2 Dear Community Partner, On Saturday June 4 th, 2011, the Carlsbad Community is coming together to host its 4 th annual Carlsbad Beach Fest, a free, fun filled event celebrating recreation paradise through good beach stewardship. The mission behind this event is to highlight our coastal playground as an irreplaceable resource and to show appreciation for its beauty and value. Exciting beach and water activities are planned for all to enjoy and participate in. Growing from 850 people in 2007 to 2600 last year, we look forward to declaring the Carlsbad Beach Fest as one of Carlsbad s most important events of the year, with the anticipation of doubling attendance. Just as important to our economy and to the overall quality of life that Carlsbad residents and visitors enjoy are its beaches, which rival many of California s other premier beaches in beauty and natural habitat. One-and-a-half miles, bordering the 6.5 miles of beaches, have been set aside as a state park for camping and general recreation. The three lagoons along Carlsbad s beaches host among the most diverse natural habitat in all of southern California. The vitality and health of these natural arenas remain crucial to the well being of the community as a whole. Our coastline is and can continue to be THE MOST valuable treasure for us if and only if it is preserved. The State Parks Department and the City of Carlsbad continue to undertake efforts to ensure the continuity of Carlsbad's beach areas. Providing the community a day to celebrate and express appreciation requires additional support from our community partners. Activities & Attractions planned include: A first time ever Low Tide Beach Run/Walk, Sand Sculpting by U.S. Open Champions Archisand, Multiple Stages with Bands & Live Entertainment, Life Guard Demonstrations, Sports Competitions and clinics will be offered in Paddle Board, Surfing, Kayaking, Beach Volleyball, Beach Soccer and Ultimate Frisbee; Beach Yoga & Zumba! Fitness, Interactive Educational Booths, Green Vendor Displays, Artists Exhibits, Kite Flying, Celebrity Appearances, Food & Beverage Vendors and an orchestrated Under Water Clean Up lead by Sea Life Aquarium and Ocean Enterprises Dive Teams, and one hundred local divers. Hundreds of volunteers from around North County San Diego will also participate in a massive Beach Clean Up. 3 HISTORY In 2007, a joint effort by California State Parks and the City of Carlsbad s Beach Preservation Committee created the 1 st annual Carlsbad Beach Festival. The event began, and remains today, as a grass roots effort promoting the biological and cultural resources of the local coastline and inland waterways. To accomplish these goals, the group enlisted the assistance of local lagoon foundations, and other organizations sharing the same interests at heart. A volunteer beach clean-up which spanned more than 3 miles of coastline, as well as local trails and beach access areas surrounding the nearby lagoon and beach community, was the primary activity of the event. With the success of the first Beach Fest, the same group of volunteer committee members successfully increased attendance and awareness in 2008 by adding live entertainment, artist demonstrations, and food vendors. In 2009, the event committee recruited more like-minded businesses, professionals, and non-profits who desired to increase awareness and stewardship by providing interactive educational booths which encouraged the community to learn while having fun. In 2010 the event grew to an estimated 2600 people. Giant sand sculptures created by U.S. Open Champions, Achisand and more live entertainment grabbed the attention and participation of hundreds more people. Carlsbad Beach Fest 2011 continues with its mission and momentum on June 4 th, 2011, offering another exciting day to celebrate the value and beauty of our coastal playground. Along with 15 sporting events and activities, this year s exciting new additions include a first-time-ever Low Tide Beach Run/Walk, Hands Across the Beach lead by Sea Life Aquarium and Ocean Enterprises Dive Teams, Green Organizations share their environmentally friendly products, and four stages showcase live entertainment. THE EVENT Hands Across the Beach and Beach Clean-Up Sea Life Aquarium and Ocean Enterprises will lead a ceremonial Hands Across the Beach to honor World Oceans Day. Linked hands will connect one mile of beach sending the message that beach and ocean conservation is in our hands. A massive Beach Clean-Up will encompass 3 miles of beach giving hundreds of people opportunity to service to their community. Recreation and Athletic Events A first time ever Low Tide Beach Run Blast!!, a Low Tide Walk and a Kids One Mile Fun Run will kick off the festivities. One mile of beach provides sports competitions, clinics, and demos in Paddle Board, Body Board, Surfing, Kayaking, Beach Volleyball, Beach Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, Kite Flying, Zumba Fitness & Yoga, free for families and individuals to enjoy. Art Seaside U.S. Open Champions, Archisand, is the event s featured artisan group returning again to sculpt