2 CHAPTER 1 Wave and Tidal Energy Wave and tidal energy both use water to form energy. 1
3 CHAPTER 2 Creation of Wave/Tidal Energy Steps of wave energy: 1. Waves travel into the chamber which makes that water go up and down. 2. The water level going up and down forces air to go in and out of the chamber. 3. The air rushing in and out turns a turbine. 4. The turbine spinning creates electricity. Steps of tidal energy: 1. Tides go in and out naturally. 2. The water flows through tunnels that are built. 3. The ebb and flow (back and forth rocking) of the water turns turbines. 4. Those turbines are used to make electricity. alternate ways. 1. Push plates-harness the kinetic energy by having the water directly push the turbines. 2. Vivace- Harnesses small internal waves underwater. 2
4 CHAPTER 3 Advantages of Wave and Tidal Energy Tidal Energy: 1. Once built the water is free 2. Produces no waste or greenhouse gases 3. Needs no fuel 4. Reliable electricity 5. Not expensive to maintain 6.Tides are very easy to predict 7.Not always super expensive to build 8. Renewable Wave Energy: 1. Energy is free 2. Not expensive to operate and maintain 3. Can produce great deal of energy 4. Renewable 3 Tidal Energy Machines
5 CHAPTER 4 Disadvantages of Wave and Tidal Energy Tidal Energy: 1. Building across an estuary can be really expensive to build 2. Only provides power for around 10 hours a day 3. Only a few tides are suitable to work for the machines Wave Energy: 1. Depends of waves so it isn t very reliable 2. Needs a suitable site 3. It can be very noisy 4. Has to withstand very rough water 4

7 CHAPTER 6 Summary Overall both wave and tidal energy have pretty much the same impacts on the environment. They are both renewable, unlike fossil fuels, so they are better for the earth and can be used continuously as long as we have water to produce the power. The society should pursue this as a resource for energy because there will always be an ocean and we are just harnessing that energy. Building the machine can cost up to billions of dollars though which is a huge downside although it can also be a great investment in the long run. 6
