18 RACING PROGRAMS Why race at Mansfield? Because We promote sport as FUNdamental to the growth and development of children and teens. We create learning environments and opportunities which respect children and teens as individuals all of whom develop at their own rates. We foster friendship and community racing gives us opportunities to engage with, appreciate and respect all members of Mansfield and the larger community of sport. This is why racing at Mansfield is special! 16 Program guide 2018/19

19 RACING PROGRAMS Racing 101 Developmentally, we see fitness as the cornerstone of all sports for all ages. The more fit you are, the better you can learn to ski or ride. The better technical skier or rider you are, the more successful a racer you can become. Time on task is essential for development and achievement. Obviously, the more time you can spend doing something the better you can become at it. Consequently, Mansfield will offer extended opportunities to both youth and adults to increase their time on snow through pre-season camps and mid-week training. The Southern Ontario Division (SOD) of Alpine Ontario, to which Mansfield Ski Club belongs, promotes and facilitates racing among the 34 SOD member clubs in accordance with Alpine Ontario (AOA) and Alpine Canada (ACA) rules and regulations. Training Squad, U8 and U10 racers who are developing fundamental skills practice and race in a series of at home races. U12 is the age at which children start to travel to other clubs in the SOD for competitions. U12 all compete within their age group at the same level. U14 U19 SOD Cup & O Cup Racing To ensure that participants are competing at an appropriate level two tiers of racing are implemented at U14 to U19. The SOD Cup Series is the Southern Ontario Division Inter- Club race series consisting of weekend races throughout January and February culminating in the SOD Championships in March. The O Cup Series is the more Competitive stream there are local and provincial race opportunities that lead to Provincial and National Championships for those athletes who qualify. Mansfield s O Cup Program is run to support those athletes in our race program who have an interest in more time training and more race opportunities. These athletes typically are on snow 3 4 days a week during the race season from mid-december through March. The O Cup Program is open to all U14 and U16 members who are willing to take part in the whole program and may be nominated to do so by the coaching staff. At U19 racers may take part in the SOD Series (6-8 races) and have the opportunity to enter additional FIS level races in Ontario. Coaching Expenses In addition to Coaching Fees, when a coach has to travel and stay out of town for a competition/training their expenses for accommodation, meals, travel and travel day fees will be shared and charged to the participating athletes. This would include, but are not limited to, out of SOD Provincial Championships or National Championships, CANAM Finals, Whistler Cup, etc. Program guide 2018/19 17

20 Racing 101 AGE GROUP TEAMS Once a child is registered in an Age Category they will be placed on the team which corresponds to their year of birth. For example, if a child is 10 years of age (as of December 31) they will automatically be placed in the U12 Program on the 10 year old team. At no time will a child be moved down within their Age Group Team/Category. Racing-Up Policy When a young skier demonstrates themselves (according to criteria explained below) to be exceptional within their age, the coaches of that age group, in consultation with the Head Coach, may determine that it is in the developmental interest of the young skier to move them up to the next age to move up not more than one year. During the Christmas Camp the coaching staff will have the opportunity to observe and assess each skier. If during this process a skier is identified as being exceptional within their age, and it is the coaches consensus that the young skier would develop better and would be able to fit into the age above, then that recommendation could be made. There would be no requirement for the young racer to move up but would have the opportunity to do so. Likewise parents can make a similar request to the Head Coach to have their child considered for moving up. Racing up in the U8, U10 and U12 happens within the club. Racing Up into the U14, U16 and U19 age groups is generally not possible as athletes in these age groups are Nationally Carded through ACA. To be considered exceptional a young skier will: (1) demonstrate current technical abilities well in advance of peers their age and on par with those skiers in the age above, (2) have race times (from the current year) well in advance of their peers and on par with those skiers in the age above, (3) be mature enough to fit in with the skiers on the older age Team/Category. 18 Program guide 2018/19

21 Racing 101 COACHING FEES / ADDITIONAL DAY COSTS / RACE ENTRY FEES Coaching Fees There will be a daily coaching fee applied to any additional days that a racer chooses to participate in, above what is included in their pre-registered program. This may include such things as extra training days, or invitational events (ex: Mastermind, POD Cup, U14/U16 Spring Series, SOD Championships, Provincial and National Championships, CANAMs, Whistler Cup). Coaching fees are set annually and advertised in the Program Booklet. Friday Training/Additional Coaching Days Friday Training and Additional Coaching days may be purchased as an 8 day package or as Pay As You Go individual days. Friday Training packages may be used interchangeably for Friday Training, or Coaching Fees applied to any additional race or training days. Race Entry Fees Most race events have a race entry fee which is payable by the participant. AOA U12, U14 & U16 SOD Cup participants pay their race entry fees directly to Alpine Ontario when they register with AOA prior to the start of the season. O Cup and FIS racers (U14, U16 & U19) pay their fees on a race by race basis this is done by the MSC Race Administrator and then charged to the family account. This is the same procedure that is used for all age groups attending Invitational events and/ or Championships as referred to above. U8, U10 and NFS races which are hosted at Mansfield (including the Club Championships) do not have any race entry fee associated with them. Summary Attending a race event may include the following costs: (1) MSC Coaching Fees (2) coaching expenses and (3) race entry fees. Questions? x234 THE FINE PRINT AOA fees for U12, U14, U16 & U19 participants are paid directly to Alpine Ontario during their online waiver/ registration process at the beginning of the season. It is most important for kids this age to spend as much time as they can on snow developing the FUNdamental skiing and racing skills. This is best accomplished by skiing in a group with engaging coaches. The goals and focus of the program are outdoor winter fun, skill development, and team membership in a non-competitive environment. Seven and eight year olds will spend 70% of their time on-snow in supervised free skiing drills and games, 20% of their time in training courses and 10% in races. There is no substitute for time on snow! Sixty percent of the Program time is spent in supervised free skiing games and exercises with the rest of the time in race specific training or racing. There will be two at home races (1 GS, 1 Dual Slalom), two interclub races with Caledon Ski Club (1 GS, 1 Slalom) and the Club Championships (GS race).