and build another gigantic sand sculpture to reflect this year s theme, Recreation Paradise through Good Beach Stewardship. More artists from painters to authors will participate displaying and demonstrating their works and related mediums which complement and support the day s mission. Education Expo Interactive educational booths provide avenues to continue stewardship of our environment. More than 20 organizations provide fun, hands-on activities and information for children and adults, allowing for a better understanding of the importance of coastal and inland waterway stewardship. Lifeguard rescue demonstrations are also a highlight to the expo. Green Product Awareness Businesses which have adopted principles, policies, and practices that improve the quality of life for their customers, their employees, communities, and the environment are invited to this year s event. They will demonstrate how their products or services allow for economic development while conserving for future generations. Live Entertainment The surf will rock with four performance stages erected on the sand, providing live entertainment all day; headlined by multiple bands, dance troupes, drum circles, hula hoopers, jugglers, celebrity appearances, and more! Food Court A variety of food is provided on a cash bases to Beach Fest goers. Free bites to Event Volunteers! Opportunity Drawing & Prizes Each event volunteer is entered into a free drawing as a thank you for effort given in support of the event s mission. Prizes will also be awarded to winners of drawing, event contests, and competitions.

As a community working together, we can reach our goals by establishing long term public support and stewardship to protect, preserve and enhance our coastal waterways and beaches through education and camaraderie. Location: Income Level: Carlsbad State Beach $92,249 per household Attendance: 3,000-5,000 Target Audience: 87% - North Co. Families 9% - Enviro-Friendly User Groups 4% - Youth Group Organizations Operating under the umbrella of the Friends of Cardiff & Carlsbad State Beaches Foundation, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Please select one if reserving booth space: Interpretive/Educational Booth Booth Space Rental: Free with hands-on activity OR $225.00, (circle one). Educational booth sponsors are required to provide educational displays, instruction, and/or interactive hands-on activities which focus on environmental topics which complement the event s mission. Static displays and advertisement are encouraged; however no sales may be made on-site. Product Vendor Booth Booth Space Rental: $250 and a $50donation of non-perishable merchandise or gift certificate - Booth Sponsors, with products or services relating to outdoor recreation may advertise and provide displays of their products and/or services, however no sales may be made on-site. Artist Booth Booth Space Rental: Free with demonstration AND a tax deductible donation of artwork or merchandise valued at $100 or more. Participating artists will actively demonstrate their talents which complement the event s mission. The tax deductible donation of $100 in artwork, merchandise, or gift certificates will be used for raffle prizes or event fund raising. Displays of artwork and advertisement of business are encouraged; however no sales may be made on-site. Food Vendor Booth Booth Space Rental: Free to Vendors supplying food products and/or beverages to Event Volunteers at no charge AND a minimum donation of $50.00 in non-perishable products or gift certificates for event opportunity drawing. Vendors may also sell their products to the public during the event. All are responsible to meet the necessary food handler permits as announced by the San Diego County of Environmental Health and have permits available on site. A $250 fee is required from food vendors who wish only to sell food to the public and not provide a donation or free food to volunteers. Green Product Vendor Booth Booth Space Rental: Free with hands-on demonstration of product AND a minimum donation of $ in nonperishable merchandise or gift certificates; OR $ (circle one). Static displays and advertisement are encouraged; however no sales may be made on-site. Merchandise and gift certificates donated will be included in an opportunity drawing for volunteers, contest & sport competition winners. Vendors will be provided with a booth space on the sand or in another designated area with set-up and break-down assistance. Please provide your own, table, chairs, tent or pop-up. Event will proceed in rain or shine. A reminder letter will be sent in May with arrival procedure, booth location, parking, etc. Entertainment Stage Rental: Free with live performance provided at no charge to Carlsbad Beach Fest (CBF). Arrival, set-up, performance, and break-down times will be negotiated, planned, and scheduled. Performing groups and/or individuals will be asked to sign schedule confirmation form once times have been determined and agreed upon. Along with the many benefits listed in this package, CBF will provide required power, flat stage, and assistance.
