4 Page JUNE All Aboard the Wine Train 2009 OVSC Summit All Aboard the Wine Train Cuyahoga Valley National Park June 19 20, 2009 We have sold out all spots on the wine train. This should be a very exciting first time trip for our club through beautiful Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Enjoying 5 different wines from Ferrante Winery in Geneva, Ohio along with light appetizers. I will have your tickets and all information you need at the June 2 nd meeting (which is at Otter Creek). If you cannot attend, please contact me to coordinate the picking up of your information. Ginny Young ginyoung@columbus.rr.com OVSC Summit 2009 The OVSC Summit will be held the weekend of May in Cincinnati. At last count there were about 10 New Ski Clubbers planning to attend the festivities and meetings. I will update you on the Summit events at the June Otter Creek Winery meeting and will also put them in the July newsletter. HELMET USE CONTINUES TO GROW Vail Resorts announced that the employees of their five ski resorts. Keystone, Vail, Beaver Creek, A Basin and Breckenridge, must wear helmets while skiing beginning next season. The company also stated that children ages 12 and below would be required to wear helmets while in ski lessons and that helmets would be included in kids' equipment rental packages unless the parent signs a waiver declining helmet use. Quebec is considering mandatory helmet use following the death of actress Natasha Richardson, New Jersey considered such a bill in 2001, and Michigan did so in 2008, but neither bill passed, and to our knowledge no laws requiring helmets exist in North America or Europe at the present. It was also noticed that more Europeans were wearing helmets while skiing in Switzerland this past season. A couple of years ago it seemed that if a skier was wearing a helmet on European slopes, they were usually American. No longer. This season, it seemed that ski helmet wearers spoke German, Italian, or French much more often than they spoke English. In the U.S., NSAA studies show that 43% of skiers and boarders are now wearing helmets, compared with 25% in the season -- with the percentages of kids doing so varying inversely by age, 60% of those 10 to 14 wore helmets, and 70% ages 9 and below wearing them. If you did not wear a helmet in 2009 you may want to consider buying one for 2010, Check out the pre or post season sales. Ask your fellow skiers who wear helmets. They are very comfortable and light, if fitted properly. Thoughtfully Submitted Deb Crall Bruce Kern OVSC Rep More 2010 Ski Trips - for Great Skiing Fun Spruce Hills at Snow Trails January 8-10 We are planning a weekend trip to Snow Trails in January. We have reserved the Lodge at Spruce Hill, for Friday and Saturday night, January 8-9. The trip will include a Happy Hour on Friday and pasta dinner on Saturday night, plus a continental breakfast on Saturday morning, We are still working on some of the costs for the trip. Plus, it will depend on how many members participate but, it looks like the trip will cost approximately $60.00 to $85.00 per person for the weekend. Lift ticket to Snow Trails will be extra. Seven Springs weekend We are working with a Seven Springs on a Mid-week car pool trip. We will go on a Tuesday and and return on a Wednesday.
