Red Rocks Pari-whero Wild coastal environment Shared path with WD vehicles Red Rocks/Pari-Whero Owhiro Bay Parade Owhiro Bay Quarry Quarry Taputeranga Marine Reserve 2 PART Potential future links Makara and south Karori Red Rocks/ Pari-whero Red Rocks/ Pari-Whero to Owhiro Bay Information Centre The Owhiro Bay visitor information and car park provide the gateway to the route that passes through the rock quarry, to Red Rocks (Pari-Whero). The -wheel drive former road continues past Red Rocks (and is a potential link to regional coastal pathway). Link to Te Kopahu Reserve, and future link to South Karori and/or Makara. The coast consists of gravel beaches and rocky headlands and has a dominant wild coast character. The west boundary of the Taputeranga Marine Reserve lies within this sector. Information centre and gateway to wild coast Off-road section of track. Shared use of gravel wheel drive road open to vehicles every day but Sunday. Road can get busy on weekends, but traffic speed slow. High level of actual and perceived safety. Track surface uneven and soft in places. Most suitable for mountain bikes and pedestrians. Effectively no exit as travellers typically need to return the way they came. Gravel path separated from carpark spaces No development needed to the path apart from GHW branding, localised interpretation and occasional maintenace. 0 20
2 Owhiro Bay West Residential development at base of coastal escarpment. Important link to visitor centre and wild coast area. Narrow strip of flat land between the road and shore used for informal car and boat parking. Generally there is space between the road and short sections of sea wall at some locations particularly the northern end. Rocky shore. Scattered small trees and shrubs. Road m wide. Generally low traffic volumes, with busy periods during weekends. The narrow road has no hard shoulder, with a narrow footpath both sides of road. Informal resident s car and boat parking where space permits on the coastal edge. Widen the footpath on the seaward side where space permits. No road space available to use. Reduce traffic speed. May need to extend sea wall in places where pinch points occur. Ensure parking does not encroach onto path. 0 Owhiro Bay Beach Links to City via Happy Valley Road 3 Owhiro Bay East Owhiro Bay Generally tranquil with the coastal and residential character dominant. Owhiro Bay Owhiro Bay West 2 Owhiro Bay Parade Taputeranga Marine Reserve The Sirens Rocks Space to widen path. Limited space to widen path. 3 Owhiro Bay Beach A small car park located at the beach, where Happy Valley Road meets the coast. Owhiro Bay East The route could pass through the car park area or follow the road. Develop as stopping point and delineate route in relation to car park area Residential development at base of coastal escarpment. Traffic very apparent and detracts from relaxed nature of the coastal environment with a low perceived saftey. Busy road with both residential and through traffic including trucks and buses. Narrow footpath both sides of road. Path could follow outer edge of car park. Seaward footpath on top of sea wall with wooden handrail. Road 7.0m wide, no hard shoulder on seaward side. Car parking on landward shoulder. Little or no hard shoulder and narrow footpaths. Widen seaward footpath with a cantilevered deck or other environmentally appropriate method. 3 0 PART 2
The Sirens Rocks The Sirens Rocks The Esplanade 6 Space to widen path. Taputeranga Marine Reserve The Sirens Rocks Path could follow outer edge of car park. Informal car parking on coastal edge.. PART Sirens Rocks Residential and commercial businesses at base of escarpment (dive shop, café, marine research centre). Narrow strip of flat land between the road and shore used for informal car and boat parking. Scattered small trees and shrubs along coastal strip. Rocky shore. High traffic activity along the road and in and around the large car park area. Footpath on both sides of the road. Informal resident s car and boat parking on coastal edge adjacent to the road. Widen the seaward path utilising space on the seaward side. Formalise parking to ensure parked vehicles do not encroach onto path. Widen path along car park edge, using car park space, to reduce conflict of multiple users
