1 Unit 5, page At the beach a) CD 3, track 20 Cawsand Beach on a warm, sunny, Saturday afternoon: an audio poem of sounds: the sound of the waves lapping on the beach, now and again a larger wave makes a bit more noise. The other sounds come and go. They are: seagulls crying and squabbling aggressively children squealing in delight, laughing an ice cream van's tune ( Lili Marlene!) announcing its arrival, followed by someone (an adult) saying "Oh, let's get an ice cream." a bicycle bell ringing people splashing in the sea a ship's horn going out in the distance A moped dogs barking people walking across the shingle beach, with scrunching sounds a sailing boat being wheeled across the beach and pushed into the sea, followed by the sail being raised and catching the wind a large animal surfacing in the sea followed by a boy's voice: "Look, there's a seal!" kids kicking a football around a girl yawning, then saying "It's so hot!" and an older woman replying "Don't just lie in the sun then. Go swimming." sound of a small ferry boat approaching, then a man's voice "Oh, there's the Red Pig." A child replies, "That's not a pig, daddy, it's a boat." - Man again: "Yes, but that's what we call the boat. The Red Pig. It's the ferry from Plymouth."

3 Unit 5, page The mini-talk CD 3, track 32 Miss Bell: Girl: Both: OK, Justin and Sam. It's your turn now. All right, our favourite place by the sea is Cawsand. As you can see on our poster. OK, Justin? Er first we want to talk about Cawsand today. And then about Cawsand a long time ago, in the 18th and 19th centuries. OK, Cawsand What about questions? Questions? Oh, yes, sorry. Er can you wait till the end of the talk if you want to ask questions, please? Thanks. Right. Cawsand is a village near Plymouth with a really great beach. We went there last weekend. It has fantastic rock pools with lots of crabs and things. So, how can you go to Cawsand? Well, there's a ferry from the Sutton Harbour. It only takes half an hour. There are always lots of tourists on the ferry and in the village. They go to the beach and they go swimming and sailing there. And they look at the shops, too. Er that's what Cawsand is like now. And Sam will tell you about Cawsand a long time ago. Sam? Thanks, Justin. A long time ago, there were lots of smugglers in Devon. And there were lots of smugglers in Cawsand too. Ships from France and other countries came to England with tea, pepper, brandy and other goods. These ships stopped near Cawsand and the smugglers from the village went out in their small boats. Then they put the goods onto their boats and brought them back to the village. Later they went to Plymouth to sell the goods at the market. They crossed the river to Plymouth by boat. Or sometimes they walked there with the goods in their clothes like these women in the drawing. See? Then they sold the goods in the market. So why did people smuggle goods in those days? Well, sometimes the smugglers were poor. Smuggling was the only way they could make money to buy food for their families. But sometimes smugglers were bad men. They just wanted to make lots of money. OK, that's the end of our talk. Er thanks for listening. Do you have any questions? Yeah, I have a question: Why did they smuggle things like pepper and tea? Pepper and tea are really cheap, right? How can you make lots of money with things like that? Er Sam, can you? Yes. That's a good question. Yes, pepper and tea are cheap now, but in 1800 or so, they were very expensive in shops. They came from a long way away and er, well, yes, that's why they weren't cheap in the shops. So that was a good thing for the smugglers. Thank you.

That s a great idea. OK, but which beach? There are so many different beaches near Plymouth. What about Cawsand Beach? It s a nice beach and the ferry ride is fun, too. Sorry guys, I don t have enough money for the ferry. Hmm, do you have a better idea? Well, I like Wembury Beach. Yeah, Wembury is nice. Let s go to Wembury, then. Wait! How do we get there? Well, we can take the number 48 bus from Plymstock and we can use our student tickets. That's OK for you two, but I live in Plymouth I have to take two buses! No, wait a moment, Jack. You can take the same bus,. Look, it starts in Plymouth and goes to Wembury via Plymstock. Great! So Wembury it is. Oh, I hope we see some crabs in the rock pools. Crabs! They go like this, right? Great Jack, maybe you can do your crab dance in our samba club. So, where s the beach? Come on, it s this way. There s the sea! Come on.
