3 PLEASE READ SKI TRIP INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND THE LIABILITY WAIVER AND COMPLETE AND RETURN THE LIABILITY WAIVER TO MRS KIRK OR MR McGILLIVRAY BY 18 AUGUST SKI TRIP - INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Skiing and boarding is a wonderful sport that can be enjoyed by the whole family but it is essential that parents/caregivers understand the risk factors in the sport and the fact that it is done in extreme weather conditions. It is ESSENTIAL that students bring the correct gear. Below is some information which you need to consider and a "What To Bring List" giving the essential items needed is attached. Risk Factors in both Skiing and Snow boarding As with all sport there is a risk of injury at any time. When skiing or boarding students WILL fall over many times when learning and even as their skill level improves. It is a part of the sport. Parents and students must be aware of this and expect it. It also involves the use of chair lifts and Lift tows such as T- Bars and pommas, which take the students up the slopes. There are numerous possibilities for injury, some of which include - falling and twisting knees, pulling muscles, bruising and in the less common but still possible cases, the breaking of arms, wrists, legs, shoulder bones etc. The likelihood of the more serious injuries increases dramatically if the person is pushing the limits of control and speed. Most injuries of a serious nature are a result of skiing and boarding out of control. Students MUST ski in control at all times. Parents should note that lessons are only for 2 hours each day that lessons are taken. At other times they are skiing independently under the supervision of the teachers. There is the possibility of skiers and boarders: - Colliding with other skiers or boarders... or with other objects e.g. trees, poles etc. - Hitting their heads on the ground, other objects or other people in a collision. - Twisting ankles, wrists etc. - Bruising various parts of the body - depending where they land - hips, legs, buttocks etc. - Less frequent but still possible - breaking arms, legs, collarbones etc. - Falling off T-Bars that may cause injury if it hits them. - On very rare occasions and usually as a result of not following correct procedures - falling off Chair Lifts. This can result in a very serious injury to the student. - Hypothermia is a possibility in alpine areas unless students are properly clothed. Risk Management Risk management is a joint venture between the pupils, the parents, the teachers and the instructors. The following is aimed at reducing the risks.
4 a) The Pupil (the skier or boarder): * They MUST keep in control the whole time. * They should NEVER go or encourage others to go to areas that are beyond their capabilities. * They should NEVER lie or exaggerate about their ability. * They MUST have lessons even if they are EXPERIENCED skiers or boarders. * Must attend lessons according to their experience and ability - not just go with friends. * MUST wear the safety gear provided. b) The Parents / Caregivers * Must make their child aware of the safety factors. * Must provide the gear and clothing required. * Provide all the Information requested accurately. c) The teachers * The teachers do a lot in the organizational stage to reduce risk: - They organize lessons for EVERYONE and INSIST that ALL students have lessons on both days. - Provide the appropriate gear for safety and protection. Included in the package is: + Good quality ski gear - supplied by a professional ski hire establishment. + HELMETS are included for ALL skiers and boarders. + WRIST GUARDS are included for all snow boarders. + Ski clothing is included - pants and parkers. - Provide this information to parents and a "What to Bring" List to ensure parents and pupils know the risks and what to bring. * They provide the duty of care that all teachers provide on a trip. d) The Instructors * Lessons are provided for 2 hours on the day lessons are taken in the package. These lessons are given by the Instructors from the resorts and are all qualified instructors.
