NIPPERS SEASON STARTS OFF ON A POSITIVE NOTE - WITH A HUGE THANKS TO MASTERMYNE We have had a fantastic start to our Nippers Season, which has boost numbers for the club, with over 300 members, new and old joining the club. The season kicked off on a positive note with the GOLD Sponsorship taken on by Mastermyne, who kindly donated $15000 towards upgrading our junior equipment. This sponsorship is a huge contribution to the club, going towards helping the club purchase up-to-date equipment for regular training of our future lifesavers. With this money the club purchased 2 nipper foamie boards, 6 nipper racing boards and 4 racing boards, as well as shirts for the Tri Series events. A huge thank you to Mastermyne for supporting the Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club. 2 Page 2 of 9 FIRST DAY OF NIPPERS The first day of nippers was a huge success with a great turn out for renewals of memberships and new members. This year we had 162 new nippers and their families join the club. This is a great turn out, which shows that we are moving forward positively. This year we have seen a lot of positive changes happen within the club, with new and highly dedicated committee, taking on new positions, keeps the club moving forward in a positive direction. We have a great crew of dedicated old boys who without a doubt, are always there to get the job done. And all the volunteers and devoted parents, we know we can always rely on you to take on a task, whether it is to help out in the canteen or uniform shop, there is always someone there to assist where needed. Thank you all. This year we are certainly reaping the benefits of her hard efforts. We have only positives to celebrate this year, and guaranteed next year can only be bigger and better. With the club debt now finally paid off, the management committee is looking at a strategic plan to upgrade the facilities and work on a maintenance plan. Many projects have been put on the back burner as our first strategy was to clear our debt. We have started with upgrading the electricity in the canteen and fixing the cold room as well as the painting of the club house. There is a lot of work that is needed for upstairs. Some of the air conditioners have been given the go ahead to be replaced. With the end of the year finishing so positively, 2012 can only continue on the same path.
3 Page 3 of 9 NORTH BARRIER BRANCH YOUTH EXPERIENCE On September the 23rd to the 26th Hannah Ridland, Erin Brotherson, Maegan Cass, Grace Ramsay and myself had the opportunity to attend the North Barrier Branch Youth Experience. We travelled to Rainbow bay SLSC along with 25 other participants. This was the first Branch Camp in 7 years. While we were there we had the opportunity to meet other members from the Surf Lifesaving network. We had the opportunity to go to Surfcom; this is a place where people can observe all of the beaches along the Gold coast via cameras. They also have radios to talk to all the surf clubs. Halfway through our tour of Surfcom, we got a visit from one of the Westpac helicopters. After Surfcom, we left to go to the Hanger, where they keep the Westpac helicopters. While we were there, we met Zane Holmes, who was the special guest speaker. Everyone was really excited. We asked Zane different questions about his career in lifesaving and about all of his training. He later asked if we knew anything about him. Someone said that they knew he had a pet dog which was a Labrador (we had a who am I about him on the bus on the way there). Hannah, in a disappointed voice said I know that you have a wife and child. After the talk with Zane Holmes, we went outside where we watched one of the helicopters start up and fly away. It was really loud and windy. We went back to Rainbow Bay after that and did a patrol there. Bianca and Maegan were lucky enough to be taken out in the IRB and left in the water, only to be picked up by the Westpac helicopter while out there! The crew was testing out a new technique to pick up swimmers. It was successful and Maegan and Bianca enjoyed it a lot. That was only one of our days down on the gold Coast. We spent a lot of time at the Rainbow Bay SLSC which was tons of fun, with team activities and photo scavenger hunts. We even jumped off Snapper Rocks several times - It was scary at first but really fun. The water was very cold though. On the last morning, we had just jumped off Snapper Rocks when we saw a bunch of dolphins swimming not too far away from us. Several of us swam out there, and three others were on boards. We sat there hanging onto the boards, and the dolphins were coming up really close to us. If you had ducked your head under water, you would have heard the noises they make. They were swimming about one metre away from us at one stage. It was so cool to be swimming with dolphins. While we were down there, Erin, Maegan, Jordan and I also had the opportunity to compete at the Junior Coolangatta Gold. For me, this was a great experience as I have never competed in an event like that in our branch or at states. This really tested our fitness and I now know how hard I need to train to be up with the other competitors from down south. After the race, everyone went to Wet n Wild! It was so much fun. This was a great branch experience that was enjoyed by all. This was something I would definitely like to attend every year and would recommend to other members to be a part of. Kaylarni Close
4 Page 4 of 9 Mackay s Latest Junior Lifesavers Our future is looking good with our juniors completing their SRC and becoming our Junior Lifesavers. These kids have started their patrols for the season and are proving to be a great asset to the club. Thank you Back: Sioban Condren, Tayla Baillie, Kaylarni Close, Isobell Crothers-Stomp, Ben Brotherson, Alex Brown, Ashleigh, Claudia West. Junior Club Captains A big congratulation goes to Kaylarni Close and Ben Brotherson for receiving Junior Club Captains for 2011/12 season. This is a great achievement and a big task so thank you Kaylarni and Ben for accepting this position. Clean up Australia Day FROM YOUR JNR CLUB CAPTAIN My Name is Ben Brotherson, I have been a member of Mackay Surf Life Saving Club for 3 years, and this year I am one of your Junior Captains. I enjoy being a part of nippers because I like spending time down at the beach and out in the ocean. I also like competing at carnivals which means a commitment to training and a big thank you to our coaches and trainers who volunteer their time. As a member of Mackay Surf Life Saving Club I think it is important to help support the club in other areas including fund raising, so I hope everyone will join me in supporting our upcoming annual door knock appeal this weekend. See you at the beach. Junior Surf Lifesavers Jess Hartman, Claudia West, Isabella Baxter and Allyse Cochrane help clean up Australia Day.

