1 Emergency Action Plans Emergency Action Plan E.A.P. Definition A course of action that is to be undertaken by a coach when an emergency / incident occurs during a surfing session. Emergency Action Plan Remove rest of group from water using recall signal & inform them of situation. Effect rescue of patient ( Inform & seek assistance from Lifeguards/other Instructors if necessary) Remove patient to a safe area Diagnose extent of injury /and or shock Take appropriate action for first aid & call out of Emergency services if needed Inform & seek assistance from Lifeguards if necessary Remove patient to centre or hospital as appropriate No injured patient to walk up beach unattended Inform the group & update them on situation Patient to be taken to hospital with emergency services. Under 18 patients: parents / guardians to be informed as soon as possible Continue lesson, delay, or cancel as appropriate Complete Accident Report forms as necessary. Reporting Procedures Complete accident report form as necessary Discuss incident & report with Head Coach/ Manager Report and comply with R.I.D.D.O.R. regs. If patient admitted to hospital or 3 day injury. (

2 Surfing Instructor Injury E.A.P. The following EAP action must be followed if an instructor i/c of the group is injured or becomes incapacitated during the operations of a surfing lesson: ALL SURFERS IN THE GROUP TO REMOVE THEMSELVES FROM THE SEA AND GATHER AT THE WATER'S EDGE IN A SAFE SECURE POSITION - THEN CARRY OUT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS: a) If on a lifeguarded beach seek assistance from the lifeguards on duty b) If there are no lifeguards seek assistance from another instructor or appropriate person on the beach [ i.e. a responsible adult ] c) If under 18 yrs age, go with buddy' to seek help in a) or b) d) If no one on beach report to 999 emergency e) Inform Surfing centre HQ, ASAP. This EAP must be communicated to the group / students if the coach is working alone. This information should be included in the introduction / safety brief to the students. A waterproof / laminated copy of the procedure is to be kept in the First Aid kit that is taken down for the session. [This can be used for reference by the students if there is an accident / incident involving the coach]
