2 Experience The is an iconic two hour rail journey that meanders its way from Cairns or Freshwater Railway Station, through the World Heritage-listed rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park, to the quaint mountain village of Kuranda. This historic railway line originally opened in 1891 and is an engineering feat that has stood the test of time. Up to 1500 men at a time armed only with hand picks, shovels and dynamite carved through mountainous and unforgiving landscape to construct the 37 kilometres of track. The historic carriages of are hauled by dedicated 1720 class locomotives adorned in Buda-dji colours, which portrays the legend of the Buda-dji Carpet Snake, said to have carved out the Barron Gorge. 5 Take a Journey through the Rainforest The journey from Cairns Railway Station takes approximately 2 hours to Kuranda Railway Station, which includes a 10 minute stop at the spectacular Barron Falls Station for a bird s eye view of the Barron Falls. Freshwater Railway Station offers a selection of delicious breakfast items, available at the cafe before your journey begins. Whilst in Kuranda, visit the Kuranda Railway Station Tearoom for a delicious mango smoothie and traditional Devonshire teas.