Liz and Mark has been a HUGE asset to the Club helping out in every possible way that they can. Grace and Ben Ramsay have been very successful in Surf Lifesaving and have done our club proud. You all will be greatly missed. From behalf of the Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club, we wish you all the best for your new adventures. We envy the next surf club that you join; perhaps we won t access their transfers.
7 Page 7 of 9 Captains Knock North Aussies have been & gone & congratulations to organisers, workforce, helpers across all our activity centres (clothing, food preparation & distribution, Bar,) the team managers & organisers, Competitors & juniors who helped with the collection of results and all others that played a part in another successful weekend. Thanks also to Col & Sue Coles for their generosity with the provision of the front balcony bar on the last day of competition. The Club Spirit generated here cannot be bought & the talk of further event activities of this nature should be pursued. This same Club Spirit now needs to be challenged & tested over the immediate week & coming months. Firstly, the Surf Lifesaving Annual Doorknock is conducted from 21 Nov ( yes it has started) through to Sunday 4 th ember. Historically the Club did pretty well out of this & all funds raised remain with the Club. All senior Club members & junior Club families should be able to spare some time in this period to doorknock a few streets, canvas businesses or use your own contacts to source donations for this worthwhile cause. If you haven t already done so then please contact the coordinator, Steve Bruun on or via at bruuny64@gmail.com to obtain your area / collection pack and start collecting. To put it in perspective, if 100 members / families collected or raised $100 then the club would get $10, Pretty easy work when shared around. Secondly, Xmas time is usually one of joy and time with family & friends (I fully support that who wouldn t). We still however have a commitment to patrol the beaches over this period & I appreciate that families go away for annual holidays. The Patrol roster is fairly tight over this period, with all patrols having at least 1 patrol over the Xmas / Boxing Day period & then back up again over the New Year s holiday. ADDITIONALLY we are running Xmas day as a volunteer patrol. I am asking all active members to please talk to your Patrol Captains and make that effort to commit to your rostered patrols. If you cannot make it then please look to commit to another Patrol over that period that you can make it. Patrol Captains; please also start to contact your patrolling members, to check out how your patrol may be affected. Please look to make this roster a little bit fun (I m open to suggestions how this may be achieved, but maybe a BBQ, before or after, or a drink, nibbles & wind down after???????) Thirdly, it is timely again to put out a reminder about Club Security, with a few recent incidences highlighting this. Would all members using the club facilities be aware of the need to ensure that the Club remains either locked (after hours) or at least closed up when no one else is around? This includes both Seniors & Juniors who are attending training sessions mid week (& this is in both organised & individual sessions). Coaches & managers this needs to be apart of your responsibilities or delegate accordingly. Patrol Captains as a part of finishing up on both Saturday & Sunday afternoons, please ensure that doors, roller doors & windows throughout the club and closed & locked. There will be a lot more public activity around over the coming weeks, with school holidays, so we need to minimize any risk for loss or damage of equipment (BOTH CLUB & PERSONAL) And Finally, we have 13 new SRC members & 15 New Bronze Squad Members who have been assigned to and have / are commencing Beach Patrols Please all make them feel welcome.. Happy to discuss any of these things & can be contacted on Mobile Cheers Tony Caris 2011 / 2012 Club Captain
8 Page 8 of 9 Australian Surf Lifesaving Conference -Stan Ridland & Chris Webb On October 7 th, Christine Webb and Stan Ridland represented the Mackay club at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Conference at Sydney s Darling Harbour. The conference kicked off Friday night with an opening ceremony and continued all day Saturday with the awards of excellence dinner that night, and then we had to back up Sunday morning til 2 o clock. It was a great experience and not only did we learn things for the club, meet interesting members from other clubs, it also develops you as a person. They had some very good speakers as well as great topics. One thing both Chris and I believe, is that the club should send members each time to both the State and Australian conferences, which will help give members an understanding of how our organisations works and that the problems we have are not isolated to just our club alone. The conference is also a great opportunity to meet other life savers throughout Australia. We may even be able to set up an exchange program like Hannah mentioned a few years back when she attended a conference. How would you like to spend a weekend as a life guard at Bondi? The National strategic plan stated the need for us to view a 24/7 operation, now this is not seen as total patrolling of the beach, but by being ready to respond at any time. A lot of rescues around the country have been performed by off duty club members who may have been at the beach training or even socialising, and have been call into action. This has happened in the past here in Mackay during the off season with a sail boarder, without our members attention the person would have drowned. Also it was highlighted the use of our IRB rescue boats and helicopter in the Brisbane floods working alongside the police and Emergency services. So as Club we may need to look into this and how we may put ourselves on call to help out at minimal notice. On a number of occasions in the early 90 s I have taken time off work to do search and rescue work along the coast after boating accidents. One of the big issues was that as Lifesaving clubs we need to strive hard to stay connected with the community and educate the public about what we do. We cannot take for granted that the community knows all about our work & why they should support us. All in all, I recommend any member to jump at the opportunity to attend a lifesaving conference.
