2 The MASTERFIT UNIVERSITY curriculum has been developed by master boot technicians Jeffrey S. Rich, C. Ped, Gregory Hoffmann, C. Ped, Michael Tambling, C. Ped., Robert Gleason, Mark Elling and Dana Cagen. Mr. Rich, Mr. Gleason, Mr. Hoffmann, Mr. Tambling, Mr. Elling and Mr. Cagen have all lectured extensively on the bio mechanics of snow sports and related boot fitting and modification issues. They also co-direct Ski Press Magazine's annual Boot Testing Program where they are Technical Editors. The MasterFit U. staff has more than 300 years of combined orthotic manufacturing and boot fitting/customization experience. Mark Elling is an accomplished outdoor and snow sports expert with experience in various fields. He is the author of The All-Mountain Skier: The Way to Expert Skiing (McGraw-Hill), a regular contributor and editorial review board member to The Professional Skier and National Ski Patrol magazines and technical contributor and equipment review consultant for Skiing magazine. He is based in Oregon where during the winter months he is a professional guide at Mount Bailey Snow cat Sking, head boot fitter at Mount Bachelor Ski and Sport and owner of Mercury Mobile Performance, a custom footbed and bootfitting service. Sam Tischendorf is a practicing podiatrist graduating from Queensland University of Technology in 2009 where she specialised in sports and biomechanics. Sam s passion for winter sports led her to Masterfit University and a desire to work within the biomechanics behind skiing and bootfitting. For the past two seasons Sam has worked alongside some of the most renowned bootfitters in the world at Bootdoctors in Telluride, Colorado where she went on to graduate to a Masterfit Instructer at the 2014 Masterfit University seminars held across the USA. Sam specializes in women s specific fit sessions and specialized footbed manufacturing tutoring.
3 Masters Alpine & Snowboard INTENSIVE TRAINING FOR EXPERIENCED BOOT TECHS! An intensive, two-day session with extensive hands-on skills practice. Packed with practical information you can use to immediately improve business. It features extensive hands-on practice opportunities and frequent breakout sessions on core topics including athlete assessment, sales, footbeds construction, boot stretching and grinding, stance alignment and more! For experienced boot techs, snowsports retailers, Certified Pedorthists and Certified Athletic Trainers. Tuition includes instruction, copy of The Bootfitting Bible training workbook, lunch daily, free pairs of drop-in and custom insoles. Tuition: $495 COURSE CURRICULUM Day One is chock-full of the core building blocks of good bootfitting, all explored at an advanced level suitable to the professional fitter with experience. Day One curriculum blends multi-media lecture, small group breakouts and many hands-on learning opportunities in the following topics: Anatomy and Biomechanics Athlete Assessment for Better Sales and Effective Bootfitting Underfoot Support and Custom Footbeds Construction Ankle Joint Range of Motion for Snowsports Issues with Bony Prominences and Nerve Impingement Assessment-Based Problem Solving In the morning of Day Two, Masters attendees select a three-hour intensive workshop of their choice. This new, focused workshop format allows for the sort of in-depth and hands-on training experience participants have been requesting. There are 7 workshop to choose from as described below.when to grind, when to stretch. They aren t interchangeable. Basic Custom Footbed Fabrication. Basic level attendees build at least one complete pair and receive instruction in both non-posted and fully-posted custom footbed styles for ski and snowboard. Advanced Custom Footbed Fabrication. Advanced group attendees will focus on ramping up their casting, posting and grinding skills under an experienced coaching eye. Basic Boot Liner and Shell Modifications. Basic level attendees practice common liner mods, shell grinds and shell stretches using a variety of different tools and methods. Advanced Boot Liner and Shell Modifications. Advanced group attendees take liner and shell modifications into the realm of more sophisticated multi-modification solutions for more challenging bone and nerve problems. Basic Stance Alignment for Alpine Skiing. Basic level attendees will use a variety of tools to assess skiers fore-aft and lateral stance alignment and learn to make changes to improve balance and comfort.
4 Advanced Stance Alignment for Alpine Skiing. Advanced level attendees work with two different instructors during two live demos to improve their stance assessment skills. In the afternoon of Day Two, attendees choose three, one-hour skills-development sessions from a variety of topics. This gives attendees the opportunity to layer additional instruction onto their morning intensive workshops. Afternoon sessions topics vary by venue, depending on staff, but may include: Biomechanics and Movement for General Sports Balance Advanced Shell Modifications Advanced Liner Modifications Stance Balancing for Alpine Skiing The Business of Bootfitting Tactics for Creating Successful Add-On Sales Advanced Assessment Techniques Focused Footbeds (advanced techniques with one-on-one feedback) Snowboard-Specific Bootfitting Techniques Boot Sole Planing and Application of Lifter Plates Intuition (EVA foam) Liner Molding Protocols Modern Plastics: Properties and Modification Protocols
5 Masters Plus The Dark Arts TAKING YOUR EXPERTISE TO THE PINNACLE Being a master boot technician takes more than knowing how to make a boot feel comfortable. The Master s Plus curriculum picks up where the Master s course leaves off, filling in the gaps in your knowledge and helping you take your bootfitting expertise to the pinnacle of understanding. Designed for long-time bootfitting pros, the two-day, hands-on immersion workshop focuses on technical bootfitting issues. It ensures that experienced Master bootfitters remain on the cutting edge of changing technology and provides them with the latest methods for executing successful bootfitting plans. With streamlined lecture content and increased practical opportunities, Master s Plus participants experience the bootfitting methods used by the industry s top technicians. Master s Plus attendees receive extra hands-on training and application of techniques that will not be covered in the Masters workshop including: Advanced Athlete Assessment Advanced Custom Footbed Construction, Critique and Modification Understanding the Neutral Foot Forefoot Biomechanics and Alignment Advanced Foot Balancing for Ankle Dorsiflexion Range of Motion Nerve Problem Troubleshooting and Metatarsal Pad Construction Advanced Stance Balancing (assessment; understanding and applying binding delta and ski thickness; practical sole planing) Registration is restricted to prior Master s graduates, Certified Pedorthists with bootfitting experience and those with similar qualifications. The Master s Plus curriculum assumes an extensive knowledge base and high level of experience as a professional bootfitter. As a general rule, Master s Plus participants will be building more than 50 pairs of custom footbeds per year, perform regular boot modifications and be familiar with various stance balancing techniques. Those who don t meet these recommended guidelines are suggested to enroll in the Masters course. In the morning of Day Two, Masters Plus attendees may choose to remain in the Dark Arts zone and take part in the scheduled, three-hour Advanced Stance Alignment for Alpine Skiing workshop (see below) or may choose to attend one of the focused bootfitting workshops offered also to Masters attendees. Workshop options include: Basic Custom Footbed Fabrication. Basic level attendees build at least one complete pair and receive instruction in both non-posted and fully-posted custom footbed styles for ski and snowboard. Advanced Custom Footbed Fabrication.
