1

2 Description BOA goggles (Figure 2) are composed as follows: 1A Standard retention strap or 1B Lightweight retention strap or 1C Ski strap 2 Prescription lens carrier (optional) 3 Goggle body 4 Ballistic lenses (clear and neutral), described on Pages 3 and 4 5 Carrying case 6 Anti-fog kit (configuration specific) A 3 4 1B 1C Figure 2

Description 3 Lenses and Their Protection Lenses (Figure 3) can be identified as follows: Clear: Colorless with a curved edge. Neutral: Dark gray with a curved edge Laser: Available upon customer request. (Not shown) All three types of lenses provide ballistic protection. In addition, the neutral lens provides protection from sun glare. CLEAR LENS Figure 3 NEUTRAL LENS

4 Description LASER LENS WARNINGS If lased, do not stare at the laser source. Some lasers have additional wavelengths that may not be filtered by these lenses and may cause eye damage. Laser lenses are not intended to protect against bright light. Do not use to view solar eclipses, electrical welding, torch welding, cutting, or other potentially damaging light sources. Laser protection levels may be reduced if used with binoculars or any magnifying sighting devices. Laser lenses are not to be used as a substitute for any other types of laser eye protection during maintenance or servicing of specific laser systems. Specific eye protection should be as specified by the appropriate technical manual. Laser lenses block some colors. Therefore, charts and indicator lights may appear differently.

The standard strap allows the goggle to be draped at the chest level when not in use. As shown in Figure 4, the standard-strap goggle may be configured for use with: (1) the ground troop PASGT helmet, (2) the TBH helmet, or (3) the CVC helmet. The standard-strap goggle may also be used without a helmet. The overhead strap is used in configurations (1) and (2) only, and the installation procedure is the same for configurations (1) and (2). When not in use, the overhead strap may be stored in the carrying case. Standard Strap Configurations 5 Figure 4

6 Lightweight Strap Configurations When the lightweight strap is used, the goggles cannot be draped at chest level. As shown in Figure 5, the lightweight-strap goggle may be configured for use with: (1) the ground troop PASGT helmet, (2) the TBH helmet, (3) the CVC helmet, or (4) the ACVC helmet. The lightweight-strap goggle may also be used without a helmet. The overhead strap is used in configurations (1) and (2) only, and the installation procedure is the same for configurations (1) and (2). When not in use, stow the overhead strap in the carrying case. Figure 5

When the ski strap is used, the goggles cannot be draped at chest level. As shown in Figure 6, the ski-strap goggle may be configured for use with: (1) the ground troop PASGT helmet, (2) the TBH helmet, (3) the CVC helmet, or (4) the Advanced CVC (ACVC) helmet. The ski-strap goggle may also be used without a helmet. Installation procedures are the same for configurations (1) and (2). The ski strap does not have an overhead strap. 35 Installing / Removing Prescription Lens Carrier (If Used) 31 The frame of the BOA goggles accommodates a specially manufactured snap-in Prescription Lens Carrier (PLC). This PLC fits behind the protective lenses of the BOA; two projections on the front of the PLC snap into the corresponding slots on the BOA frame. The BOA-compatible PLC, along with the necessary prescription lenses, should be ordered through the unit s/individual s local optometry clinic in the same manner regular prescription eyeglasses are obtained. The military optical fabrication labs will order the PLC (NSN ) from the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia s Directorate of Medical Materiel (S9M). The military optometry clinics will, in turn, order the PLCs complete with prescription lenses from the military optical fabrication labs.

32 Installing/Removing Prescription Lens Carrier (If Used) 1. The carrier is held in place by the two projections which catch on a bracket inside the goggle. To install the prescription lens carrier, press down on the flexible nose bridge until it snaps into place at the interface point in the center of the goggles as shown in Figure 30(A). NOTE: If the prescription carrier sticks out of the rubber frame, carefully press its sides into place against the inside of the goggle lens. 2. To remove the prescription lens carrier, grasp one end of the carrier as shown in Figure 30(B) and pull it away from the bracket until it pops out. A Figure 30 B

1. Referring to the inset in Figure 31, release the two latches at the bottom of the goggle frame, and remove the lens by pushing the bottom edge out. 2. To insert the replacement lens into the goggle frame, position the top edge of the goggle under the tabs at the top of the frame. Then roll the bottom of the lens into place. 3. Fasten the latches at the bottom of the frame by rotating them to the locked position. 4. When not in use, the lenses may be stored in the carrying case. Replacing Lens 33 RELEASING LATCH Figure 31 TABS

34 Replacing Standard or Lightweight Strap 1. On one side of the goggle, use a jeweler's screwdriver to remove the screws attaching the strap retainer to the goggle. (See Figure 32.) Repeat for the other side of the goggle. 2. Obtain a replacement strap. 3. Place the end of the replacement strap against the side of the goggle as shown in Figure 32, and reattach the strap retainer with the two screws removed in Step 1. Repeat for the other side of the goggle. GOGGLE STRAP Figure 32 SCREWS STRAP RETAINER

Repeat for the other side of the goggle. GOGGLE STRAP RETAINER Figure 33 STRAP SCREWS

36 Cleaning and Care Rinse the screen filters in clean water, and allow to air dry. Figure 34 shows the location of the screen filters on one side of the goggle; the other side also has these filters. NOTE: Screen filters are not removable from the goggle. (Continued on next page) Figure 34 SCREEN FILTERS SCREEN FILTERS

Cleaning and Care 37 Lenses without permanently applied anti-fog coating: To clean the lens, use the anti-fog solution and a soft, clean cloth (a special cleaning cloth is provided under the strap of the carrying case of a new system). Alternately, the lenses and frame may be cleaned with a soft, clean cloth dampened with water. Use a mild soap-and-water solution, if necessary, to remove grease or other stubborn dirt. Lenses with permanently applied anti-fog coating: To clean the lens, use a lint-free cloth or tissue moistened with isopropyl alcohol. A convenient method is to use pre-packaged alcohol wipes. (Continued on next page)

38 Storage of Components Store the unused lens in the outer sleeve (Figure 35). Store the use and care instructions in the inner sleeve (Figure 35) when not in use. If you have a laser lens and are not using it, store the laser lens in the inner sleeve. When all unused lenses are stored, close the case. Referring to Figure 35, use the straps on the back of the carrying case to attach it to clothing as directed by your commanding officer. OUTER SLEEVE Figure 35 INNER SLEEVE STRAPS