6 Island Bay west 7 Island Bay Promenade The Esplanade Path width restricted by sea wall. Island Bay Island Bay Taputeranga Marine Reserve Space to widen path. 8 6 Island Bay West Taputeranga Island Residential development. Busy local road with trucks and cars. Beach access points to the dune area. Sandy beach. Narrow footpath both sides of the road. Limited space on the seaward side beyond footpath with sea walls and Island Bay Dune Restoration project area. Varying width of footpath with kerb-side car parking adjacent to dune restoration area. Little or no hard shoulder. Potential to widen path in dune restoration area will require detailed investigation. Dune protection area at west end of Island Bay Esplanade. Widen narrow section of path at western end. Car park bays encroach into footpath near eastern (Island Bay) end. PART 7 Island Bay Promenade Wide promenade separated from the sandy beach by solid low wall. Beach access and ancillary facilities such as park benches, rubbish bins, toilets and change facilities. 3.m wide footpath Angle parking Widen path particularly at western end. Relocate rubbish bins. 2 Island Bay Promenade. 23
Houghton Bay Island Bay west - Houghton Bay The Esplanade Houghton Bay Taputeranga Marine Reserve PART 8 Island Bay west and Houghton Bay Residential area and rocky shore. Sea walls retain the shore in places (some parts recently upgraded). Sandy beach and small car park at Houghton Bay. Busy local road. Narrow footpath. Narrow strips of flat land on seaward side of the path used for informal parking with scattered coastal trees and shrubs. No hard shoulder space on the seaward side of the road. Opportunity to widen the path by realigning the sea wall sections as appropriate. Good example of car park with delineation between vehicles and pedestrians. However, the path is too narrow. 0 Example of how paths can be separated from car parks and vehicles. Width restricted by sea wall. 9 Houghton Bay East Winding section of road along steep rock and vegetated bluffs, and narrow road platform Narrow path with sections of.0m wide boardwalk cantilevered off side of road. No continuous hard shoulder space. Widen timber cantilevered paths. No road space to utilise 0 The wooden platform provides space for a path where there is no shoulder. Informal parking on coastal edge. 2
0 Te Raekaihau Relatively undeveloped headland, has been reclaimed in the past but retains a natural appearance shoreline. Revegetation project planned ( Plimmer Trust funding) Off road car parking areas Waitaha Cove Te Raekaihau Te Raekaihau 0 Much of path upgraded and separated from road, including boardwalk sections. Path/boardwalk too narrow for 2 way/ multi use. Relatively wide coastal platform providing space between footpath and coastal edge. Waitaha Cove Waita Cove Space available to widen footpath or construct second path. Residential development in bay Semi-natural coastal edge Path not wide enough for shared use. Queens Drive No hard shoulder space either side of road Footpath on seaward side of road. Sea wall supporting sand and vegetation Modification of the sea wall would be required to widen the path. Space for wider or shared path. 2 Maranui Investigate opportunities to widen path and realign sea wall as appropriate Maranui Arthurs Nose Relatively wide coastal platform, with mown grass and mature pohutukawa. Off road car park area. Trolley bus poles on seaward edge of path from Hungerford Road north One of two sections of entire route with houses between the road and the sea. Potential site of the Marine Education Centre adjacent to Arthurs Nose, currently being considered. Space on seaward side to widen footpath Wide road shoulder with parked cars in residential area The Esplanade Space available to widen path, or construct separate path May require relocation of trolley bus poles, street lights and earthworks (fill). 8 Te Raekaihau PART Waitaha Cove Maranui 2
Lyall Bay Promenade 3 Lyall Bay Promenade Lyall Parade Lyall Bay Bike racks at the Art Gallery. Building intruding onto path creates bottleneck. Cafes require bike rack facilities. Space for off-road path at either end of car park. PART 3 Lyall Bay Promenade Sandy beach, heritage sea wall and sand dunes. Park benches, 2x public toilets, café, bike stands. Off road car park at eastern end. 3.0m wide foot path. Room for slow cyclists on footpath. Wide road, relatively busy with a mix of angle and parallel parking. Blue toilet block creates bottleneck on footpath Wind blown sand build upon path. More bike stands Widen path where possible using road/ parking space Good placement of structures (rubbish bins, seating) off path to avoid bottle necks.
