2 President s Column By Terry Gordon Happy Holidays, Everyone! The Tulsa Ski Club ski season is less than a month away with the trip to Wolf Creek. After Wolf Creek, we have trips about every two weeks that continue through March. Regrettably, we did have to cancel the trip to Crested Butte that was on Martin Luther King Weekend. Crested Butte is a popular destination, but we only had about 10 sign ups, and it was time to make a nother scheduled payment for our lodging. The board decided it wasn t worth risking more money based on the interest in the trip. This isn t a decision we like to make, but we have to act responsibly with the club s finances. We still have room on a few trips, so take a moment to look at this edition of the newsletter and sign up. The club has some great and affordable trips. All of the trips also have great discount lift tickets and ski rental pricing. If you have any questions, contact the trip captain, Robert Foster, or myself (Terry Gordon) and we can give you answers to any questions you may have. Now that you ve digested your Thanksgiving turkey it s time to look at December and some things scheduled for the club. At our next general meeting on December 10th, we are having a Chili Tasting Cook-Off. Robert Foster announced this at the last general meeting. This is a chance for you to highlight your favorite recipe and earn bragging rights for the best taste and flavor. We can t wait to see the different varieties; traditional, pork/green chili, southwestern with chicken, vegetarian, etc. This will be fun so get out your crock pots and recipe books, s e a r c h t h e internet, or call Grandma for her secrets, and let s see whose chili pot is empty at the end of the meeting. We still are seeing new faces at our meetings so continue to ask your friends to join us. Reach out and greet new and unfamiliar faces during our meetings, so they don t feel like an outsider. That same week on Friday, December 13 th, is the club Christmas Party. It starts at 7:00 and goes till 11:00 at the LaFortune Golf Club. Drinks, dancing, music, hors d oeuvers & karaoke are on the agenda for the evening. The Christmas Party Committee has worked hard on this, so if you can work it your schedules, please consider this event. Details and pricing are in this edition of the newsletter. It all seems to come at one time, running here and running there. It can be exhausting, and we can forget what this time of year is about. When you have a few moments, catch your breath. It s good to reflect on traditions that we have with family and friends when we celebrate this joyous period of the year. There are many things to be thankful for, so take that moment to relax and recall the blessings you ve been provided with. Once you ve done this, slow down so you can enjoy these blessings. 4 Meetup - A Networking Website TSC Has Joined Tulsa Ski Club has joined a new social networking website called Meetup. The website is located at meetup.com. Although the club has paid a fee to have the group networking page available for people with interests in outdoors, skiing, snowboarding, and social activity to join, it is FREE for an individual to join Meetup! We encourage folks to go to the TSC website and fill out an application to join our club, or to attend a meeting or other event that we will post on Meetup. Some of our other local ski clubs such as KC and OKC have also set up Meetup pages and have reported this to be a way they have attracted new members who may not have otherwise known about the ski club. Check it out for yourself, and join TSC on Meetup. If you have problems finding TSC, please Toni Hatfield at thookhatfield@gmail.com. We will be posting all our trips and meetings out there for the members of Meetup to see. Meetup Between OKC and Tulsa Ski Clubs Three Tulsa members and a guest attended the OKC Halloween Party when TSC was invited to attend the party on October 25: Trey Sophy, Toni Hatfield, Wendell Hillhouse, and Daun Wilkerson. What a wonderful time and great value! The entrance fee was $20 per person in advance, and that included snacks, dancing, door prizes, and all the beer they could drink. There was also a cash bar, but at one point the tickets were 2 for 1, so it was $2.50 for a very nice cocktail. The dancing was such a good time, with many fun people who were not shy getting out on the dance floor and shaking it. OKC also had a costume contest for various categories, and our TSC men ended up being the top two in the male individual contest. Trey ended up winning $50 in CASH for his Charlie Chaplin costume. Great job, Wendell and Trey! Thank you so much to OKC for including us in such a fun time. We have reciprocated and invited OKC to attend our Christmas party, although I have been warned that their Crested Butte trip leaves December 13, so they will likely not have too many takers this time. Hopefully we can continue to do joint events with our sister club in Oklahoma
