1 Huntingtower Year 9 Alpine Challenge May 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians To further extend the challenge aspect of the Year 9 program, students have the opportunity of attending a Ski trip in The camp offers a chance to many students to try something new and is an opportunity to challenge them in a different environment to which they ve been exposed this year. Excursion to: Activity: Falls Creek Downhill skiing or snow boarding Date: July, 2015 Accommodation: Departure Time: Return Time: Clothing: Halley s Lodge, Falls Creek Be at school at 8.00am for an 8.25am departure Approximately 9.00pm, Friday 31 July Students can arrive at school in casual clothing. Please see attached sheet for packing suggestions. Meal Arrangements: Packed lunch for day one (or money for McDonald s). All other meals are covered in the cost associated with the camp. Cost: Night Skiing - $19.00 (compulsory, charged to student account) Other costs are covered within the student fees. These include: accommodation, meals, transport, lift tickets, mountain entry, 4x lessons, ski/snowboard hire (incl. helmet), wrist guards (if snowboarding). If students have indicated they wish to hire jacket and pants, or purchase gear, then additional costs will be incurred. Special Requirements: Students can arrive at school in casual clothing. It is highly recommended that all students have ambulance cover due to the activity and location. 2 PERMISSION FORM Alpine Experience Year July, 2015 I give permission for my son/daughter to attend the Year 9 Ski Camp, as set on the attached sheet. (full name). In the event of illness or injury to my child whilst at school, on an excursion, or travelling to or from school; I authorise the Principal or teacher in charge of my child, where the Principal or teacher in charge is unable to contact me, or if it is otherwise impracticable to contact me to: Administer such first aid as the Principal or staff member may judge to be reasonably necessary Consent to my child receiving such medical or surgical attention as may be deemed necessary by a medical practitioner. Consent to and understand that I will be responsible for any costs incurred if an ambulance needs to be called. Due to organisational requirements, I understand that if this form and payment (if required) are not returned by the due date my child will not be able to attend the above activity. Parents/Guardians are welcome to contact the class teacher and make other arrangements if unable to have the forms/money returned by the due date. In addition, I understand that alpine activities comprise inherent dangers, and that students may be skiing or snowboarding without close or direct supervision at times during the excursion. Supervision and safety strategies will be in place that include, but are not limited to: students participating in small groups (4 min.), staff skiing with or near students wherever possible, lessons with suitably qualified instructors each morning and discussions relating to the Alpine Responsibility Code. 3 Student Equipment List Alpine Experience July, 2015 Preparations have already begun for ski camp and the next step is to ensure the students have the proper equipment. Below is a list of clothing and equipment required for ski camp. It is important to have woollen or synthetic garments under your ski gear. Students often get wet, and cotton clothing can cause hypothermia. Extra clothing or under layers are ideal in case you get wet and they cannot be dried for the next day. As indicated below some of these items can be hired, others can be purchased either from Trekset (our camp provider) or at shops in Melbourne. There is an attached form if you wish to hire or purchase gear for your child. ITEM 2x changes clothes for the hotel (track pants, shorts, T-shirt, jumper, etc.) Towel Underwear/Socks for each day Toiletries soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant (avoid aerosols) Sunscreen & lip balm Sleeping bag Thermals synthetic or wool Long woollen socks or ski socks** must reach just below the knee Beanie Neck warmer Ski pants - must be insulated, warm & minimum 10,000mm or 10k rated Ski jacket - must be insulated, warm & minimum 10,000mm or 10k rated Ski gloves** insulated and waterproof CAN BE HIRED IF SPECIFIED BEFORE END TERM 1 Ski goggles** not swimming goggles. Must have a UV rating. Sunglasses WILL NOT be adequate (OTG or over the glasses goggles may be necessary if you wear glasses) A packed lunch for day 1 **Can be purchased in the Snow Essentials Pack or separately. Student can come to school in free dress, we will depart approximately 9.00am On arrival and departure we will be carrying the luggage up to 150m over snow. To make it easier for you, soft sided bags which can be carried are best as large suitcases or luggage with wheels will be difficult to move. Appropriate sturdy footwear should be worn on arrival, departure and at all times whilst outdoors in the alpine region. Ugg boots and thongs pose a severe safety threat and should not be worn outdoors.

4 Alpine Experience 2015 Clothing and Equipment Requirements Each student will be required to have the appropriate clothing and equipment to ensure they have a safe and fun time skiing or boarding. The following list shows what is needed, as well as what is already provided to assist your child to pack correctly. Depending on whether students are skiing or boarding, the following gear is supplied and is covered in the costs: Skis, boots, poles, helmet OR Snowboard, boots, helmet and wrist guards Clothing is important in keeping students dry and warm. The following are items that should be taken and worn: Goggles proper ski goggles should be purchased to protect students eyes whilst skiing or boarding. They need to fit the students face properly and provide UV protection. Over the glasses or OTG goggles are available for students who need to wear glasses. Thermals made from polypropylene, wool, or synthetic fibres. NO COTTON Long woollen socks appropriate ski socks ensure the foot and lower leg is protected inside the boot. Any socks that do not extend beyond the top of the boot can cause discomfort or pain. Socks should reach just below the knee. Gloves ski gloves with insulation, as well as being waterproof. Gortex products are generally ideal, but cost more. Jacket and pants these must be insulated and waterproof. If purchasing, please ensure the item has a minimum 10,000mm or 10k rating. Less than this generally fails on wet days. Note: Jacket and pants can be hired from Halleys Lodge at an additional cost of $ Gloves can be purchased from Halleys Lodge, starting at $30.00.
