2 SKIBACS Whistler-Blackcomb Trip Report 4 8 January, 2017 Thirty-five ski, snowboard and snowshoe enthusiasts lucked into bluebird skies with belowfreezing temps (no melt / refreeze cycle) for 4 glorious days, ideal for the 4-day pass option. Sixteen of us had already met up at our pre-trip pizza & potluck party. Deli wraps, fruit, cookies, munchies, wine/sodas/juices, duty-free speed-shopping, and movies (Admissions, The Martian) made the drive pass quickly. Thursday: we enjoyed the shorter week-day lift-lines under brilliant sun, and a lively welcome party fueled by wines, beer, crudités, cheeses, artichoke/jalepeno dip, chips with salsa & guacamole, spanakopita, meatballs, taquitos, eggroll and mini-wontons. Everyone was a winner, with prizes for all present: T-shirts (Linda & Andy Merz, Rhonda Miller, George Hewitt, Sue Waggener, Eleanor Johnson), water bottle & cap (Tom Waggener, Eldee Bitseff, Becky Kim, Ryan Miller), cap & Little Hotties (Cathy Vaughn, Bob Freeman), Mariners bag & travel kit (Chris Olafson, Joanna Szydlo-Moore, Bob Moffat) or water bottle (Keith Vaughn), wine (Reen Payne, Clara Miller, Richard Ketchum, Stephanie DeLaVergne, Bruce Benard, Andi Hudson, Deanna Freeman, Debi Friese), Belgian beer (Bonnie Kay), Corksicle wine chiller (Brad Miller), Boeing scarf (Bruce Putnam), head-lamp (Claudio Parazzoli) and travel lock, duffle, magnet (Pam Robinson) 2
3 Friday: Snow flurries and great snow-making covered any Thursday loss, so we all got soft snow. It seemed like half the skiers were Australian and Seahawks fans - joining in the celebration of the evening s massive win Saturday: more super-sunny skies, with all terrain open for the weekenders. One tiny rider downloading mid-afternoon opined about his pocket-sized Curious George that monkey needs a nap ; his mom explained this was 2yo Zeke s 2nd season! Sunday: Off-piste activities ranged from brunch to retail therapy, while most of our 14 4-day skiers skied right up to departure time. Richard s Killer Death Cookie (mis)adventure resulted in a toboggan ride, walking boot but only a 15-minute delay of bus departure. SKIBACS trip veterans and newbies, we all made a new skiing friendships at Whistler- Blackcomb, which keeps improving as best-in-north-america! 3

5 Join us at TELUS! So Just what is there to do at Whistler during the Telus World Ski and Snowboard festival? Well..I have some suggestions for you. In addition to the great spring snow, you ll find outdoor concerts at the Skiers Plaza, you can demo new skis/boards at the demo park, get some thrills at the International Roller derby games, watch extreme freestyle skiers/boarders competing for fame, go clubbing, take in a fashion show, browse galleries, dine at some of the great restaurants, go shopping, or how about a world class spa day? I m sure you ll find much more to do if you end with some extra time. Hope to see you there! Pete Anderson Telus 2017 trip leader 5
6 Lodge Report Please join us in welcoming Corey Meador as our new caretaker! Corey's parents were ski bums who met while working at Mt. Baker back before there were lifts, when earning your turns by hiking was the only choice. Pictures of the (since burned down) snow covered mid-mountain lodge they lived in and managed often appear on commercial Christmas cards. They eventually settled back where they grew up in Seattle, and Corey lived there (Kenmore, actually) until he was 8, then Portland (Beaverton, actually) until he went to college in Olympia. After a whole other career in recreation program and facility management there--while patrolling as a volunteer at Crystal--he finally "figured out what he wanted to be when he grew up" in his mid-40's, and has been a Ski Patroller full time at Crystal ever since. Off-season, Corey worked as a mediator and family law guardian ad litem representing kids in court cases, as an EMT at the Washington State Convention Center and Century Link Field & Event Center in Seattle, and currently as the 1st-Aid responder for summer operations at Crystal. You may meet Corey's Golden Retriever buddy Charlie who visits a few days each month, outside around the Lodge. He loves kids and is OK to pet without asking, but Corey requests that we DON'T LET HIM (or the local fox he's befriended) COME IN THE BUILDING! He's only allowed in the Caretaker's apartment! (And please don't feed the foxes!) 6
