1 Cnr Lavarack Road & Albatross Avenue, Nobby Beach, Qld 4218 Phone: Website: nobbysbeachsurfclub.com PO Box 56, Miami 4220 Celebrating 62 Years NIPPER HANDBOOK SEASON 2015/16 South Coast Branch Nipper Club of the Year
2 WELCOME TO NOBBY S NIPPERS Welcome to the start of a new Nippers season at Nobby s. A special welcome to our returning families and to all our new members and children joining our Nippers program for the first time this year. I hope the information contained in this booklet will answer questions you may have about the 2016/2017 season. Please note dates featured in this hand book are all subject to change at anytime and parents will be notified accordingly. OBJECTIVES OF OUR PROGRAM Throughout the season our junior members will learn surf safety skills (including how to identify rips), surf sports skills, such as body surfing and negotiating the surf on a Nippers board. Activity days also include the beach disciplines of flags, beach sprints and relays. At Nobbys our primary focus is to make the Nippers experience fun and enjoyable for all participants and their families. Our objective is to promote personal development, leadership skills and improve the self-confidence of our junior members by setting realistic and obtainable goals and challenges. We encourage competition but recognise that not all our junior members are disposed to the rigors of competition. We aim to strike a balance between nurturing and encouraging the competitive urges in our junior members and at the same time providing a welcoming environment and a full program for those members who are less inclined to participate in the competitive side of surf lifesaving. 8 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/ GUARDIANS & CARERS Nobbys Beach SLSC Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy Creating safe and supportive service environments for children and young people is everyone s business. Nobbys Beach SLSC is committed to providing the highest standard of service to children and young people and ensuring they are kept safe from harm. In order to create a safe and supportive service environment for children and young people, surf life saving clubs must initiate and maintain ongoing planning and commitment. In a safe and supportive environment, services and activities are provided so children and young people: feel safe and protected from harm; help plan activities and make decisions; are consulted and respected; and have their best interests considered and upheld. In accordance with the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000, Nobbys Beach SLSC is required to have a written child and youth risk management strategy to protect the children and young people in our organisation from harm. The strategy will help ensure Nobbys Beach SLSC is a safe and supportive service environment for children and young people, by identifying and minimising risks. Screening employees and volunteers through the blue card system is part of the strategy. The child and youth risk management strategy addresses the following elements: a statement of commitment; a code of conduct for interacting with children and young people; procedures for recruiting, selecting, training and managing paid employees and volunteers; policies and procedures for handling disclosures or suspicions of harm, including reporting guidelines; a plan for managing breaches of the child and youth risk management strategy; policies and procedures for implementing and reviewing the child and youth risk management strategy and maintaining an employee register for blue cards; risk management plans for high-risk activities and special events; and strategies for communication and support. As a parent/ carer, it is important for you to understand the policies and procedures that form the child and youth risk management strategy. A copy of the strategy is available on request from Nobbys Beach SLSC for your information and comment. Page 7

Anyone who has completed their competition evaluation can compete and nippers need to obtain their age award before competing at Branch or State. Under 13 s are now required to complete an online workbook as part of their Resuscitation Certificate. This also needs to be completed by 31/12/2016. Where are carnivals held? Carnivals are mainly held on the Gold Coast although some U11-14 carnivals occasionally compete on the Sunshine Coast. How long do the carnivals go for? Most carnivals this year are held over one day with the exception of Branch Titles, GCC Titles & State Titles. Most carnivals marshal at approx 7.45am, with a club warm-up being held at 7am. Most carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day. How to enter/cost? Advise your Age Manager before the carnival closing date (normally about 10 days before the carnival). Any Nipper wanting to participate in carnivals may be required to pay nomination fees. Cost to be advised. Page 10
12 What to Bring? There are Nobbys tents that we provide for our members and we ask parents to bring their own umbrella/tent/chair and sit nearby. You will require plenty of water and food to last the day, sunscreen, nipper cap, pink rashie, club swimmers and warm clothes if the weather/wind turns. Club Craft Nobbys has a variety of fiberglass and foam boards that members can use at carnivals. This craft will be transported to the carnival via our board trailer, and the boards will be taken to the beach near the tent. You are required to bring back any craft used to the tent immediately after your race ready for the next competitor.
