19 U16 U16 is for athletes aged 14 and 15 (as of December 31). U16 athletes begin their highperformance training through the individual program, offered in two variations that continue to develop strong technical and racing skills, but that differ by commitment and competitive intensity: weekend/sod Cup and O Cup (high). Fall camps and season camps are a component of the U16 program. The proven elements of every successful ski racer are effective coordination with their academic endeavours, time on snow, and physical and mental training. Collingwood has a high concentration of ski racers and the lowest number of ski days of any skiing centre in the world. Consequently, it becomes imperative to spend time away skiing in order to stay competitive with other provinces. Away training provides exposure to a variety of terrain and increases the number of days on snow. The mid-december camp is mandatory for the O Cup/all-inclusive program; otherwise camps are optional, however attending one of the camps offered in July/August and Copper Mountain in November is strongly recommended. WEEKEND/SOD CUP PROGRAM 10 weeks The SOD Cup is the Southern Ontario Division race series formerly known as Division 2. As in past seasons it consists of 4-5 race starts (specific to U12-U21) that align with the needs for each age group. Racing will continue in much the same way as the experience in the U14 program. Holiday training camp (Dec. 27-Jan. 4, excluding Jan. 1) is included, where team selection will take place. Time on snow is always recommended and attending pre-season camps will help athletes prepare for the season. Sat. 9:00-3:30; Sun. 9:00-3:00 Lunch 11:00-noon Price: $1,570.00; after Nov. 15: $1,884.00; after Dec. 15: $2, Please pay AOA fees online directly to AOA. ALL-INCLUSIVE/O CUP PROGRAM O Cup is a province-wide racing program formerly known as Division 1 that consists of one midwinter series, three mini-series/invitational races and one final series. From the O Cup series, athletes may qualify for CanAm and Whistler Cup races. This program offers the individual athletes high-performance training with the goal of producing the most successful U16 athletes on and off the hill in Canada. Training at this level is a season commitment of a minimum of three days/week, extending to four for most second-year U16s. This program requires a commitment to not only race training on snow, but also to a dry-land program that will help ensure the fitness level and strength required to be successful. The athlete should commit to off-season dry-land training as well as both on- and off-snow training from November to the end of April. In an effort to provide the highest possible level of program for our U16 individual athletes we are happy to have Wayne Howard returning as the program s head coach. We will continue to work with other clubs to provide the best possible training environments. Fall fitness testing as outlined by AOA is mandatory. The program includes: coaching fall dry-land training 19

SOD PROGRAM The Southern Ontario Division Team (SOD Team), formerly the Escarpment Ski Team, is a notfor-profit organization that offers a high level racing program focused on regional- and nationallevel FIS racing. The SOD team tailors and individualizes programs to meet the needs of today s diversified student athletes. It provides a dynamic program with passionate coaches that maximize athletic development, focus on the importance of education, and create a positive experience to allow the skier to grow as an athlete, student and person. The athletes on the SOD team will have access to the area s best training venues: Alpine, Craigleith, Osler, Georgian Peaks, Devil's Glen and Blue Mountain. This program is endorsed by Alpine Ontario as the path to the Ontario Ski Team. Price: approx. $16,000 For more information contact Jason Manning at j.manning7290@gmail.com. 21
22 NSA NATIONAL FIS RACING & ACADEMIC PROGRAM This program provided by the National Ski Academy in Collingwood is an all-inclusive package that includes camps, race fees, travel and accommodation, transportation, coaching, fitness, ski suit and private school education. At this commitment level the student athlete will receive up to 130 days on snow and up to 35 FIS race starts following the AIM guidelines defined by Alpine Canada (ACA). The program begins August 15 when the student athlete travels to Switzerland for an eightweek Camp that includes approximately 35 training days on the glaciers in Saas Fee and Zermatt and a four-day educational excursion in Europe (past trips have included Paris, Rome and Geneva). During the time in Switzerland, NSA teachers begin delivering the first semester curriculum and a heavy emphasis is placed on physical conditioning and injury prevention. After returning from Europe and prior to the competitive season, athletes will continue their onsnow training in Quebec, Alberta and locally in Collingwood. With a heavy emphasis on academics during this period, most students will complete their first semester courses prior to Christmas. From January through March a typical weekday (when not travelling for a race series) involves a high-intensity on-snow training session from 8:30-noon, lunch, afternoon classes, dry-land training, dinner and evening classes until 9:00 p.m.. Many NSA student athletes choose to return to their home school for the second semester. In these cases, the NSA academic staff can liaise with the home school to deliver curriculum until the transition point at the end of the race season. Full-time boarding is available at additional cost. 31 The NSA is a not-for-profit ski academy and fully-accredited private school located at 200 Oak Street in Collingwood.
