If CANDIDE were the work of a modern-day writer, we?d be tempted to call it hallucinogenic?i.e., clearly the result of a binge on drugs. Yes, it?s that imaginatively crazy?and would render any current (cinematic) attempt at even a?slasher film? little more than risible. As for a current-day equivalent in written form, I don?t know of any?but perhaps that?s simply my ignorance. No one escapes the verbal pellets of Voltaire?s shotgun?with the exception of the inhabitants of El Dorado, whose remarkable benevolence towards our hero and his entourage is ultimately the thing that allows Candide to survive. But Europe and its inhabitants? Nobody is spared! It?s equally impossible (or at least risible) to even think about awarding stars to this work. The world knows it as a classic. And even in the time of François-Marie Arouet (nom de plume, Voltaire), the work rendered him an instant celebrity. Certainly the names?master Pangloss? and?cunegonde? have come down to us almost as part of the language and are possibly as well-known to native English speakers as?romeo? and?juliet.? And let us never forget the simple wisdom Voltaire imparts through the mouth of Candide in the very last sentence of this book when Candide/Voltaire exhorts us to?cultivate our garden.?
