1 January 18th, 2018 Dear Parents/Guardians, Our Winter Fun day is planned for February 16th, 2018 for all students at St. Mary School. We have chosen Mount Pakenham for their Physical Education through Skiing and Snowboarding 2018 program. We will be travelling by bus to Pakenham leaving at 9:15 am sharp and returning for 3:35 dismissal. Skiing, snowboarding and the WOW tubing program will be available to all students. Skiing/Snowboarding All students participating are required to take lessons prior to getting their lift passes. The lessons can last from one to four hours depending on ability. Instruction at Mount Pakenham makes lessons fun and educational. After a skier evaluation, all students will then receive a colour coded lift ticket which allows them access to the terrain suitable for their ability. Equipment Ski and snowboard equipment is available to rent. All students are required to wear a ski helmet for downhill skiing, boarding and tubing. Prices include a helmet unless students are bringing their own equipment. Students bringing skies or snowboards must either bring an approved ski helmet (Hockey, bike or other helmets can t be substituted) or they may rent one from the rental shop for $1.00. Permission Forms and Payment Permission forms must be back no later than January 30th in order to reserve our spot at Mount Pakenham. Please pay by school cash online only. This makes processing our reservation information much simpler and is greatly appreciated. Online payments will be accepted up until February 9th, Other Information If parents wish to attend with their child, they must have a recent vulnerable sector check on file at the school office Due to very limited space on the buses we are asking that all parents drive their own vehicles to Mount Pakenham (or carpool with other parents) Please send your child with a watch so they may keep track of the time and help to ensure they are aware when it is time to start packing up to head home

3 SKI/SNOWBOARD PERMISSION / ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF BEHAVIOUR/CONDUCT CONDITIONS PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING WITH YOUR CHILD ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODE THERE ARE ELEMENTS OF RISK IN SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING THAT COMMON SENSE AND PERSONAL AWARENESS CAN HELP REDUCE. REGARDLESS OF HOW YOU DECIDE TO USE THE SLOPES, ALWAYS SHOW COURTESY TO OTHERS, OBSERVE THE CODE LISTED BELOW AND SHARE WITH OTHERS THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A GREAT OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE. You must remain in control and proceed in such a manner that you can stop or avoid other people or objects. As you proceed downhill or overtake another person, you must avoid the persons below and beside you. Do not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above. When entering a trail or starting downhill, look uphill and yield to others. If you are involved in or witness a collision you must remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol. You must use proper devices to prevent runaway equipment. You must not use lifts or terrain if your ability is impaired through use of alcohol or drugs. You must keep off closed trails and observe and obey all signs and warnings. BE AWARE SKI/SNOWBOARD WITH CARE! LIFT USE GUIDELINES: To ensure that all school students enjoy a good day of skiing/snowboarding also means that they use both chair lifts and surface lifts safely. a) Where applicable only those students who received an approval from the ski area staff can use lifts other than those designed as beginner lifts. b) All students must be aware and obey signs posted around the lift loading and unloading areas and along the tow path. c) While waiting their turn in a lift line, students must refrain from horseplay and prepare themselves for loading. d) When approaching a loading area, obey instructions given by a lift operator and make sure the ski ticket is properly displayed. e) When riding a chair lift, always use a restraining bar. Never bounce or rock chair in any way. Skis must always point straight and students must remain seated.

4 f) Never, under any circumstances, are students allowed to jump from chairs. If a lift stops, remain calm and wait until it restarts. In case of an emergency evacuation, remain calm and follow all instructions given by ski patrol or/and area employees. When approaching an unloading area do not lift restraining bar until instructed to do so by posted signs. When students clear the ramp, they must move away from that area immediately adjacent to unloading ramp. g) When riding a surface lift, skiers must always remain in the designated tow path. Never attempt to ski a slalom or to zig-zag on the way to the top. h) To unload anywhere outside of a designated unloading area must be avoided unless the lift stops and skiers are instructed to do so by the ski patrol or the area employees. In such a case everyone is to leave the tow path as quickly as possible. i) In a case when a skier falls while riding a surface lift, clear the path immediately, remove your skis and exit the tow path. j) To ski/snowboard down a lift tow path is dangerous and strictly prohibited. k) All skiers must always: display their ski ticket; follow all instructions given by the ski area personnel; behave in a responsible manner; be courteous to other students, other skiers, and area personnel; be aware of and abide by posted Responsibility Code. l) Behavior contrary to the above instruction will endanger offenders just the same as other users and may result in a serious injury. With no exception, any and all offenders will lose their ski privilege.

This signed form is required for all students who wish to participate in this outdoor recreation and skiing/snowboarding/tubing education program. INHERENT RISK Skiing/Snowboarding/Tubing is a sport with physical demands and inherent risks which are beyond the control of Mount Pakenham and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. Falls, collisions and other incidents may occur and cause injury. Skiers/Snowboarders/Tubers must assume the risks and dangers. EQUIPMENT Mount Pakenham provides rental equipment. Bindings on equipment reduce the risk of injury when falling. Bindings will not release under all circumstances and they do not guarantee safety in all cases. Parents/guardians, or students if over the age of 18 years, will be responsible for the reimbursement of any costs associated with the loss or damage to rental equipment or student owned equipment. 9 Dear Parents and Students, Preparation is the key to success for a school visit on your end and ours. Please ensure that student information is filled out completely and accurately and submitted to Mount Pakenham, via the trip organizer, as soon as possible. This will help us to prepare for your school s visit. Also please take some time to review Mount Pakenham s Tips for Parents; paying close attention to The Alpine Responsibility Code and Dressing for the Weather. Following strict guidelines set out by Ontario Snow Resorts Association and Ontario School Board Insurance Exchange OSBIE, our Skiing in Schools programs provide a fun and safe learning opportunity. Dressing for the Weather Mount Pakenham offers you a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. The secret to winter fun is dressing properly for the weather. You ll want to keep warm, dry and comfortable on the snow. Dress in Layers Layering for winter sports allows you to accommodate your body s constantly changing temperature. Generally, layering is divided into three areas: Wicking layer (polypropylene underwear - top and bottoms) - "wicks," or moves, moisture away from your skin and dries quickly. Insulating layer (wool, fleece, sweater) - keeps heat in and cold out. Weather Protection - Repels water from snow and blocks the wind while letting perspiration evaporate (both jacket and pants). Choose a lightweight garment that is made of waterproof, breathable material. There are several synthetic materials on the market and available at outdoor sports stores. When buying skiwear, look for fabric that is water and wind-resistant. Look for wind flaps to shield zippers, snug cuffs, collars that can be snuggled up to the chin and drawstrings that can be adjusted for comfort and to keep wind out. Winter Hats and NeckWarmers Usually made of fleece or wool, a good ski hat combined with a neck warmer will retain 80% of your body s heat, keeping you warm and toasty even on the coldest days. Please make sure hats are thin to fit nicely under a helmet. Scarves are unsafe to wear around moving equipment, neck warmers stay in place and are the best option for cold days. Gloves or Mittens for Winter Sports Waterproof, breathable shell and well insulated. Mittens are usually better for those susceptible to cold hands. Woolen(woven) mitts or gloves are not suitable as they get wet and stick to the lift equipment. Hand and toe warmers are available at our Retail Shop. Socks for Skiing, Snowboarding, Tubing and Snowshoeing One (1) pair of light to medium weight works best. If the sock is too thick or if you re wearing too many, it could make your boots too tight, reducing circulation, which causes cold feet. It s also a good idea to change into fresh socks before putting your boots on. Damp socks quickly become cold and uncomfortable. Eye Protection Have sunglasses and goggles with you. Skiing and snowboarding are a lot more fun when you can see and it is important to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

10 Sunscreen and Lip Balm Protect yourself from the sun. The sun reflects off the snow and is stronger than you think, even on cloudy days! Keep lip balm in a pocket and apply often while on the slopes. There s no reason to be cold during your winter experience, and with a little preparation and the proper clothing and accessories, you won t be. Don t forget to put your child s name on all helmets, gloves, boots, skis/boards and clothing to help us get lost items back home. Caution Old Equipment: Please do not send your child to Mount Pakenham with unsafe, old or borrowed equipment (ski binding settings may differ for your childs weight and ability). Have equipment checked at our repair shop at least one week in advance or take it to your local ski/snowboard shop. Equipment Tips If you have your own equipment, or if you plan to borrow equipment, please bear in mind that equipment must be adjusted specifically for you. To be safe on the slopes, please have a technician adjust your equipment based on your height, weight, shoe size, and level of ability. Please ensure that your equipment has been tuned (waxed and sharpened). Properly tuned equipment will give you more control on the slopes. Rental Equipment The Mount Pakenham Rental Shop is located to the left of the main lodge when looking at the ski hill. Tip: Don t bundle up before renting equipment. Follow these steps: Go to washroom and put on base layers and snow pants. Place items needed on hill (hats, mitts, goggles, neck warmers, etc.) securely in your pocket and store all unneeded personal belongings on shelves, hooks or in a coin locker in the main lodge. Proceed to the rental shop, jacket unzipped. Locate pre-assigned equipment (check your personalized lift ticket for equipment number) along the wall in numerical order. Put your boots on and place your regular shoes in the slot where you found your ski/board boots. For the proper boot fit, be sure to wear the proper socks. The boot should fit like a snug hiking boot. Be sure that your pants are not tucked into the boot. If your boots don t fit, please seek assistance from a rental shop employee. Proceed through the rental shop where you will receive your skis/board and helmet. Helmets Helmets are required for skiing, snowboarding and tubing and are included in your rental price. It is important to wear a properly fitted, ski/snowboard specific helmet. Helmets should fit snuggly and not obstruct vision. Helmets can be worn with or without a light head covering underneath such as a balaclava. What to Expect from a lesson... *Learn to Ski or Snowboard Safely *Healthy Fun *Good Physical Workout
